In early 2025, Welsh actor Michael Sheen revealed a project he had been working on for two years. After hearing about job losses at the Port Talbot steelworks in South Wales, he decided to act. Around 2,800 people lost work when the last blast furnace closed in 2024, marking the end of traditional steelmaking in the area.
Sheen did not want to just donate. He wanted to show how the debt system works. He learned that unpaid personal debt is often bundled together and sold on a secondary market at a fraction of its face value. Debt buying companies purchase these bundles and can resell them again for even less. The person who originally owed the money still owes the full amount.
To expose that process, Sheen set up his own debt acquisition company. He used £100,000 of his own funds. With it, he bought £1 million worth of debt tied to about 900 people in South Wales. The debt covered everyday things like credit cards, overdrafts, and car finance.
Once his company owned the debt, he did not chase payment. He cancelled it. He wrote it off completely. The 900 individuals no longer owed those amounts and were no longer subject to collection. Sheen said he never knew their names. He only knew where they lived and the type of debt involved. He told Channel 4 he would never know who they are, and he still does not.
The effort became the focus of a Channel 4 documentary called Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway, which aired in March 2025. In the program, Sheen said he wanted to do something big to expose the unfairness of the system and help people going through a tough time. He admitted he did not have £100,000 to throw around, so he wanted the project to be effective.
Sheen is known for roles in Good Omens, Masters of S*x, and the Twilight films. He grew up in Port Talbot, which is why the steelworks closure hit home. After buying and cancelling the debt, his team worked to notify the people affected, since many did not realize their balances had been cleared.
The process Sheen used is legal and mirrors what commercial debt buyers do. The difference is what happens after purchase. Most firms try to collect. Sheen chose to cancel.
