Today's local basketball score: Sunderland 56-53 Richmond Vikings!
Today saw Sunderland Uni take on Richmond Viking. A slow start from the uni saw themselves edging the first quarter out by 4 points.
Sunderland Uni began the second quarter well pushing the lead further to 10 points. However Richmond did not travel all that way for nothing! Richmond fought back well trying to lower the score, at the end of the second quarter Sunderland Uni only had a 8 point lead.
In the third quarter both teams were trading basket for basket. However it was Richmond getting the best of Sunderland Uni lowering their lead to a measly 6 points.
In the fourth Richmond began to pressure more which saw Sunderland Uni turning the ball over a lot more. With only 4 minutes remaining Sunderland Uni found themselves levelled with their opponents at. Mike Kavouras found his range in the fourth to tie the game at 53-53. With 30 seconds remaining Gong Zhenyao was found left open, nailing a 3 pointer to extend the lead the sunderland lead by 3 making it 56-53. Richmond did not give up, with 30 seconds remaining Richmond tried to foul to stop the clock, but to no avail it was game over. Sunderland Uni took the home win with a final score of 56-53!
Sunderland Uni are now on a 7 game win streak in the Durham league competition!
We would also like to say our goodbyes to sunderland Alumni Gong Zhenyao and Shi Zongyu who will sadly be departing us on Friday. It will be sad to see these two players leave us, they have been with us throughout their undergrad and masters programme at the University. We would like to say good luck to both of them for their futures!
