How’s your season been going so far?
Well we were off to a somewhat slow start this December. We went to Val Thorens and our expectations were not that high to begin with, judging on what we had seen so far, but then when we got there, well our predictions were right, the snowfall had been TERRIBLE. We could see grass and rocks on some of the pistes and the only powder to be seen was crunchy and not exactly what you would define as “tasty.” However, we had small consolation knowing that the start of the winter season had not been any kinder to any of the other resorts.
However, this did not perturb us, and being the best skiers on the mountain we quickly adapted to the difficult conditions and sent it hard all over the mountain to ensure total winter dominance. You may have even seen our trip edit “One of those days 2.” We’re pretty good.
The gods of the snow and ice must have witnessed our tremendous skill because the conditions in the Alps have been on the up since then, with Val d’Isère, which is where we’ll be rocking out at the end of our season at the end of this month, having received 10cm of fresh, gnarly pow in the last 24 hours. Seeing these numbers has taken the club to Cloud 9 and have allowed us to continue stomping tricks, finding fresh lines, dodging avy, crushing pow, ripping corduroy, blocking gates, dropping cliffs, nailing blacks and just generally shredding the GNAR.
How’ve DMU been doing?
Apart from having a cool-ish name like “Demon Ski,” it would seem like they quite haven’t got the HANG of the actual sport yet…
Any players to look out for? Rookies who’ve really shone this season?
LUSSC is a breeding point for exceptional talent: we have Chris Diez, Scott Baker, James Campbell, William Mitchell and Laura Whitley who just so happen to describe themselves as “the best skiers on the mountain.” They wouldn’t lie now because LUSSC is also a centre of truth. Our talents as a club range from freestyling and slalom racing, to drinking and fancy dress. Make no mistake, each of these four categories is an essential pillar under the greatness that is LUSSC.
We’ve got four people in particular to look out for, our best freestyler (on the mountain, of course) is Kristian Drew; this guy is the embodiment of steez, throwin backflips, frontflips, you name it, check out his edit. The slalom racer to look out for is definitely this year’s newcomer, Amy Spranger, defined by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Sun as “sex on skis,” “ ” and “good lord almighty she’s fast.” Our alcohol-infused shout-out goes to first-year Amy Metcalfe, who on a five bar bar-crawl had to be carried home before the first bar. Finally, the fancy dresser to look out for is our very own Competitions Captain, James Campbell, who for the “50 Shades of Grey” theme came as a Dulux Colour palette with all the different shades of grey.
Are you going to win? (The only correct answer is a resounding yes)
I don’t think we’ve ever actually lost, and we’re not going to start now.
Score predictions? Bonus points for ridiculous levels of detail.
