Gary âGoodNightâ Austin
Unfortunately we didnât come away with the result we wanted, but what a feeling it was to see how far Gary has come and to see him in there fighting for the heavyweight title⊠And what a fight it was!
Gary faced his toughest challenge yet. Coach Rob, a full time coach from Cardiff and an absolute unit of a man!
As soon as the bell goes Gary took to the centre and utilised his sharp footwork and feints to feel out his opponent and time his way inside. His opponent used his size very well to his advantage and kept applying forward pressure not giving Gary any space or time to settle. This did not faze Gary, he worked well defensively off of the back foot and skillfully timed his way inside landing beautiful boxing combinations! Gary really had to put all of skills to use, coming in with big heavy hands and landing monstrous blows to the body and head that would have put most men down onto to the canvas, before using his evasive footwork and manoeuvres to dance around the outside before coming in again.
Round one went to Gary, but it took a toll on our gas tank! Gary had landed some serious bombs, some that wobbled his opponent, but his opponent just kept on coming!
Round 2 starts and itâs more of the same, Robâs relentless pressure and Gary parrying his shots and coming in with big blows. But eventually the pace of the fight and forwards pressure began to wear Gary down and we got clipped with a straight right. It was a mixture of taking a big shot and sheer exhaustion that we couldnât recover from.
For those who may not know, Gary has earned himself the nickname âGoodnightâ for a reason! In all of his 5 outings none of them have seen the final bell! When Gary gloves up and steps inside that ring he has no intention of somebody stepping out again regardless of who it is! Gary is our very own Viking warrior and we are immensely proud of how far he has come. To now be fighting on the main card, for title fights, against full time coaches is a hell of an achievement and shows just how highly he is rated within the organisation.
Now that Gary has come within touching distance of that belt, heâs hungry for more and is determined to get his hands on it! Gary, a man who works full time, coaches part time and is a full time father hasnât got many fights like that left in him and struggles to fully commit to a fight camp due to lifes commitments. But he is ready to give it his absolute all and train like he has never trained before if presented with another shot at a title. And who wouldnât want to see that!
