The final round of the 2026 Staffordshire Mixed Touch Series arrived in Stafford on Friday 17th July and saw the biggest number of entrants of the Summer with 10 teams touching off!

Veseyans first game was against Lichfield and the big pitches were an adjustment we took time to adapt to. Callum Fletcher arrived on time and lead the defensive line well if quietly. Late on we went 0-1 down and as Jack Courage, Dave Dwyer and Sam Bartlett searched for the equaliser on their try line an unfortunate interception gave our opponents a second with Andrew Payne walking on for ten seconds in the massively shortened game.

Our second game was against perennial opponents Essington and their great touch tactics saw them beat us 1-4 as they isolated defenders despite hard work from Lawrence Springgate and a Nick Yates tantrum with Alex Shepherd’s darting inside run and dive getting our try and securing his top scorer of the series title taking it off last Summer’s winner Andrew Payne.

Our third game was a tight contest against a strong Rugeley side and an Ethan Taylor weaving score saw us 1-0 up for the majority before we were beaten out wide late on to draw 1-1.

Our final group game was against the talented hosts Stafford. Played in the right spirit we lead from the start with a penalty try and held out valiantly for 5 minutes with Ben Hale and Theo Dwyer showing their massive improvements before the floodgates broke and we conceded 4 but the highlight of the night was to come. A try two years in the making saw Claire Payne diving to score in the corner (like a salmon) after Olivia Breakenridge drew the defenders and skipper Adam Dugmore popped her the ball. Engulfed by her team mates in a massive show of support for “This Girl Can”. The touch side can’t wait to repay the favour and travel to support Izzy Borg at Lichfield Ladies and Olivia at Worcester next season!

Our final game saw us make Essington our most regular opponents as we faced them again and despite continuing our night of great performances we went down 2-3. Adam Dugmore scored both as despite finishing 10th we had a fun night of rugby. Their third try was an interception and our late chance to equalise was spurned by a poor Andrew Payne pass as he didn’t realise Olivia wasn’t 9 foot tall!

Well done to Cannock on winning again. 3rd win of the series so overall champs for the Summer! Touch will carry on as we seek to give competitive, enjoyable playing opportunities to those who want it. Awards and Season Appearance Statistics to follow…

Player of the Night: Adam Dugmore with two tries and two assists. Eejit of the Evening: Andrew Payne for his horrendous pass.

The sixth and penultimate round of the 2026 Staffordshire Mixed Touch Series finally came to Cannock last Friday (10th) for a hot evening of touch rugby.

The standard was set from the off today with brilliantly marked pitches and two strong teams from the hosts. After Stafford dropped out late we faced one of the host sides first and our rugby skills were on show but with several players either debuting or making their first appearances of the Summer some of our touch law naivety gave Cannock two quick tap tries and an inside ball gave their skipper a hat trick before they broke late on past Ethan Taylor with Veseyans camped on the tryline to give the scoreline an uneven 0-4 when it was actually much closer.

In our second game we took these lessons on and worked hard to beat Rugeley 5-2. Alex Shepherd scored twice. The first a brilliant break from Jordan Baldock and try line passes from Olivia Breakenridge and Callum Fletcher putting him in the corner and the second a fantastic run and inside switch from Adam Dugmore gave him the space to wrong foot the defender and score in the centre. Rugeley played some great work to equalise twice but fresh legs and cool hands from Nick Yates and daddy Dave Dwyer gave Theo Dwyer a debut try in the corner with a father-to-son assist. Lemon cordial duly downed post-match. Jordan Baldock put the game beyond doubt with two tries of his own, the second a last minute interception using Andrew Payne as a dummy to get in the corner.

Veseyans third game was our performance of the night as we made up for last weeks disallowed tries and defeated St Leonards 7-2 with two penalty tries adding a gloss to the final score. Alex Shepherd and Jordan Baldock again scored a pair of tries each with a terrible Dave Dwyer pass denying Theo his second try in as many games. Luckily, Izzy broke through the middle to secure the game as the coaches mistimed changes disrupted us and gave St Leonards their scores on the wings despite excellent defence from the returning Holly McCarthy and the super Heidi James cheered on by the youngest member of our fans section - pitchside and pram side.

We still should’ve been the last scorers but first a courageous stumble from Jack and a last minute disallowed try from a Callum Fletcher touch pass stopped our second debutant from scoring in the corner.

This hard work rewarded us with our third chance to win a Bronze medal against last weeks winners Lichfield. However the pressure got to us as the assist king and cool Captain Adam Dugmore mistimed a few offloads and passes and miscommunications from Jordan gave the Greens two interception tries with two more out wide following soon after before we found our footing and Izzy Borg’s quick thinking got her a centre field try before they had the last word to finish third in a 1-5 result as Claire Payne came on the pitch late supporting Ben Cleaver’s brave breaks, pop passes and kind words. A second fourth place finish as we congratulate the winners from the all Cannock final and Derby on their fair play award.

Player of the Night - Alex Shepherd for four fantastic tries moving him top of the season’s scorer charts. Eejit of the Evening - Callum Fletcher for his third consecutive week of arriving late.

Overall Scorers Chart:
Alex Shepherd x11
Ethan Taylor x8
Izzy Borg x7
Adam Dugmore x6
Andrew Payne x5
Jordan Baldock x4
Lawrence Springgate x3
Nick Yates x2
