🔵 Match Report 🔵

Birchgrove 12 Mumbles RFC 34

And so it all came down to this. A late spring play off against the Robins on a summer baked surface in Birchgrove. Unified, the club came together. Messages of support from the junior sections on tour and a throng of Mexican travellers, a full bus and much more; hope and determination.

Travelling east, Mumbles have waited an age for this season defining game. Major positives in the form of cleared injuries, rested bodies ready to perform, and a fresh focus from the coaches; Head coach Dicky T roused his players one last time and everything about the day felt unforgiving, the boys delivered.

Pre-game focus turned to intensity form the first whistle. Immediately putting Birchgrove under pressure from the kick-off, captain Ethan soared high, the boys threw a jimmy and found the left edge with full back and kicker Fraser, excellent throughout, setting the tone. 40m up field Clarkey took care of the wide ruck and quick recycling combined with sharp handling seeing Wedlake and James Boskey punch early carries for territory.
The opening exchanges were played at a frantic pace. Fraser looked dangerous on the kick return, while young tight head Chef’s break threatened to expose the defence. Birchgrove weren’t going to lie down though. Competitive at the breakdown, a series of isolated turnovers briefly relieved Birchgrove, who attempted to play off all possession, only to be calmly stewarded to the touchline by the excellent Mumbles’ defensive line. A sign of things to come, patterns formed and repeated throughout.
Mumbles’ lineout functioned well, with Benny finding Bucks or Ethan at the back, a constant launch pad for attacks. After a period of sustained attack, the highlight of which was Benny chasing and collecting the bouncing ball to the roar of the away supporters, the initial breakthrough came. From a ruck to the left, Luke Morgan, a standout performer throughout, ran a late line out the back, finding a hole to step and expose the full back, leaving him a rooted spectator as he touched down under the sticks for the games opening try, converted for 0 -7.
Birchgrove responded quickly. After a kick out on the full gifted them field position, they built pressure from a central scrum and capitalised on the penalty with a well-executed move out wide, levelling the score at 7–7. The game remained intense and physical, with penalties mounting on both sides.
Mumbles regained control through strong carries and quick thinking. Ethan’s off-the-top ball allowed the excellent James Boskey to break the line and score under the posts, restoring the lead. Soon after, a powerful forward effort saw second row Wedlake, running a line for the ages, crash through multiple defenders to extend the advantage, making it 19–7. Despite Mumbles’ control, Birchgrove continued to threaten, earning field position and testing the defence with numbers in midfield.
A yellow card for Ethan added pressure, but a huge collective defensive effort, with highlight reels from Jack Smith at 10 and Will Howells, on his shoulder throughout, keeping the line intact. In truth no tackle or jackal was missed, and the attacking ambition was constant. Luke finding the ball, drawing defenders and Chef, Wormy and Benny resembling a second backrow around the field – the supporters growing eager with the boys a step ahead throughout the game.
The second half began with both sides playing expansively, though errors crept in. Mumbles gradually asserted dominance through disciplined defence and strong carrying from both Boskey brothers, Buckley, Wormy, again, and Jack Smith finding the half gaps or using his centres to great effect. A key moment came when sharp interplay between Jac Cross, Boskey, Benny, and Luke Morgan created space for Jack Smith to offload, allowing young Boskey to score on debut. A lovely moment for the local brothers, capping a family affair with parents running out of camera film on the side.
From there, Mumbles began to pull away. A well-structured attack from scrum play saw Luke Morgan break before slick offloading put Matt Boskey over for his second try. Fraser converted to stretch the lead to 31–7.
The remainder of the match saw Mumbles in control. Defensive organisation was outstanding, with Will Howells, Kirky, and JCW, miraculously returning despite serious injury against Morriston last time out, leading the line, while turnovers from Bucks, Ethan and more created further attacking opportunities. Although a few chances went unfinished due to handling errors, the attacking intent remained clear. The bench emptied and youth added value with Ellis’ work rate complemented perfectly by Will Evs and Andy Millard, strumming the attacking guitar - blending the attacking balance to stress the Robins across the pitch. Scrum half Jac Cross putting boot to ball, settling the games frantic nature, whenever needed.
In the closing stages, Mumbles maintained their intensity, managing the game effectively. Will Evans slotted a 3-point penalty and despite a late consolation from Birchgrove, the Mariachi band of brothers celebrated at the full-time whistle. With a tear in his eye Dicky T signed off and celebrated a club poised to grow, the nearly 50 players from youth and senior section, huddled in celebration on the pitch a testament to everyone’s hard work, despite a difficult season. Onwards and upwards.

🔵 Weekend Round Up 🔵
U8s
The under 8’s travelled to Cae park duke to face Loughor and Vardre in a round robin.
The sun was shining, so the teams really showed up for running rugby in the sun!
There was some great passing and running lines on show, with the ball going through every set of hands for two tries!! 🏉💪
Special mention fo the hulk of the week Tobi and two little tagging banshee’s in Wilf and Theo!
On to the Crackers this week 🏉🥳

U9s
Dunvant were today’s visitors on a beautiful warm Spring morning at fortress Underhill. With the AWP out of action it was back to the ‘old school’ - boggy top pitch! However after some recent, decent weather the pitch was ‘good to soft’.

Both teams had big numbers so 2 x 20 min games were played. Dunvant, keen to impress after they were beaten by the 9s at home in our friendly evening fixture last month, started strongly scoring some great tries through their big runners. Mumbles, not to be out done, started to put in the tackles and spread the ball out wide causing problems for Dunvant. Some great individual tries and a few team tries from both saw a very even contest played.

With such good weather, the coaches decided on a 10 a side rolling subs game to finish. Again Dunvant used their spearhead of 3 big runners to get through the Mumbles defence and it was working for a while. Mumbles hit back with some big tackles and using the width and gaps to score some excellent tries of their own.
Full time and lots of smiles and handshakes to finish. An excellent morning of rugby all round.

U10s
Mumbles U10’s descended to Clarrach Bay for tour this year and what an unforgettable weekend it was.

Brotherhoods built, camaraderie secured and too much beer drunk by the adults.

After two long days and late nights it was onto the St Clears festival today where with a strong touring squad of 29 Mumbles entered two sides.

It was a brilliant afternoon with Mumbles winning 8 games and drawing 1 game out of a total of 9 matches. A superb effort from 1-29 coming away undefeated playing against some extremely stern opposition in St Clears, Carmarthen Quins, Penallta, Llantrisant, Pontyclun and Cowbridge.

All in all an unforgettable weekend for all involved.

The boys and parents now are all extremely excited for next Saturday’s inaugural Junior Cracker 7’s.

U11s
Mumbles U11s welcomed touring side Ruthin RFC from North Wales on Saturday afternoon in good weather, with a strong crowd in attendance. Several of the boys had already represented Swansea Schools and Llwchwr Schools earlier that morning, making for a demanding day.
It was a tough contest against a big, physical Ruthin team, but Mumbles matched them well in the contact area and showed real heart and commitment throughout. The boys stuck at it admirably, but as fatigue set in late on, the visitors’ strength told and they pulled clear to secure a comfortable win. A spirited performance and plenty of positives to take forward.

U12s
Mumbles u12s hosted a touring Ruthin team and the weather was fine, setting up a great afternoon of Rugby. Mumbles faced Ruthin away last year on tour and came away with a narrow 3 tries to 1 win, so it was always going to be a close one!

Mumbles got off to a strong start with Joe getting over for the first try of the game. Ruthin struck back but soon after Freddie picked off a speedy intercept try making it 14-12 to Mumbles at the break.

Mumbles emptied the bench at half time with two players making their debut and they did not disappoint. Mateen flew out of the blocks scoring two tries but Ruthin struck back with two of their own.

Fortunately for Mumbles Jackson had his kicking boots on and added all of the extras with the final score Mumbles 28 - Ruthin 26. Well played both teams 👏👏👏👏

U14s
As we depart the season we take away all the memories gathered during our stay, reflecting on friendships we have made, and ones we lost ... Abercraves one eyed monster "Daiclops" the orange tinged Taibach massive. Birchgroves pack impersonating Cool runnings, sliding down the top pitch and of course playing underwater against Carmarthen (Sorry mr Groundsman)
We finished the season putting 46 points past Dunvant taking our season total to over 900 points scored, & make the cup final for the first time. But as Margaret Thrush oft said in her inspiring pre match team talks "Think becoming not being" wise words indeed Marge..Top try scorer wing Theo Dilulio top points scorer with his faithful left foot Kai Clement. next season with no Matrix ( many thanks Swansea & District) we travel across Wales playing only the best teams testing our boys, whilst always endeavouring to keep The Mumbles " dwylo dwylo " style alive...
