✍🏻 The Grange 1️⃣ – 2️⃣ Southwick FC
The Grange took on last season’s champions and this season’s league leaders Southwick FC this morning in what was a competitive game of football from the very first minute.
Southwick saw more of the ball in the early stages, but The Grange defended well, kept chances to a minimum and did a great job of nullifying their attacking threat.
The lads were particularly dangerous when winning possession and breaking forward. Slocombe, Crossland and Louis Caygill regularly started attacks from deeper areas, allowing Benson, Campbell and Jack Caygill to find good positions and cause the Southwick back line problems throughout the first half.
The Grange then took the lead with arguably our best team goal of the season so far. 👏
Tom Crossland received the ball deep and did brilliantly to find Reece Benson, whose excellent hold-up play allowed him to release the oncoming Jack Caygill. Caygill broke the line before keeping his composure and slotting home to put us 1–0 up. ⚽️
Southwick naturally responded and began to apply more pressure, but the lads stood firm and continued to keep their attacks at bay.
Towards the end of the half, Southwick found the equaliser when a cross into the area reached their number nine, who finished to make it level at the break.
🔁 Half-Time: 1️⃣ – 1️⃣
Southwick again enjoyed more possession in the second half, but The Grange remained organised, contained their attacks and continued to look dangerous on the break, particularly from wide areas.
The midfield three worked tirelessly and made it difficult for Southwick to find any real rhythm.
As the half progressed, both sides had opportunities to take the lead. Goalkeepers at both ends produced good saves, while both defences made some important tackles and interceptions.
With around 15 minutes remaining, Southwick were awarded what we felt was a soft free-kick on the edge of the area. The resulting delivery took a deflection and fell kindly to their number nine, who finished to put Southwick 2–1 ahead.
The Grange were handed a lifeline with around 10 minutes remaining when Southwick were reduced to 10 men following a red card for a dangerous tackle. The lads pushed for the equaliser, but unfortunately we couldn’t find the goal our performance deserved.
An excellent performance against a very good side. Plenty of positives to take despite the result. 👏⚽️
