Last week in the Teen & Adult class, Charles and his son smashed this 7‑count Thai boxing combination together, finishing with their own chosen techniques — all strikes safely controlled — and Charles wrapped it up with a lovely takedown 👊💥

Happy Bank Holiday Monday, Swanage!

🌊 Coastal Training + Belt Success! 🌊
Last week’s session by the sea was fantastic — everyone worked hard on balancing, kicking and throwing on the sand and in the water. Training outdoors forces you to adapt your techniques for real‑life environments: the uneven ground means kicks need to be lower and more controlled, footwork has to adjust to shifting sand, and balance becomes a skill you actively train rather than assume.

The students handled it brilliantly, and the photos show just how well everyone rose to the challenge.

A huge congratulations to Ed, who earned his Red Belt 👏
He’s trained consistently and fully deserved his promotion.

For anyone new to the page — welcome 👊🥋

Alongside our family martial arts classes, I also teach practical, real‑world self‑protection for adults, teens and children. I’ve been training for over 34 years and have learned under some of the most respected self‑defence instructors in the UK and internationally. I’m DBS checked, First Aid trained, and specialise in simple, instinctive skills that work under stress and are taught in a calm, supportive way.

Some people train for fitness, some for fun, and some for a bit of extra confidence — either to help prevent issues or to rebuild confidence after difficult experiences. Every session is tailored to the person in front of me.

🌊 Beach & Sea Training Tomorrow! 🌊
We’re taking our all‑ages class down to the beach for a fun session in and around the sea. It’s shallow, safe, controlled — and going to be one of the most fun, memorable sessions of the year.

Please bring suitable footwear for going into the water (there have been recent reports of Weever fish), plus the usual weather‑appropriate bits and a bottle of water. Parents are welcome to bring a chair or towel, and a towel is handy for drying off afterwards.

Training in natural environments builds confidence, balance, resilience and real‑world awareness. It’s brilliant for all ages and abilities.

Brilliant first outdoor session by the sea on Tuesday — all ages and abilities training together and having loads of fun. We worked on balance, coordination, and some really sharp kicking practice from everyone finishing with some weaponry training (Kali) for the teens and adults. The fresh air and the waves made it even better. Amazing effort from all ages.

A bit of inspiration for our students — I originally found this video to help one of our students who’s nursing a broken finger (not from training), and it’s too good not to share.

I’ve had the honour of training under various karate masters over the last 34 years, like Kanazawa‑sensei and others who are sadly no longer with us. Their teachings have shaped a lot of what we do at Swanage Martial Arts, and I’m proud to pass their knowledge on in our classes.

Kanazawa’s story is a brilliant reminder that perseverance and mindset are at the heart of martial arts.
