Mezzoforte Dance Company’s aim is to continually develop as a dance school, through inspiring each new generation of pupils to produce outstanding talent. Mezzoforte teachers aspire to produce innovative choreography, which is constantly re-evaluated and work closely with each pupil to ensure they progress to the best of their ability. Mezzoforte Dance Company was founded by Principal Juliet Short on 21st September 1977. Juliet Short was one of the first to specialise in the style of dancing called disco. Disco is an innovative form of dance which originated in the USA in the early 1970s as an up-tempo style of music and dance. Disco was derived from mainly funk and soul music in the large US cities. The era of disco dancing was established in the UK in 1978, when Saturday Night Fever hit people’s screens. Teachers, like Juliet began to specialise in Travolta’s ‘Night Fever’ with dance classes becoming very popular, so much so that dance teachers had to carry on where the film left off. The term freestyle has largely replaced disco over recent years. Disco related to the type of steps and movements that can be performed in a Discotheque (nightclub); they are simple and require little space. Freestyle has evolved to include more travelling steps such as runs and spins, which require more space. Freestyle incorporates Rock ‘n’ Roll, Street Dance, Lyrical Dancing, and Cheerleading. The music can be fast and 'beaty' or slow and sensuous, allowing dancers of all ages to use freedom of expression to enhance their style. Performances
