We speak to Janet Murray about her plans to bring a festive twist to the beloved parkruns in north Kent with the creation of The Singing Striders – a pop-up choir for people who love to sing (just not while running)! As a regular parkrunner myself, I’ve been running and volunteering for around a...

Only three more sleeps, till the Harvel 5 2023!!!

Just to keep us out of the pub, we figured we would run our "handy hints' and FAQ's (which you may find useful). Plus it gives us an opportunity to show you one of our FAB trophies. This one is designed by the lovely Ted and will go to the lucky Fastest Male Vet (40-49). No trophy cabinet is complete, for the discerning athlete, unless it features a baby triceratops!

Perhaps give us a LIKE if you want to see more trophies, in advance.

In the last 20 odd years, we’ve had some pretty whacky questions raised with us, prior to race day. Whilst the below isn’t an exhaustive list, here are a few of the more sensible ones.

“Can I wear headphones?”
-Sorry. No. This year we’ve been reminded that UK Athletics rules dictate that these are NOT ALLOWED. You will have to listen to The Final Countdown (by Europe) before you race, not during it

“Even if they are ‘bone-conductor headphones’ that don’t actually go in your ears?”
Ah...those are allowed. Albeit they are clearly powered by some form of black magic

“Is there a safe place for my baggage?”
Again, apologies but no. We are really pretty short on manpower this year, despite a great showing from club members/ friends neighbours and even people we don't really like. The fact is however, ALL of our manpower is out on the course or local roads, looking after the runners on the course, or those arriving late and rushing into the car park in a blind panic (don't let that be you, this year)!

We suggest you lock valuables in your car, or leave with a trustworthy spectator, of which there are usually a LOT on the village green.

“What time does registration open?”
Chip & race number collection will be open for punters from about 12.15ish. As ever, positioned squarely on Harvel village green.

Race start is 2pm, so you will have plenty of time ****as long as you plan ahead****. Remember the village/ parking can get congested and sometimes the routes around and into Harvel suffer traffic issues.

Plse allow yourself plenty of time to arrive, soak up the pre-race ambiance, and get yourself prepared, with that one last listen of "The Final Countdown".

Please also car-share as much as possible. We've a really big field of runners this year and not a massive field to pop the cars into. More importantly, if you car share, you can join us on the green, for a refreshing beer, post race.

Look for the numerous parking marshals, on the approaches to Harvel and heed their advice.

"I hear there is coach parking?"
Yes, you heard correct. Address is at the Vigo Rugby Club (post code is DA13 0UA) and will be open from 12.15ish

“Can I run with my dog/ baby buggy/ happy shopper trolley?”
Sorry, but NO in all cases.

The course is quite narrow in places and is one of the main reasons we limit the race entries to about 900 runners.
When you consider that the average finish time is around 40minutes, that’s a lot of runners, on the same part of the course, at any one time.

Chuck in a pack of hungry chihuahuas at full pelt, plus a double buggy with Tarquin & Angelique on board and there’s gonna be some form of runner/ pet/ baby tangle.

“Is there water available on the course?”
Yes, one water station (roughly halfway) with a variety of refreshments for the weary hasher’.

We recommend you check out our website one last time. This now has both a complete list of all race entrants (ordered alphabetically by surname) plus the very detailed Race Info

http://harvelhashhouseharriers.com/harvel-5/

Lastly, we sugest you share these posts with friends/ running colleagues attending our race. Often, last minute hiccups occur and Social Media is a good way to broadcast late breaking race info

All of HHHH look forward to welcoming you to the 24th H5, on Saturday. Till then
