Thomas reflects on becoming a professional climber, his deep connection to Yosemite Valley, and the influence of the Stone Monkeys era on his life and career. He shares how the impossible continues to motivate him, pushing him to grow through uncertainty and challenge rather than fear failure.

The conversation also explores the emotional meaning behind the Eiger project and how it became a way to honour friends he has lost throughout his climbing journey. Jeff Vargen Podcast | Episode 31

WINGS OF THE ULTRACREPIDARIAN

In this podcast interview, Kevin Roet talks with filmmaker Jeff Vargen about how he unexpectedly became involved in producing the documentary Assault on El Capitan. Jeff explains that the project began with a few video clips taken by Ammon McNeely during the second ascent of Wings of Steel, a route long surrounded by controversy. What started as a small idea quickly grew into a full documentary as Jeff recognised the importance of telling the story carefully and accurately.

Jeff shares how the film expanded to include interviews with members of the Stone Masters, as well as Mark Smith and Richard Jensen, the original first ascensionists. He also speaks openly about the backlash and threats he received after the film’s release, showing how divisive the topic remained. Despite this, Jeff remained committed to giving space to overlooked voices and challenging long-held assumptions, highlighting the power of film to revisit history and spark meaningful dialogue.

Laura Rogora Podcast | Episode 30

SELF COMPETITIVE & OPTIMAL PRESSURE

In the podcast interview, Kevin Roet speaks with Italian climber Laura Rogora about her journey into climbing and the mindset that has shaped her career. Laura explains how she discovered climbing at a young age and why she chose it over gymnastics, which felt too structured and rule-bound. In contrast, climbing offered her freedom, creativity, and individuality, as there is no single “right” way to move on the wall. She also draws a connection between climbing and mathematics, highlighting the importance of analytical thinking, problem solving, and pattern recognition, which often leads her into a focused flow state.

The conversation then turns to Laura’s competitive career, from her early competitions to her transition onto the international scene. She openly discusses the struggles she faced, including pressure, expectations, and managing fear, particularly the fear of falling early on. Laura reflects on how motivation and a continually evolving mindset helped her overcome these challenges. Her strong competitive nature, especially her drive to challenge herself, has pushed her beyond perceived limits and played a key role in her road to success.

Buster Martin Podcast | Episode 28

LESSONS from the PHYSICAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL

In this episode, Kevin Roet sits down with climber and sport therapist Buster Martin for a compelling conversation that connects the physical demands of climbing with the psychology behind high performance. Buster shares how his early fascination with the physical side of the sport led him into sport therapy and a science-based approach to training. Driven by a curiosity to understand why certain methods work, he explores how structure, consistency, and self-awareness form the foundation for both physical strength and mental resilience.

Kevin and Buster also dive into what it really means to try hard, unpacking the mental barriers—fear, hesitation, and self-doubt—that often prevent climbers from giving their full effort. Their discussion moves into the difference between flow states and clutch states, as well as the universal fear of falling, highlighting how psychological strategies and physical training are deeply interconnected. Tune in to hear Buster’s story and gain fresh insight into how the mind and body work together to create stronger, more confident climbers.

Trying Hard | A Skill

Here is a Chris on our Try Hard workshop we ran recently at The Quay Climbing Centre . Trying hard is a skill that can be learnt and taught. It’s about pushing just a little further than what your brain would normally tell itself.

The brain seeks comfort, unless we can train it to enjoy discomfort, small steps at a time. Here is Chris showing that you can always push that little further than where you would normally let go. Sometimes encouragement from a belayer can really help. Just make sure that’s what your climber likes.
