Sutton-In-Ashfield Sailing Club

Sutton-In-Ashfield Sailing Club Sutton In Ashfield Sailing Club was formed in 1959 and closed on 30th Sep 2022 on expiry of its lease Showers and changing room facilities available.

Sutton In Ashfield Sailing Club was formed in 1959 and continues as a fairly small but very friendly club sailing various classes of dinghy. Kings Mill Reservoir, which is also a nature reserve, is an excellent small sailing water with nine marks allowing for a variety of courses for all conditions. SASC has a really good club house with new bar and kitchen facilities installed in 2007. A wood bur

ning stove for heating during the colder months creates a welcoming atmosphere when coming off the water or just watching. Good sailing and social programme.

In the next few weeks, Ashfield District Council will commence demolition of the sailing club buildings. These notices have been fixed to the compound fence three times, and have been torn down, presumably by someone who doesn't want the public to know what's going on.

The councils scheme for Kings Mill Reservoir is destined to be a huge white elephant - if you thought the High Pavement 'cycle lane' was a waste of public money.........๐Ÿ˜ก

What a difference a year makes! Photographs of Kings Mill Reservoir taken on New Year's Day 2023. On the same date in 2022, the res was a hive of activity with sailors taking part in the traditional New Year's Day Brass Monkey race, conditions were tough - it was bitterly cold and gusty conditions resulted in multiple capsizes, but hot showers were available and there was refreshment and food in the cosy clubhouse afterwards. This 63 year tradition was brought to an abrupt end when Ashfield District Council evicted the sailing club from the site at the end of September 2022 โ˜น๏ธ

Friday evening was the final presentation night for Sutton-in-Ashfield Sailing Club, following our forced closure by Ashfield District Council. It was held at the Staff of Life, Sutton. A very different affair, usually we're in our cosy clubhouse, and are fed by a small group of talented volunteer caterers, and served cut-price drinks. But 'The Staff' did us proud, the room was all decked up for christmas, and there was an excellent buffet. It was great to see our junior sailors taking home lots of the glassware! It really is the end of an era - 63 years, the club has been running sailing at Kings Mill Reservoir ๐Ÿ˜ช

This is just a reminder for our members that although we are no longer sailing down at Kings Mill Reservoir, that tomorrow, Wednesday 16th November at 7.30pm, we are holding our 2022 Annual General Meeting at the Mansfield Sea Cadets Headquarters in Quarry Lane, Mansfield NG18 5DB

There will be an update on Ashfield District Councilโ€™s latest plans for our old site, and formalities that we need to conclude in respect of the clubโ€™s administration post-closure.

Another great sailing venue, not local but one of the closest to the Kingsmill reservoir over in Derbyshire, wonโ€™t be offering sailing facilities for a considerable period of time!

In the weeks prior to the closure of Sutton in Ashfield Sailing Club, this simple unengraved trophy was discovered at the back of the clubโ€™s trophy cabinet.

At the beginning of September it was donated to the Lightning 368 Class, members of which travelled to compete in the last ever โ€œOpen Meetingโ€ down at the club earlier in May this year, and it is now a perpetual trophy called the โ€œSutton in Ashfield SC Endeavour Trophyโ€ awarded to a novice entrant competing in their first UK National Championship of the class.

The club is proud to have introduced so many people to the sport of sailing in its 63 year existence, with a number of local people having completed the last ever RYA Level 2 Dinghy Course a couple of weeks before the clubโ€™s closure.

The first winner of the trophy was Allison Hopkins of Chase SC, who only recently started sailing in the spring of this year, completed her RYA Level 2 Course in the late summer at her home club near Birmingham, and finished 21st out of 23 in this yearโ€™s UK Lightning 368 National Championship, finishing every race.

The name of the sailing club will live onโ€ฆ.

Last night was our Final Wednesday Supper down at the Club, and we celebrated with a pizza feast around a campfire and drinking up the remaining bar stock!

The compound is almost cleared, the inside of the clubhouse nearly all stripped out, and the keys will be handed back to ADC this Friday.

The sad end of a 63 year era of club sailing and racing down at the res.

27/09/2022

The last supper tomorrow evening - pizza!
Be there for 7, so we can order the pizzas.
All welcome, bear in mind we have no chairs and no log burner ๐Ÿ˜ช
So bring something to sit on, and wrap up warm (we might light the firepit outside).
