The SURFs started their league fixtures on a rainy day at home to neighbours Gorseinon yesterday in this Smiths Homes fixture.

The conditions didn't help the flow of the game in the opening half with both sides making handling errors & giving away penalties at the breakdown. Unfortunately, many going in favour of the visitors. However it was the men in green & white who scored first with a try after some thirty minutes from centre Sion Edmunds.

The visitors were quick to reply with a penalty taking the score to 5-3. The half time whistle sounded after another successful penalty kick by the visitors following an infringement at the ruck. Half time score 5-6.

The crowd didn't have to wait long for the first points of the second half which came from a handling error by the visitors in their 22. With the referee playing the advantage, the home side applied the pressure ending with number 8 Ryan Roberts going over for a try.

Scrum half Evan Ware was next to cross after the ref played advantage for an illegal tackle. The ball went through the hands of the backline eventually out the scrum half who sped down the left touchline & over for his first senior try. 15-6. Wing Rhodri Irving was next to claim a try with cracking run down the right wing which saw him cross and like any good old head touch down between the posts. The conversion was successful by outside half Tom Edmunds. 22-6. Those were the final points of the game, four tries & a bonus point win apart from the weather a perfect start for the boys.

Lots of positives going forward no more than the performance of last year’s Youth players Sam Grounds, Evan Ware & Shinji Harris who looked very comfortable at senior level. Indeed Evan & Shinji were playing in their first senior match which also saw Evan Ware put in a performance that saw him awarded the Cheers Man of the Match. The SURFs welcome Gorseinon 2nd XV to Fairwood Lane this weekend in this Smiths Home Fixture. It's a bit of a déjà vu with the 1st XV's of both clubs meeting last weekend. That was a bruising affair and this Saturday will no doubt be another keenly fought battle.

The team selection is a mixture of youth & maturity please come along and show your support to the boys who would much appreciate a big Uplands crowd.

On Sunday it's the turn of the Juniors who have the following matches:

U7s - Home v Penlan 9.00am Kick Off.
U8s - Away v Glynneath 9.00am Kick Off.
U10s - District Festival at South Gower.
U11s - Away v Brackla 10.30am Kick Off.
U16s - Away v Porthcawl 12.45am Kick Off.

The 1st XV welcomed Gorseinon to Fairwood Lane on Saturday where they ground out a hard fought victory in this Smiths Homes Match.

The 1st half was a real dog fight with both sides vying for territorial possession and dominance in the set piece. Indeed the only points of the half came from an early Peter Anson penalty giving the boys a 3-0 advantage going into the break.

On the restart the Uplands were quickly out of the blocks. Their efforts were rewarded after some fine running rugby with a try from outside centre Rhodri Wall successfully converted by Pete Anson.

There was an immense period of pressure from the visitors but the boys defence held firm when it looked inevitable that a try would come for the men in red & white. However, the next points of the game came the way of the home side from an impressive darting run from replacement flanker Harri Jones. He passed the ball over the heads of the covering defence for wing Callum Dodd to cross the whitewash. Again the conversion was successful from Mr Reliable Pete Anson.

A fine all round display with the backline looking sharp and the forwards winning the up front battle at the set piece. There will definitely be a few battered bodies this week on both sides. Kev will be busy for us.

The Cheers Man of the match went to Callum Dodd pictured being presented with his bottle of fizz from Forwards Coach Dylan Richards.

Next week the 1st XV have a free week whilst the SURFS are at home to Gorseinon where they face their 2nds in their first league fixture. The boys would certainly appreciate your support.

Weekends events as the senior season kicks off tomorrow with a belter.

Tonight is Junior Registration is on from 6.00pm. (Mum's & Dad's come along & whilst the little ones catch up with all their team mates take advantage of the kiosk being open with a cheeky Rijo coffee or something stronger).

Tomorrow, the 1st XV kick off the 2026/2027 season with a local derby against Gorseinon. The Smiths Homes fixture promises to be a cracker with both sides keen to display some free flowing rugby. Come along & be the sixteenth man for the boys who have worked hard all summer, kick off is at 2.30pm.

The club is open from 1.00pm where you will be able to purchase membership for this exciting season. The team selection is as above.

Great fun was had at the last Vibe Tribe last month 🪘😝 so many laughs and great to see new ladies join for the first time too 🤩

It looks like the Senior Squad will finally get a game under their belts when they visit neighbours Dunvant in a friendly fixture tomorrow evening (Thursday).

Apologies for the late notice but unfortunately the friendly against Loughor today has been cancelled. Next Saturday however the boys welcome Gowerton to Fairwood Lane, see you then.

We were due to hold MWGs Day on Saturday the 15th of August however a number of ladies are unavailable therefore the date has been changed to Saturday the 26th of September. The 1st XV welcome Tenby to Fairwood Lane in the league. We have tried to tie in with both senior squads at home but the first date for this would be in the new year.

The lunch is a thank you for supporting the Senior Squad players and coaches who give commitment three times a week with training and games.
