Four of our coaches from Weights & Cakes CIC spent the day in London this week attending the UK Coaching workshop hosted at Greenhouse Sports

What an absolutely fantastic day.

I personally loved meeting and listening to

We have all come away with new ideas, fresh enthusiasm, practical tools, and perhaps most importantly, reassurance that the work we’re doing in Sunderland is making a difference.

The best things about days like this is the opportunity to connect with other coaches and organisations from across the country. Sharing experiences, discussing challenges, celebrating successes, and learning from one another is invaluable.

Coaching can sometimes feel like you’re figuring things out as you go, so spending time with people who share the same passion for developing young people through sport was incredibly energising.

A huge thank you to UK Coaching and Greenhouse Sports for bringing together such a brilliant group of people. We’re returning home inspired, motivated, and ready to put some of these ideas into action. If you get the opportunity to jump onto one of these sessions, do it. They were fab.

Passionate about being organised? Love a folder for everything? I need some help…..I bloody love coaching but admin is defo not my fav job and I need someone to help me out. We can train you in funding, outcomes etc but I need someone with a real drive and ability to keep me on track! 16.hrs per week initially with potential for increasing hours as we grow. Must be willing to roll up sleeves and just get involved.

Before anyone jumps in, this is absolutely NOT a post bashing GLP-1 medications. They absolutely do have a place and can be life-changing for some people.
What concerns me is the growing idea that losing huge amounts of weight, as quickly as possible, is somehow the ultimate goal. Weight loss without resistance training, movement, education around nutrition, and learning how to fuel your body properly feels like we’re missing the point entirely.

Rapid weight loss can come with big consequences. Loss of muscle mass, hair loss, gallbladder issues, vision changes, nerve problems, and a whole host of other complications can occur when the focus is simply getting smaller as fast as possible.
What worries me most is the message we’re sending out to our young girls (and boys!)

That being skinny matters above everything else.

Above being strong.
Above being capable.
Above being healthy.
Above enjoying food.
Above taking up space.

F**k that.

I’d rather see girls who can deadlift their bodyweight, feel confident in their own skin, understand nutrition, and appreciate what their bodies can do rather than what they weigh. Girls who watch their mums/nanas getting strong, building muscle and lifting weights.

Let’s focus on getting strong, lifting weights, eating good nutritious food and building muscle.
