RFYL Spring Cup – Matchday 8

NES Demons vs Chester Town Tigers

NES Demons were back in Spring Cup action yesterday for their penultimate fixture, and as expected it proved to be a fiercely contested encounter with Chester Town Tigers, with both sides level on points heading into kick-off.

The opening exchanges were somewhat subdued, but once the Demons found their rhythm, the tempo lifted noticeably. Responding well to instructions from the touchline, the lads increased their intensity and began to move the ball with confidence. Slick one-two combinations flowed across the pitch, making for an entertaining spell of football.

The breakthrough arrived midway through the first half. Finn unlocked the Chester defence with a perfectly weighted through ball, sending Joey clean through on goal. The striker made no mistake, rifling home emphatically to give the Demons a deserved lead. However, concentration wavered in the closing minutes of the half. A ball that appeared to have gone out of play was allowed to continue, and Chester capitalised, breaking through unchallenged to slot home the equaliser. A reminder, once again, to play to the whistle.

Half-time: 1–1

The second half mirrored the first in quality, with both teams playing some excellent football. It was the Demons who struck next, courtesy of a superbly worked team goal. Patient build-up play saw the ball worked neatly through midfield before Finn turned provider once more, teeing up Harry to finish with real composure.

Momentum briefly swung away from the Demons as Chester responded with two quick goals, handing the home side their first deficit of the match. But showing real character and determination, the lads refused to fold. Their persistence was rewarded when captain Joey continued his fine run of form, grabbing his second goal of the game to restore parity and secure a fully deserved point.

Full-time: NES Demons 3–3 Chester Town Tigers

Overall, it was a highly positive performance. The passing football was excellent in spells, tackles were committed and well-timed, and communication across the pitch was outstanding.

Special mentions go to Finley, who produced a commanding defensive display, throwing himself into every challenge and ensuring little got past him.

Noel also impressed, particularly in the first half, raising his energy levels and competing fiercely in every duel — efforts that earned him the opposition coach’s Man of the Match award.

The Demons’ own Man of the Match accolade went to their No.1, Elijah “Mini Roefs” Newey. In a game full of attacking quality at both ends, his outstanding shot-stopping, sharp distribution, and constant communication proved vital in preserving the result.

PERFECT TEN: SCINTILLATING DEMONS HIT WHICKHAM FOR DOUBLE FIGURES IN FINAL-DAY WASHINGTON WONDERLAND

Joey bags four and Ben nets a hat-trick as NES Demons sign off a memorable campaign with a ruthless 10-0 demolition of Whickham Fellside Whites.

By NES Demon News, 31.05.26

NES DEMONS 10 – WHICKHAM FELLSIDE WHITES 0

The sun was shining, the wind stayed away, and the terraces were packed to the rafters. It was the perfect setting for the final Sunday League clash of the season, and the NES Demons ensured their loyal faithful went home with smiles as bright as the Wearside weather after a clinical, ten-goal masterclass against a spirited Whickham Fellside Whites.

Led out by their ultra-consistent captain Finn McSween, the Demons wasted no time stamping their authority on the contest. The tone was set early on when George unleashed a 25-yard thunderbolt that rattled the crossbar. The ball bounced perfectly into the path of Joey, who showed immense composure to chest the ball down and volley it home to break the deadlock.

The lead was soon doubled in truly spectacular fashion. Finn and Joey combined telepathically near the left corner flag, allowing Finn to loft a looping cross to the back stick. What followed was pure artistry: George met it with a breathtaking, Marco van Basten-style scissor-kick volley, sending the ball flying across the keeper and into the far corner. It was a moment of sublime technique that had the Washington Hub roaring.

The Demons added a third before the interval. The energetic Harry Pearson won back possession in the engine room, turned sharply, and delivered an inch-perfect through ball to CF Ollie, who smartly extended a leg to divert the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper.

HT: NES Demons 3 – 0 Whickham Fellside Whites

WHICKHAM RALLY BEFORE THE FLOODGATES OPEN
Whickham came out for the second half with all guns blazing, desperate to find a route back into the game. They asked serious questions of the Demons' backline, but goalkeeper Elijah was in inspired form. He pulled off a string of crucial saves to preserve his clean sheet, demonstrating flawless handling and picking out teammates with pin-point distribution.

Against the run of play, the Demons grabbed a fourth, and it was a cruel blow for the visitors. Terrific high-pressing from Ollie, Ben, and Finley forced an unfortunate Whickham defender to turn the ball into his own net.

At 4-0, Whickham’s heads understandably dropped after a highly competitive start to the half. The Demons smelled blood and relentlessly shifted into top gear.

Joey claimed his second of the afternoon, driving forward from a new defensive role to latch onto a Harry pass and smash a long-range effort that slipped through the goalkeeper’s fingertips.

Goal number six was route-one football at its finest. Keeper Elijah claimed his fourth assist of the season, launching a monster kick downfield. Ben controlled it brilliantly on the half-turn and coolly slotted it under the goalkeeper.

Ben was just getting started. Shortly after, showing the instincts of a true penalty-box predator, he pinched the ball from a defender and poked it home for his second. Moments later, Ben secured a quick-fire hat-trick, reacting quickest to fire into the bottom right corner after Arthur’s initial strike was parried by the goalkeeper.

At 8-0, the Demons refused to take their foot off the gas. Finn, now pulling the strings in central midfield, unleashed Arthur down the left flank. Arthur drew the keeper out before delivering a cheeky cross to Joey, who tapped in to claim his hat-trick.

With only minutes left on the clock, the relentless Joey put the icing on the cake, bagging his fourth goal of the match and the team's tenth to seal a historic double-figure victory.

THE VERDICT
While the 10-0 scoreline makes for grim reading for Whickham Fellside Whites, they deserve immense credit. They never threw in the towel, kept trying to play football, and remained positive in possession throughout a tough afternoon.

But today belonged to the Demons. It was a complete performance to cap off the season, highlighted by the return of Harry Pearson, who picked up the Man of the Match award. Having missed a few recent fixtures, Pearson was full of drive, determination, and boundless energy—bossing the midfield with a smile on his face from first whistle to last.

A perfect ten on a perfect summer's day.

HEARTBREAK FOR DEMONS: LATE 'PEACH' SEALS VICTORY FOR BOLDON COLTS GIRLS AS DEFENSIVE LAPSES COST NES

By NES News at Downhill Hub (30/05/26)

NES DEMONS 2 - BOLDON COLTS GIRLS 3

A lack of intensity and a costly habit of 'ball watching' came back to haunt the NES Demons, as they surrendered a half-time lead to fall to a frustrating 3-2 defeat against a clinical Boldon Colts Girls side.

While the Demons showed flashes of brilliance—notably a breathtaking team goal in the first half—it was Boldon who possessed that extra yard of desire and sharp edge needed to drag themselves over the line. Despite the setback, there is no time for the Demons to feel sorry for themselves; a quick turnaround sees them back in action tomorrow midday at the Washington Hub against Whickham Fellside Whites, where intensity must be top of the agenda.

HOW THE MATCH UNFOLDED
The opening exchanges were a cagey, even affair, with both sides trading blows like two heavyweights feeling each other out. Both goalkeepers were called into early action, but the Demons' rearguard held firm, matching Boldon's early intensity.

It was NES who broke the deadlock with a goal of genuine quality. After hunting in packs to win the ball back in the engine room, Finn turned provider, slipping a magnificent through-ball down the left channel for George who showed sublime composure to beat his marker before delivering an inch-perfect, left-footed cross to the back post. Joey, arriving with striker’s instincts, was there to coolly slot it into the empty net. 1-0.

The Demons pushed for a second, with substitute Ollie agonizingly close from two incredibly tight angles, while Elijah was called upon at the other end to swat away Boldon attacks with minimum fuss.

HALF-TIME: NES DEMONS 1-0 BOLDON COLTS GIRLS

Whatever was said in the Boldon dugout at the break worked, as the hosts caught the Demons cold immediately after the restart. A lapse in concentration left the NES backline static, allowing Boldon to pounce on a loose ball and level the scoring.

The Demons showed great character to hit back. George, a constant bright spark, took matters into his own hands, unleashing a ferocious drive from outside the box. The Boldon keeper got a glove to it, but the sheer power took it through and into the back of the net to make it 2-1.

But the warning signs regarding the Demons' defensive awareness were not heeded. Despite repeated instructions from the coaching staff to switch on, another bout of ball-watching allowed Boldon to sn**ch a second equalizer midway through the half.

The killer blow arrived late on. The referee awarded Boldon a soft free-kick on the edge of the NES box. It looked dangerous, and the Boldon set-piece specialist didn't disappoint, curling an absolute peach of a strike into the top right corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any match, leaving the Demons empty-handed despite a spirited late charge.

FULL-TIME: NES DEMONS 2-3 BOLDON COLTS GIRLS

The MOTM was awarded to Ben Foot for putting in another good performance at the back. He did the basics well – collecting the ball, getting his head up and finding a pass. His timing when tackling was brilliant, and his communication is getting better in every match. Special mentions go out to Elijah for his GK heroics, Finley for playing through the pain barrier, and to George for his game management, assist and goal.

A final massive thanks to family and friends who came to support the lads. Very much appreciated.

THE MIRACLE OF THE JIMMY LAMB CUP: SEVEN-MAN NES DEMONS STAGE UNBELIEVABLE FIVE-GOAL COMEBACK TO STUN BIRTLEY TOWN GREEN

By NES News at Downhill Hub (23/05/26)

NES DEMONS 5 - BIRTLEY TOWN GREENS 3

Football, bloody hell. If you ever needed a reminder of why we love this game, look no further than this breathtaking Jimmy Lamb Cup tie.

With the odds stacked heavily against them, a depleted NES Demons side showcased the kind of grit, character, and sheer determination that their faithful travelling fans love to applaud. Down and out at half-time, the young Lads produced a second-half performance for the ages to secure a magnificent 5-3 victory.

BARE BONES AND EARLY FRUSTRATION
The pre-match team news brought a heavy blow for the Demons. Missing three vital cogs in the machine - Elijah, Harry, and Ollie - the tactical blueprint had to be thrown out the window.

There was no luxury of a substitutes' bench today; the seven lads who took the field knew they had to go the distance. On the plus side, the returning Finley and Joey provided a massive boost to the starting XI.

The Demons actually started the brighter of the two sides. Playing with plenty of energy, they camped in the Birtley half but lacked that clinical edge. Rushed decisions in the final third led to mounting frustration as half-chances went begging.

Then came the sucker punch. After 10 minutes of Demon dominance, a highly talented Birtley side found their rhythm. Specifically, their clinical number 11 took the game by the scruff of the neck, ruthlessly bagging a first-half hat-trick.

Half-Time: NES Demons 0-3 Birtley Town Green

At 3-0 down, lesser teams would have folded. But the half-time team talk was calm, measured, and assertive. The instructions were clear: close down faster, win the individual 1v1 battles, and show everyone what this team is truly made of.

THE GREAT ESCAPE: A SECOND-HALF ONSLAUGHT
What followed in the second 25 minutes will live long in the memory of everyone watching.

The comeback trail started with a moment of pure, unadulterated genius from the skipper. Ben picked up the ball just inside the opposition half and unleashed a spectacular, long-range effort that sailed into the back of the net. It was comfortably the goal of the morning and the exact spark the Demons needed.

With belief surging through their veins, the Lads piled on the pressure. Joey forced a superb stop from the Birtley keeper to win a corner. Arthur then turned provider, whipping a delightful, pinpoint cross into the danger zone for Finn to ghost in and finish from close range. Game on at 2-3.

Remarkably, less than sixty seconds later, the comeback was complete. The returning Joey showed composure beyond his years, finding space in the box and beautifully placing a low, right-footed drive into the bottom left-hand corner. 3-3, and the away side were rocking.

NOEL'S HEROICS AND THE GRAND FINALE
The equalizer finally woke Birtley back up, and the Green team launched a furious counter-offensive for the next five minutes. Step forward Noel. Having taken over the goalkeeper gloves for the second half, Noel put on an absolute clinic between the sticks, making a string of vital saves to keep the visitors at bay.

Having weathered the storm, the Demons went for the throat. Joey, causing absolute chaos for the Birtley backline, grabbed his second of the match to complete the turnaround, sending the touchline into absolute raptures. 4-3 to the Demons!

There was to be no late heartbreak today. Refusing to let the lead slip, the Lads hunted in packs, unleashing shot after shot. The icing on the cake arrived just before the final whistle when George picked up the ball outside the area and curled a magnificent right-footed effort into the far corner.

Full-Time: NES Demons 5-3 Birtley Town Green

THE VERDICT
This wasn't just a cup win; it was a statement of absolute defiance. To be 3-0 down at the break, with your physical tank already running low because you haven't got a single substitute on the bench, is usually a recipe for a miserable afternoon. Lesser teams would have checked out mentally. The NES Demons did the exact opposite—they dug deep, found another gear, and produced a comeback that embodies the very best of local football.

It was an amazing day and a great match to be involved in. Birtley Greens showed immense heart and effort and should be congratulated for their performance.

The MOTM award was a little different today, with all seven boys sharing the trophy. It would be unfair to separate them on what might just be their most critical learning experience to date.

Special mentions to both Finley and Noel for stepping between the sticks for the Team. Their outfield performances were also strong and critical to the Team’s success.

Never give up. Keep moving forward.

A final massive thanks to family and friends who came to support the lads. Very much appreciated.

NES Demons vs Harton and Westoe Tigers

Yesterday the lads were back in action looking to pick up where they left off on Saturday with another win in the RFYL, could they do it twice off the bounce?

A slow start saw the Tigers go 1-0 up in the first 5 minutes, this meant the boys had work to do. It gave them the kick up the backside they needed however, and just a few minutes later a rebounded shot from Ollie fell nicely for Noel to slot home.

Half time

Second half we came out guns blazing, the passing and tackling on show was a joy to see, and the rewards for such play was about to come. Finn first up with an absolute thunderbolt of a free kick from just past the halfway line that no keeper was saving, before another from Noel after the keeper parried it out again.

Full time

Demons 3-1 H&W Tigers

What pleased us the most was the desire to play as a team rather than individual performances we can sometimes see, and the grit and determination to help each other out, which certainly paid off.

Special mention went to Noel for his team play and overall game, and George also played through injury for the second game running as we only had one sub all weekend. The lads definitely looked like they were feeling the effects of it come full time 😂

The trophy however went home with Benjiano, he played the full 50 minutes both days (along with a few others), and the first half was a menace up front getting in some good positions, and second half a boss at the back. Nothing was getting past him yesterday, a very worthy MOTM performance.
