Stratford Juniors Work Hard over the Holiday!

It may have been the Bank Holiday and the half term break but Stratford upon Avon Boat Club juniors were hard at work on a Junior Coaches Assistant Course at the Club

The course was led by Abi Terry, Club coach and British Rowing umpire: the extensive two day course covered topics such as risk management; warming up and cooling down exercises; understanding the assessment process, coaching behaviours, the code of conduct, responsibility, safety requirements; cold water immersion and hypothermia; developing athleticism and the practical application of boat adjustments

Commenting, Steve Wellstead, Stratford Boat Club’s Junior Coordinator, said “To have a coach of Abi’s experience delivering the course is a major benefit and shows the Club’s commitment to the junior section. The emphasis of the course is to teach the participants how to assist a coach and ensure the safety of all athletes”

Stratford Boat Club is gearing up for the Junior Sprint Regatta at Stratford on Saturday 20 June and also the Junior Summer Camps in July/August which are filling fast but a few places are still available

Stratford Juniors Triumph at the National Schools Regatta!

The weekend saw the annual National Schools Regatta held on the Olympic lake at Eton Dorney. In the baking heat, Stratford upon Avon Boat Club's J17/J18 squad fielded two crews. First to go in the women's Championship Coxless Quadruple Sculls was Martha Cooke, Martha Baines, Maeve Dunn and Poppy Baines. Ranking twenty third in the morning time trial, the crew raced again in the afternoon repechage to secure a place in the Sunday C/D semi-finals. Sunday saw more great racing for the girls culminating in a gripping C Final as the crew diced with Brentford Boat Club throughout the race to deliver a seventh place. Also on Sunday, the Championship Coxless Pair of Xavier Sissins-Roffey and Seth Vondrak took to the lake, the disappointment in narrowly missing out on the B Final soon turned to elation with a spectacular performance to take the win in the C Final. Commenting, Steve Wellstead, Junior Coordinator and J17/18 Coach, said, “It was hotter than the sun! Athletes were smothered in sunblock, hydrated regularly and worn hats and shades for protection!”

Also on Sunday, Day Three of the National Schools Regatta, saw two J16 crews take to the water on a day of extremely hot weather at Dorney Lake. Euan Richter and Ed Appleton in the OJ16 2x sculled well over the 1.9k time trial and came twenty eighth out of thirty eight competitors showing good technique. Orla Linforth, Imogen de Pennington, Maria Ntoukaki and Erin Appleton in the WJ16 4x- came fifteenth out of thirty crews in the time trial. In a very exciting C final, they went from sixth to third and then fourth, only 0.2 seconds off Tideway Scullers with a superb fight for third in the last 500m.

The J14 boys’ time trial delivered a great row, the last 250m was a neck and neck dual with the opposition right alongside them. They really dug in deep to gain a commendably high national placing.

The J14 girls’ time trial saw them place high enough to earn a coveted spot in the finals whereby both they and Hereford Rowing Club went quickly off the start but the latter then pulled away after the first 250m but Leeds Rowing Club then came into the picture. Coxswain Heenan called for a power- ten that saw them nullify the challenge from Leeds and close back onto Hereford: those two boats were the only contenders for the win. The red mist descended upon both crews to the extent they didn’t hear the umpire’s horn so carried on racing for a further 150m beyond the finishing line with associated coaches, umpires, marshals and supporters screaming at them to stop before they rowed back into the boat house!

Stratford Boat Club Wins a Place on the Climate Resilience Programme!

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club has been selected as one of ten organisations to join Stratford on Avon District Council’s Climate Resilient programme – a competitive scheme that will provide the Club with expert support and a personalised Adaptation Action Plan valued at £2,500.

Sustainability West Midlands will take the Club through a climate change adaptation audit, resulting in a tailored plan identifying the Club’s priority actions to protect the Clubhouse, strengthen resilience and keep rowing accessible for all. Once the plan is complete, Stratford Boat Club will receive £10,000 in grant funding.

The Club made the case that support will help the Club to:
• Recover faster after flooding with a more resilient boathouse floor.
• Protect the historic fabric of our building from storms and water damage.
• Cut running costs, helping us keep membership fees affordable.
• Focus volunteer time on rowing, not fundraising for repairs.

The Club’s application was strengthened by the evidence that the Club gathered, including a members’ survey on the impact of extreme weather and proof of how volunteers sustain the Club, support juniors, deliver adaptive rowing and run Learn to Row courses that benefit the whole community.

The Club also demonstrated how Stratford Boat Club leads by practical example such as a junior workshop, the Bee Café, water quality testing, bin audit, Club clean ups, second hand kit sales and washing mountains of lost and found. The Club’s track record of low cost and no cost initiatives shows that every club can take meaningful action, and the Club’s model has been recognised by British Rowing, Sport England, Henley Women’s Regatta and in the House of Commons.

Stratford Boat Club are now ready to apply to Sport England’s Movement Fund for the boathouse floor with support for the Club’s case secured from Think Active Warwickshire. Sustainability West Midlands’ Action Plan will also provide robust evidence to take to Stratford Town Trust, the Club’s landlord, for financial help to safeguard a heritage building increasingly at risk.

Significant work has been undertaken by the Club Management Committee and Land & Buildings Officer for essential roof repairs. Their careful stewardship, supported by everyone who has fundraised or contributed in any way, has put Stratford Boat Club in a strong position to unlock further funding.

Commenting, Claudine Pearson, the Club’s lead on sustainability matters, said, “This win belongs to the whole club and helps to prepare the Club for the next one hundred and fifty years. It has the potential to become a national case study for water sports clubs adapting to a changing climate and keep the lights on for grassroots rowing.”

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club also held their AGM during the week and Jen Cary was unanimously elected President as Paul Stanton has stood down after many years of service to the Club and rowing. Jen Cary also has a long history of service to the Club as an expert cox, the Club’s representative on the West Midlands Rowing Council and is a former Captain of Boats. Jen is the first lady President of the Club. Other changes at the Club include a change of Chairman: the new Chairman taking office in September is to be Eric Appleton.

At AGM, Stratford upon Avon Boat Club took time out to recognize ‘Personalities of the Year’: these are awards voted on by all the coaches and committee members of the Club. The pots for the awards were donated by Felix Badcock’s (a past President) wife Jane from the vast collection that Felix had amassed over many years of competitive rowing which gave the awards special provenance and significance.

The Junior Felix Award was presented to Reuben Stanford, a J15 squad athlete. His award was given for his ongoing helpfulness and willingness to assist at all times. The Senior Felix Award for 2026 was awarded to Gina Fusco. Gina is currently the Women’s Vice Captain and has galvanised the squad into a force to be reckoned with at regional regattas and heads.

Commenting, Dawson Curnock, Chairman of Stratford Boat Club said, “Stratford Boat Club is built on the ethos of volunteering and Gina and Reuben exemplify this in bucket loads. It is heartening to see more volunteers stepping forward to help with our regatta in a couple of weeks’ time on Saturday 21 June and many helpers have also become qualified launch drivers to assist our coaches and ensure the safety of our members whilst out on the water.”

Stratford Juniors & Masters Show Their Mettle!

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club's under 17 squad travelled to the Olympic Course at Eton Dorney earlier in the week to take part in the "Scullery" Regatta. The event, which is run over 2000m, attracts the finest scullers from across the country and visitors from as far afield as South Africa and Ireland.

Stratford women's double scull of Martha Cooke and Martha Baines took to the water first in the time trial with a solid tenth place ahead of the Kingston Rowing Club and West Midlands rivals Hereford Rowing Club. A quality row in the B-Final saw the pair repeat the performance with a fourth place win.

Next up was the women's single scull of Maeve Dunn. After a minor equipment malfunction, Maeve earned herself a spot in the B-Final where she held third place through to the 1500m marker but was then overhauled by her competition in the final 500m after a nail biting race for all gathered at the lake. Commenting, Steve Wellstead J17/18 Coach said, “A superb row to come back after a tough time trial.”

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Women’s masters D VIII were out competing again this time at Holme Pierrepont National Water Centre for the Nottingham and Club Regatta. The crew were Ellie Davis (stroke), Gina Fusco, Jane Cryer, Abby Symons, Rebecca England, Corinna Burger, Caroline Collins, Charlotte Jones (bow) and Rachel Evans (cox from City of Cambridge Rowing Club).

In windy conditions and in a borrowed boat, the crew had a solid start and took the lead early against their three opponents. Assertive coxing by Rachel Evans motivated the crew to increase the lead and take the win by a length and a half. Cox Rachel said “The crew were exceptionally responsive and worked together to push us into the lead. It was amazing to cox the crew to another win!”

Stratford Clean Up at Evesham!

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club’s J17 squad were represented by the single scull of Sophie Frankin and the double scull of Isla Dunn and Becca Smith at the weekend’s Evesham Regatta. First down the track was Sophie who was pitted against an experienced Worcester sculler and was unable to hold onto an early lead. The Dunn/Smith combination dominated the semi-final against Pengwern however met their match in a quality AB Severn crew in the final.

The Stratford J15 squad created a presence in Saturday’s racing having success in the finals and keeping the pressure on their competitors in the 1000m knock out races.

First up, the OpJ15 x 2 of Nathan Lebordais and Reuben Stanford took an early win against Magdalen College in their semi final before giving AB Severn a run for their money in the final, placing a well-earned second overall. Lebordais and Stanford returned later in the day as part of the OpJ15x 4 joined by Raya Hothi (cox), Connor Birrell and Tristan Hammick. The crew defeated Magdalen and then Monmouth in the heats to earn a place in the final against AB Severn. While there was a strong start off the line, the AB Severn squad maintained a pace over the 1000 meters that was just out of reach for the Stratford crew who came into second overall.

Abi Dunn competing in the WJ15 x 1 singles brought home some silverware by starting with a convincing first win against her Evesham opponent in the semi-finals setting up a tense head to head final with fellow Stratford rower from J14. During a close race, Abi kept a consistent lead all the way through and secured victory by half a length.

The WJ15 x 4 composed of Martina Bruce (cox), Lily Parsons, Meredith Paul, Bethany Hammond and Scarlett Wheeler delivered a strong performance showing strength, resilience and determination as they beat Monmouth by 2.5 lengths in the semi-final and faced off against a second Monmouth crew in the final. From the start the team pushed for the lead, running neck and neck over the 1000 meters and, in a nail biting finish won by a canvas, taking home the win. This was especially savoured as three in the crew had rowed earlier in the day in their respective WJ15x2 pairs (Parsons/Paul and Bruce/Hothi) and they were keen for a win!

The J14 squad made the most of Evesham’s two day event by representing Stratford Boat Club on both days. Amongst some encouraging performances, and some hard won lessons on pacing and steering, the stand-out crew from Saturday’s longer course were the boys’ quad of Archie Eaton, Chris Durance, Arthur Burt, Ethan Siwakowski and Eli Ford as coxswain. They completely outclassed Magdalene College School in the first round then earned an equally composed win against Cheltenham College to secure a spot in the final where an Evesham/AB Severn Rowing Club composite edged them out in a close race.

Sunday’s sprint started early for Amelia Cruickshank who gamely volunteered to row for an Evesham quad depleted by injury. Returning later that day she joined Islay Milles in the WJ14 single sculls. The two girls mercilessly worked their way through the qualifying rounds to set up a thrilling Stratford-Stratford final that was too close to call until the closing stages when Milles lit the afterburners to edge to victory.

Also, Stratford’s Women’s Masters 2x of Ellie Davies and Gina Fusco, raced in a final against a Women’s Masters E double Stourport crew. Despite steering a rather longer than necessary racing line, the duo were delighted to hold off their opponents and take the win by a canvas.

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club’s J13 squad enjoyed an exciting and memorable day of racing at the Evesham Sprint Regatta, where they competed in singles, doubles and quad scull events. For all the athletes, this was their first experience of side by side racing, making the occasion both challenging and rewarding. Many of the rowers had only rowed in singles or doubles two or three times before, never mind racing them, yet every athlete rose to the occasion and performed admirably under pressure.

The three doubles crews of Hattie McGurk and Zilpha Pope, Ruben Hawkswell and Eftychios Ntoukakis, and Safian Khan and Luke Spurling were first on the water. All three crews showed confidence and determination, each holding their own throughout the race and finishing a very close second.

The singles races followed, with strong performances from Gregor Francis, Enoch Stanford, Georgia Wheeler, Margo Paul, Zilpha Pope, Natasha Wallace and Harriet Wheeler. Despite first time racing nerves, all rowed with composure and confidence. A special mention goes to Margo Paul, who delivered a commanding performance to win the WJ13 singles event, beating the opposition by an impressive two and a half lengths.

In the quad sculls, the boys’ crew of Enoch Stanford (cox), Gregor Francis (stroke), Safian Khan, Eftychios Ntoukakis and Ruben Hawkswell put up a strong and determined performance but were knocked out by the eventual winners, a very strong home crew from Evesham. The girls’ quad of Harriet Wheeler (cox), Margo Paul (stroke), Natasha Wallace, Hattie McGurk and Georgia Wheeler also raced with great spirit, losing to the Evesham crew.

Throughout the day, all crews showed superb teamwork and sportsmanship, running the course during each race to loudly cheer one another on. Commenting, Rebecca Paul, J13 Coach said, “It was a proud and promising first experience of side by side racing and an encouraging sign for the future of these young athletes.”

Next up in eights division the Stratford Women’s Masters D VIII were determined to maximise the six second head start they had against a composite younger Gloucester and Evesham crew. After a solid start and a race pace of 34 strokes per minute, the crew widened the gap and held their opposition over the 1000m course with a convincing win of 3.5 lengths. The crew were Jen Cary, Cox, Ellie Davis Stroke, Gina Fusco, Jane Cryer, Abby Symons, Rebecca England, Lucy Scarlett, Caroline Collins and Charlotte Jones (Bow). Bow seat Charlotte Jones said, “We are delighted with our first win of the regatta season as an eight, following our winter training. We are looking forward to our next race at the Nottingham Masters next week.”

Almost immediately after deboating from the VIII, Rebecca England and Lucy Scarlett took to the river again to race in the senior women's 2x. In their first regatta of the season together, they had a good start and were pleased with their row despite being bested by a very high quality and youthful opposition.

The Women’s Masters low CRI coxed quad of Sarah Walker, Urania Carreiro, Emily Burton and Charlotte Juxon with cox Sarah Bedwell were determined to give the home crew a good race in the semi final. Despite much distraction at the start with a single stuck in a tree, a capsize and a double very much told off for a quick race practice, the crew refocused, stuck to their plan and won comfortably. A few timing issues to improve and with Sarah B still ringing in their ears, it was time for the final. Much more relaxed and ready to fight again the crew raced hard and gained ground quickly. This gave the lift and belief needed and they pushed past their opposition at the half way point, then stayed flat out for the last 500m again winning comfortably.

Their coach Dawson Curnock said of the crew, “Two great performances including the win in their final are the culmination of commitment to training that they embarked upon over three months ago.”

In Stratford's last race of the regatta, the mixed 2x of Rebecca England and Thomas Doherty faced a tough task with local rivals Warwick having a head start due to the masters' handicap system. Despite this, the Stratford double managed a fast start, leaving the blocks at a rate of thirty eight strokes per minute and were able to row down their competition, winning by a length and a half.

Boxing Day Scratch Regatta 2025

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club’s traditional Boxing Day Scratch regatta over 350m from the ferry to the Club grounds is always a superb attraction for the Stratford upon Avon townsfolk and visitors to the town over the Christmas break.

This year’s Boxing Day Scratch Regatta was no exception as twenty rowers together with volunteer coxes took part in the coxed fours knockout round robin racing with the bonus of get out on the river which recently has been hampered by high and fast river conditions.

It was an awesome morning of fun working off the roast potatoes and tins of Quality Street (other confectionery is available!) consumed on Christmas Day! Four crews took to the water: no collisions this year though a number of near misses and re-starts and a great number of really competitive finishes! Crews were made up of the masters, seniors, novices, juniors and even a few returning family members who dusted off the cobwebs to show us how it’s done!

Commenting, Paul Stanton, the Club’s President said, “The start of 2026 is promising and the Club looks forward to training and competing in local, regional and national head of the river races. Luckily another dry, mild Boxing Day which meant plenty of family members and the general public were watching from the Recreation Ground, Bancroft Gardens, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre terrace and the Tramway Bridge. The event was really well supported and organised and a special thanks to Helen on the safety launch, Jon marshalling the start, Helen marshalling the finish line and Dave Edwards for organising the morning!”

Welfare, Wellbeing & Inclusion Award for Mark Dewdney, Stratford’s Head Adaptive Coach

Over the past ten years, Stratford upon Avon Boat Club Adaptive Section has developed one of the largest and certainly the most impairment-diverse squads in the country: an inspiring model of what inclusive sport should like.

The team, led by Stratford’s Head Adaptive Coach Mark Dewdney, now boasts six qualified adaptive coaches with three more currently in training. The coaching team includes neurodiverse and physically impaired coaches with growing female representation.

The squad supports athletes with a wide range of conditions including spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, neurodiverse conditions such as autism and ADHD, multiple sclerosis, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, amputation, stroke, long COVID and many other acquired impairments arising from accident or illness. Commenting, Mark said, “This diversity is not coincidental but reflects a conscious commitment to inclusion, compassion and flexibility. The ethos of the squad is simple: rowing for everyone. We feel all rowing clubs, our governing body (British Rowing) and indeed many sports have a long way to go to be termed "inclusive". National strategies need to be coordinated, properly resourced and given the highest priority. All relevant bodies need to start to deliver. Participation is the only valid measurement of success."

Commenting further, Paul Stanton, Stratford Boat Club’s President said, “This well deserved award for Mark not only is a credit to him but also to the whole adaptive squad family – coaches, buddy rowers, helpers, parents and the athletes themselves! Mark has shown that co-operation and working together can achieve great things for all the rowing and wider community.”
