British Masters Open 2026

This year's British Master Open was held alongside the prestigious PSA British Open in Birmingham, and a small contingent travelled to the event to represent our county.

MO35
In the Men's O35 event, 3/4 seed Jamie Douglas advanced all the way to the final without dropping a game. However, Jamie had to settle for silver as he came up against Lewis Doughty, former WR #169, who took the title in a 3-0 win.

MO45
Former county finalist Jon Tate, now head coach at the University of Birmingham, stormed through the Men's O45 draw, winning 4 matches on the bounce, including a 3-2 win in the final vs the top seed, to lift the MO45 title!

Meanwhile, Tynemouth's Eric Mok lost in round 1, but recovered well to claim the runners-up spot in the plate event.

MO60
Matt Tellyn (Consett) dropped into the plate event after a 3-0 loss in the opening round, but after a mammoth effort in plate round 1, which saw Matt win after taking 3 12-10 tiebreakers, he had to withdraw from his following round.

NOW OPEN FOR ENTRIES...

ANTHONY & Cleopatra, Batman & Robin, crisp sandwiches & ketchup . . . some things are just meant to be together. And so it is with Newbiggin and MatchPoint.

Some of our greatest supporters and most celebrated MatchPoint warriors hail from the surf-spattered Northumberland town. Indeed, legend has it that statues stand in the market place erected to heroic squash figures such as Simon Broatch, the Robsons, Andy Black and John Armstrong - to name but a few.

Those finely-crafted sculptures stand basking in the eternal Newbiggin sunshine, a magnet for noisy seagulls who have eaten too many chips, and just outside the array of designer clothes and jewellery stores which bring the international jetset flocking in their thousands to this ever-glamorous tax haven resort. But worry ye not of all that, MatchPointers. You will have more important things on your mind. You’ll be heading for the venue where such legends were forged - the three courts of the Newbiggin Sports and Community Hub. Yes, for us squash fanatics, the very name will send shivers down your spine. (Well, it sends shivers everywhere if they forget to put the heating on).

This event, our 37th, feels like MatchPoint coming home. Newbiggin. Saturday August 15th. Why did you leave it so long?

With only three courts, this is for a small Band of Brothers and Sisters, a lucky few (well, OK, 44 players, then).

Like McEwan’s Export, this is the one you’ve got to come back for.
