Open letter to the horse industry...

Dear horse industry,

Please stop tearing people down!
I saw a post the other day brutally tearing down a friend of mine over the welfare of their horse because of the bit it had in and it's 'stressed' expression.
Now I am not one to dismiss horse welfare lightly; but with recent welfare cases such as the one regarding Charlotte, it is very clear that the horse industry is under scrutiny for its level of horse abuse. All I have to say on that matter is that it's about damn time!

The problem here is that changes don't happen over night. Yes in an ideal world we would all love to ride our horses round bridleless, and have our horses trained to the lightest of touches, but the problem is, most of the equine industry doesn't know how to train this! There are only a handful of trainers that I know that can teach this, and even they will say that it can not be done with just any horse; these horses that we see doing liberty and bridleless riding, most of these are trained from a young age, they will have been picked for their temperament, and will have had years of training.
The sad truth is that it's going to take decades for the horse industry to change.
The industry as a whole just doesn't have the knowledge to change the industry overnight, all we can do is work on ourselves to develop our training methods and decrease the stress impact on our horses; eventually then we may get to a point where our equine partners are completely stress free.
The aspect that needs to drastically change are the competition regulators such as BD and BS, where it is illegal to compete bridleless, and the general expectation is the reliance on a bit and 'contact'. This in itself, in regards to BD, relies on poor training ethics where a contact should be upheld throughout the entire test. This cannot be done bit or bridleless, this cannot be achieved if the horse is in true self carriage.
The other side of the coin is the reliance of the equine industry on financial backing and sponsorship. The drive to win, and produce horses overtakes the welfare of the horse, instead they become a source of income, a commodity, rather than a family member. Time and again I have seen it with children and ponies, parents declaring the pony as unsuitable or not capable and just selling it on; what does this instill in to our children? That again horses are a commodity, unworthy of even having the same status as the family dog, they are replaceable.
But worst of all are the people in the industry tearing each other down without knowing the depths that some of us are trying to go to improve the welfare of our horses. No we can't get it all right overnight. The horse industry has been against its horses for centuries, and just because some pony patter thinks they are better than the rest of us, they think they have the right to tear everyone else down.
These people don't know the harm that they cause. These people are worse than those of us who haven't got it right yet, and that's because they are consciously making the desicion to cause harm. Instead of offering kind words of support and advice, offering to share in their knowledge of how to improve horse welfare, they are deliberately going out of their way to cause hurt, shame and abuse people.
So come on pony patters, show us how it's supposed to be done. Start offering some online tutorials or masterclasses on how to deal with highly strung competition horses; show us how to retrain exracehorses, or horses that have been so badly abused and I mean real abuse, that they are dangerous; because honestly, most of us In the industry are always open to learning new techniques. But the problem is, most of you don't know, your too busy play ponies and hiding behind your keyboards.

Happy children again, doesn't take much 🤣 thank you Jennie Sharpe JK Equestrian

If I have to put the sport before the horse, then I don't want to compete.

If I have to abuse my horse to get to the top, then it's not worth it.

If I have to jeopardise my relationship with my horse to win, then I'd rather lose.

If I have to use force to make my horse perform, then I am not a horseman.

If I have to give up on equestrianism as a sport, then so be it.

I am against horse sport as it is now! I will only ever follow true Horsemanship.

It has taken me these past two days to conclude my views of Charlotte Dujardin (CDJ) In light of the ongoing investigation by the FEI.

Having now seen the video, as many of you now have, it highlights not just the failures of CDJ but also the failure of the entire horse industry.

The abuse shown in the video is common practise in the equestrian industry! It is not just Charlotte, it has been taught to her as she is now teaching it to her students. The upper levels of competition are fueled by poor Horsemanship, as horse sports are no longer fueled by passion for the horse, but money and glory.

For more read my article published last week by Equitas . The equine industry needs to change and if it can't then perhaps the sport needs to die.

My thoughts are with Racing commentator John Hunt tonight, after the shooting of his wife and two daughters. No one deserves such tragedy in their lifetime, so everyone please put him in your prayers this evening. 🙏

Everyone of us In the horse industry has thay one special horse; that one horse that 'made' us. For me that horse was Bobby.

I was brought him when I was 10, he was my first horse and he taught me that at 10 years old I didn't have a clue what I was doing. Yet three years in to our partnership things clicked and he leant me wings. He made me believe anything was possible and together we achieved things that dreams are made of.

Then when I was 17 he died of a heart attack. We had been out hacking and had just pulled in to the car park of the college where I was studying when he started screaming. If you've never heard a horse scream then I pray you never do. I immediately got off, and as soon as I did he collapsed to the floor, if I had still been on board I would have been severly injured with the force he went down. The riding lessons that were going on in the adjacent arenas were stopped and the instructors came running, however within 10 minutes he was dead.

I was told I was lucky I got off when I did and asked why; I responded that he had been screaming... No one else had heard him. Of the 20+ people that witnessed it, not one person had heard the soul wrenching screaming. That screaming that only I could hear had saved me from being crushed by him.

I was devastated. I felt like my whole world broke in that moment. He was an extension of my soul, and now he was gone I had never felt so empty.

I finished my diploma and eventually brought another horse, Thy, buy my heart wasn't in it. I lost my passion for horses and sold Thy and carried on with a normal life.

6 years went by and the kids arrived and soon came bonnie the shetland. After that came jammie. The bug was slowly coming back but not how I thought it would. I wanted a horse I could hack with the girls and maybe do the odd fun ride with.

Enter Ringo. An exracer who had done both suspensories and was looking for a quieter life outside of racing. I walked him down the lane when I tried him and immediately felt a connection.

It didn't take long at all before I wanted to be back in the ring. Not show jumping like I had grown up doing but just low level stuff where I could still get the feeling of it being me and my horse against the world.

Our first year out was awful, my first ode was 80cm, which I thought would be a breeze, the last time I had competed had been Foxhunters so 80cm seemed pretty small. Until I walked the course and realised that actually it now seemed pretty damn big, I'm quite sure the measuring system has changed since I last competed 😂 anyway, I fell off at fence 1 in the showjumping.

The rest of our events ended pretty much the same way, I normally hit the deck. Not because Ringo did anything wrong (except his autistic moments when he realised something has changed, I.e our first time arena eventing and he suddenly realised we weren't jumping showjumps anymore, we were jumping solid fences; he popped the first xc fence a bit hesitantly then proceeded to slam the breaks on at 30mph absolutely no where near the next jump. Obviously I flew straight over his head and laid there on the floor staring at the sky just thinking WTF! )

But our next season got much better and by our third season we had qualified for 7 national Championships in both Unaffiliated showjumping and BD.

Now back to the point, after losing Bobby I had lost my love of horses, I had tried buying another horse, I had tried riding for others but it didn't work. Yet some how Ringo brought it back.

Ringo has so many aspects that are just like Bobby, something about him just connects on a soul level. He is the first horse I trained at liberty and bridleless. He is the first horse that inspired me to learn classical dressage. He struck up a passion in me that I thought was long since dead.

I now have 6 horses, and I connect with and love all of them, but Ringo and bobby are different.
Everyone that knew me and bobby said that bobby was 'my' horse.
Everyone that now knows me and Ringo say the same.

So for me, I am possibly one of the luckiest people in the horse industry; I didn't just have one heart horse, I found two. 💖

I may be biased but these two are just the most adorable duo ever 😍
