Mapledurham Golf Club - The Harry Chalkin Trophy

This month’s round was played at one of the shorter courses in this seasons venue line up, with a smaller field of 19 players taking to the course.

Once again, we were greeted by a very hot and humid day, with the course looking extremely dry and desperately in need of some rain.
The morning got underway with the a bacon roll and coffee, and it wasn’t long before the first tee-off was away.
Vice Captain Ade Trimmings led the way, picking Tinny and Aaron Burnett as his playing partners for the day.

The dry conditions certainly made things challenging. With the fairways firm, the ball was running out a long way — much further than normal. This made it particularly difficult to judge approach shots, with balls often running through the greens or even rolling off the fairways and into the out-of-bounds.

It certainly gave everyone plenty to think about when choosing clubs off the tee and deciding how to play their approach shots.
However, the difficult conditions didn’t get in the way of some coming in with high scores.

Results
🥇 1st – Keith Hampstead – 42 points
🥈 2nd – Eddie Carrington – 41 points
🥉 3rd – Rob Fisher – 41 points (lost on countback)

Keith Hampstead took a well-deserved first place with an impressive 42 points, while Eddie Carrington and Rob Fisher both finished on 41 points, with Eddie taking second place on countback.
Places 4th, 5th and 6th were also closely contested, finishing on 38 points.

The rest of the table remained very competitive, with the majority of scores sitting in the low to mid-30s.

Donnington Valley Golf Club - The Captains Cup

3rd round of the season and Donnington Valley was the venue on a lovely sunny Saturday morning. Not many had played the course before but a large field of 30 was in attendance.

Usual start to the day with a bacon roll and a coffee on the menu and a beer for some as there was a long wait for some of the groups as we had 8 tee times, two 3-balls and 6 4-balls.

As we drove up to the clubhouse you could see this was going to be a tricky course as it looked tight with plenty of trees in the way, yes you are meant to avoid them but although we may have the gear of the pros, the golf doesn’t always match up!

Nearest the pin in one was the 9th hole, a short 110yd par 3. A tight little hole with the clubhouse 30ft behind the flag making it seem very daunting. Pete Cowling was the winner with a delightful approach.

The course was very busy and the front group had balls flying past them left right and centre with no shout of ‘fore’. This made what started as leisurely round of golf turn into a worrying one as they didn’t know if they were safe or not. The only criticism on what was a lovely course was that there seemed to be a lot of non-golfers around.

Nearest the pin in 2 was the 18th, a short 330yd par 4. This time instead of the clubhouse beyond the green, there was a wedding marquee with guests in attendance. Did hear that someone did put their ball somewhere in the venue (Tony Snellgrove) and no one was struck so all good! The winner, Harrison Todd managing to get there in 2 with no one able to put their ball inside his.

Once all the groups were in, points were counted and there were mainly low scores but the top 5 all hit 33 and above. Congratulations to the winner of the Captains cup, Rob Fisher with 36 points

The Society head out tomorrow for the 3rd round of the season at Donnington Valley. Looks like it’s going to be a lovely day, let’s hope the Golf matches up! ⛳️ 🏌️‍♂️

Thank you to everyone who has popped their heads over the hedge or popped into the pub for a drink and a chat whilst we’ve been busy sorting our garden! Your support keeps us going and made what felt like an impossible task at the beginning of the week a very enjoyable one.
Take advantage of the cracking weather this weekend and join us for a drink or 2!
Sunday is MASSIVE with our meat raffle at 3pm, the last day of the premier league season at 4pm AND James Bradbury performing on our outside stage at 6pm!

Goring and Streatley Golf Club - The Simon Cowling Trophy

Friday afternoon and the second round of the season on what was an overcast day that turned into a gorgeous one to play golf! Goring and Streatley Golf Club was the venue, with a bacon roll and coffee beforehand and a pint for a couple seeing as it’s a Friday!

Goring and Streatley is known to be tricky with its greens being ridiculously quick. To put it into context, The Masters at Augusta have a speed of between 13 and 15 and these greens weren’t far off being 13!

We welcomed debutant Darren Paxford and returning member Adrian McCleary to the field of 19 today.

The course was in great condition and as previously mentioned the greens were quick which some players could get to grips with but others found them tricky and round destroying. The players also had to deal with ‘Heart Attack Hill’ on the front 9 which was hard going pushing a trolley let alone getting a ball up it.

The Nearest the pin in one was on the 9th hole, a nice 150yd par 3, this was won by Bob McCleary with a cracking attempt that could not be beaten.

Nearest the Pin in 2 (15th) was a notoriously tricky hole, short for a par 4 at 298yds but the pin today was in a tough position. Aaron Burnett set the marker leaving his ball within 6 feet after 2. Others, found that you although you could land on the green, staying on it was harder. The eventual winner of the hole was Marc Adams. His tee shot was a wild one and left him on the 16th T-box, way off course with no real shot in. He then played a lovely shot, over the trees onto the green that came to a stop just inside the previous best!

Late afternoon the groups came in, the cards were collected and points calculated. Congratulations to the winner of the Simon Cowling Trophy, Steve Cox, coming in with 40 points, great score on a tough course. 2nd was Pete Price with 36 points and Marc Adams coming in 3rd with 35 points.
