As winter begins to recede, sowing and planting outdoors can start. seed potatoes, onion and shallots sets, Jerusalem artichoke tubers, and rhubarb sets can all go in. So, too, can few hardy seeds that will germinate at fairly low temperatures - board beans, broccoli, cabbages, leeks, parsnips, peas, and spinach. But most other must still be sown indoors or under the protection of cloches or cold frames.
If that leaves you time on your hands, probably the most useful thing you can do this month is to begin preparing beds for sowing and planting in April and May. Remove any weeds that have survived the winter, rake the soil thoroughly, and apply some fertilizer.
