I recently purchased a mountain bike to go with my other bikes - road bike and an indoor Wattbike.

Cycling is a wonderful activity for fitness and it can be especially good for the over 50s.

Here are a few of the benefits that you will get from Cycling.

1: Cardio & strength workout - Cycling is an excellent way to keep your cardiovascular system healthy. Cycling allows you to put in as much or as little effort as you like, allowing you to build up to, or simply maintain a level of fitness you’re comfortable with.

2: Low impact exercise - One of cycling’s great advantages over activities like running, is that it’s low impact. When each step impacts the ground, the jolt running through the bones in your feet, ankles, knees and hips can cause quite severe pain and discomfort. Whether you’re already suffering from painful joints, or simply don’t want to, cycling is the exercise for you.

3: Mood lifting - It only takes 5 minutes of moderate exercise for you to feel a dramatic uplift in mood. Combine that exercise with the sights, sounds and smells of a two-wheeled adventure through nature, and you won’t want to do anything else.

4: Group activity - Cycling is a great way to spend time with your family and friends of all ages.

5: Look & feel younger - This is what got me into cycling 😊

6: Sharpens your mind -
As you cycle, your mind is constantly making decisions about where you’re going, how to maintain your balance, which gear will I need for that hill, what obstacles there are up ahead, etc…

Having been in lockdown for what feels like an eternity, it’s not surprising that many of us have lost all motivation. You are not alone if you feel distracted and lacklustre when it comes to both work and working out.

Belated Happy New Year to everyone. Looking to ramp up your heart rate? Then interval routines are the way to go.

Timed intervals, rather than reps, are generally ideal for faster pace workouts, and to keep your body in a calorie-burning, metabolic state. They provide good structure so that you know how long to perform an exercise, as well as how long to recover.

With timed training, you’ll generally want to use lighter weights or, as shown below, body-weight exercises and focus on endurance.

If new to interval training, start with 30 secs exercise with 20 secs recovery and aim for 2 complete sets.
To progress the routine, start increasing to 40s on and 15s off for up to 4 sets.

Can You Lose Weight By Walking?

Like most people, I have over-indulged over the last few days. But with the gyms currently closed, there may be an easy way to start burning off those calories.

Over the last 5 days, I've managed to get out and have some lovely walks. Walking requires little in the way of equipment, it can be done more or less anywhere, and it’s less likely to stress the joints in the way that running can.

But just because walking upright is an easy, natural way for us to expend energy from the food we eat, it doesn’t mean that we can’t learn to do it better—and increase the fat burn.

One of the most important things you can do to help stay with your fitness goals is to have a strong reasons for achieving them. If your reasons are pretty weak, little setbacks can cause you to quit. Now even if your reasons are emotionally strong, you’ll have to keep reminding yourself of those reasons because in the face of difficulties, we tend to forget.

Know the price you’re going to have to pay in order to achieve your fitness goals and choose reasons/why’s that are strong enough to get you through any challenges you may face.

Waking up to snow this morning reminded me that winter is upon us, but also so is the risk of vitamin D deficiency and infections. Vitamin D, which is made in our skin following sunlight exposure is essential to keep fit and to fight infections.
Are you getting enough Vitamin D?
Frustratingly, it is winter when we need vitamin D the most; however, it's during winter that it's harder for our skin to absorb & make enough vitamin D, so we need to rely on food sources., which include...
Oily fish – such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel
Red meat
Liver
Egg yolks
Fortified foods – such as some fat spreads and breakfast cereals
Dairy products. However, in the UK, cows' milk is generally NOT a good source of vitamin D because it is not fortified, as it is in some other countries.

www.TurnFit.co. It was good to be back at the gym this morning after lockdown and it was “Leg Day.’ Having a dedicated day for legs is a great fitness investment, so why do so many people avoid training legs?

For many people who go to the gym, leg day is something of a chore. It’s generally the most physically demanding workout, especially if you’re incorporating heavy squats into your routine.

Part of the answer is probably psychological. For example, many men are motivated to train their chest and arms, because these muscles tend to be more visible, whereas big quads and hamstrings won't be visible under a pair of trousers or jeans.

Here are 7 reasons why you should never skip leg day again

1. Maximise your lower body strength: Without at least one day a week that’s dedicated to legs, you’ll never build up your lower body strength.
2. Ensure your muscle growth is balanced: The danger of neglecting legs over time is that your body will start to look disproportionate if you’ve been training your upper body consistently.
3. Don’t overlook one of the great compound exercises: The squat is one of the best overall mass and strength builders, along with deadlifts and the bench press.
4. Build great glutes: Big compound movements like the squats are essential for building big, strong glutes.
5. Perform better at sports: Strong legs are also vital for improving your performance in many sports such as football and rugby.
6. Burn fat more easily: Legs are such a gruelling workout, that they burn a lot of calories, especially if you include heavy squats and leg presses into your routine.
7. And build more muscle – even in your upper body: It’s the extra growth hormone stimulated by intense leg exercises that can also help promote muscle recovery and growth in your upper body by keeping it in a metabolic state – as long as you are working your back, chest and arm muscles consistently as well.
Hopefully, this advice will convince you to never skip leg day in the future!
