Met up with some of the lovely people at Marrow earlier this week! They do some great work!
Here is a little introduction to what they do:
"Heyyy! We’re Nottingham marrow, a student-led volunteering project that signs people up onto the Anthony Nolan stem cell register with a simple cheek swab and an applicant form!.
Once on the register there is a 1 in 100 chance that you would be a tissue type match for someone with blood cancer. If you were a match you would go on to donate your stem cell via a method similar to blood donation (in 90% of cases). However, if it is a child that has blood cancer, they require a purer sample and this is taken from the bone marrow (in the other 10% of cases)..
Within 72 hours, your donation is within the recipient and you’ve made a lifesaving or life prolonging donation to a cancer patient where this is there last chance at life..
Most people, after either donation, say that they have a bit of lower back ache/feels like they’ve got to the gym a bit harder than normal. If it’s that easy to get behind, why aren’t we all signed up?!"
