Let's celebrate US Independence Day with probably the most famous car to ever race at Swaffham, the KLF Yank. A long time ago, before the internet existed and banger drivers just turned up at their local track with an old car to race 284 Paul Bickers did that with a Ford Galaxie on the 30th June 1991. Their was no hype surrounding it and apart from a few mentions over the PA from the commentator Corky (R.I.P.) the car had very little fanfare. It had belonged to the notorious music group the KLF and appeared in videos and on record covers for them and the Timelords. Bickers had acquired the car through his stunt firm and had to fabricate much of the body just to race it, hence the back end literally falling off. It managed a couple of races before blowing up! This was a time when you could literally race anything in the one class at Swaffham, so for instance 133 John Snare won the first race in a Marina! Not bad considering you had the likes of this Yank, a P5 Rover, Jags, Granadas etc all on the track at the same time and the likes of 317 Jack Overy, 303 Dougie George and Swaffham regulars like 9 Banacek (R.I.P.), 160 Winsor, 86 Haller, 137 Batchelor all racing. This meeting was also notable for a saloon stock car rolling clean over the safety fence, something i've only ever witnessed twice at the track.....
