You can start strength training today without owning a single piece of kit.
Stand up from a chair without using your hands. Sit back down slow. That's a squat, and that's your muscle working.

People think you need a gym full of machines and a protein shake the size of a fire extinguisher. You need a chair and a bit of effort. The weight is optional. The tension is the point.

Carole says my classes work for complete beginners and for people who've trained for years. Same chair, different day.

You can paint here too.

John Skelcher runs watercolour sessions as part of your membership. No experience needed, no pressure, just a couple of hours making something with your hands while the kettle's on.

People sign up to get fitter and end up with a windowsill full of paintings. That's the bit nobody warns you about. The workout's only half of what comes through the door.

Linda says I make working out almost enjoyable and the yoga's lovely. The art club is the part she hasn't told you about yet.

You'll leave my strength class standing a bit taller than when you walked in.

Not because I shouted, but because your body did something it forgot it could do, and remembered.

Real bodies, real lives, options to sit or stand, you pick. Nobody's watching you - we're all too busy finding out what we can lift.

Stephanie says it could easily become a whole new lifestyle, and she's not wrong!

Still got it.

Three words you'll catch yourself saying after a few weeks of strength work. Carrying the shopping up in one trip. Off the floor without the production. Lifting the grandkids clean off their feet.

I'll let you in on what strength training actually is, by the way. It's not me yelling while you push a barbell. It's putting a bit of tension through your body and watching it answer back. Guns for your T-shirts. Buns for your leggings. The science bit comes free.

Vatsala does most of my strength classes. She says they keep her coming back. That's the whole review, and that's plenty.

Test your balance at home.

The Fitness MOT includes a balance test, so you find out exactly where you stand. Literally. It's free, it takes about ten minutes, you need no kit, and you do it at home. At the end you get an honest picture of where your balance, strength and movement actually are right now. Not a guess. Not a vague feeling. A starting point you can do something with.

One of our members put off finding out for months, did the MOT in an afternoon, and said the only regret was not doing it sooner. That's the usual reaction, to be honest.

Ten minutes, no kit, completely free. Take the Fitness MOT. Link in bio.

Five years. Same trainer. Still turning up.

That's Angi. She's been training with me for over five years now, and when she talks about it she uses words like sincerity, ingenuity, and expertise. I'll take those. But the thing I'm proudest of is just the number. Five years. Because that's what real balance looks like in the end, not a clever trick on one leg, but staying steady, staying strong, and still showing up, year after year after year. Like many others, too.

That's the whole game. Anyone can start. Doing it for five years is the bit that changes your life.

Your feet are bored. Take them somewhere interesting.

Flat carpet, flat lino, flat pavement, day after day. No wonder balance fades. Your feet never have to think. So give them something to react to. Walk in the park where the grass dips and rises. Drive out to the beach and let the sand and shingle shift under you. Find some woodland and pick your way over roots and uneven ground. Every wobble is your body learning. That unpredictable ground is doing more for your balance than any tidy exercise on a flat floor ever will. And if you fancy upping the challenge, take an ice cream for a walk with you.

One of our members swears her balance turned a corner when she started walking the same woodland path a few times a week. Not a class. Not a plan. Just rougher ground, on purpose.

Grab your phone off your grandkids and get on our WhatsApp community.

It’s one of the nicest corners of the internet, and that’s not nothing these days. Quick questions, the odd photo, a laugh, people cheering each other on, and someone always around who gets it. No spam, no selling, no nonsense. Just the bit of Jim’s Gym that carries on between the classes. It’s the reason a membership feels less like a gym and more like a place you belong.

Come for the classes, stay for the natter.

Bop, don't drop.

That's Dancercise with Anna Wicks in a nutshell. It's the most fun you can have while your body quietly does the serious work. Changing direction, shifting your weight, catching the next move before it lands, that's reactive balance, the real kind, the kind that stops a stumble becoming a fall. And here's what most people don't know: dance is one of the best things going for your brain, too.

Movement, quick thinking, and music all at once. There's a growing pile of research linking that combination to sharper memory and attention as we get older. You'll just think you're dancing.

Jane says Jim makes the classes fun and easy to follow, and that if you can't make it live, they're recorded. Of course they are. The balance, the brain, and the laugh, whenever it suits you.
