Hi, just to make everyone aware unfortunately as the Crystal Leisure Centre has no full time personnel onsite who are qualified to assess the competency of individuals to climb or boulder, the Crystal Climbing Wall is still not open to the general public except for the supervised evening Climbing Sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays.
If you or a member of your group holds a recognised certificate of competency i.e. either and CWA, CWLA, SPA Award or above, upon prior arrangement with the centre you may be allowed to use the Climbing Wall.

Climbing gyms (or ‘walls’ for short) are one of the easiest and most practical ways into climbing. They help you improve quickly and can also be great fun – whatever your climbing ambitions!

If you’ve never been to a climbing wall before, your first visit can be both intimidating and exciting, and there are a few basic skills you will need to learn before being allowed to climb unsupervised.

Most indoor walls now require beginners to do a taster session, an introductory course or to be supervised by an experienced friend, so if you’re thinking of starting you should first call your local wall and find out when these are offered, how long they take, and what they involve. Such sessions are one of the best ways to learn the ropes, and help ensure that climbing walls are as safe as possible for everyone.

Your instructor will show you crucial skills such as how to correctly put on a climbing harness, how to attach yourself to the rope, how to belay another climber and how to safely lower them to the ground once they’ve reached the top. They might also cover warming up, basic climbing moves, how to use the different types of handhold and foothold, and how to use a bouldering wall. The wall will usually lend or rent you equipment for your beginner's course

Ok. still got 2 years to go but...

The Crystal
Can’t believe they have provisionally looked at Lye as a site for one of the New Leisure Centres, and no climbing wall as far as I know. When kids in Stourbridge ask their parents ‘What was in that big space next to Tesco daddy?’ ‘Oh we used to have a local subsidised Leisure Centre’ where you could cheaply swim, skate, roller blade, trampoline, and climb. ….Yeah, we let it go, sorry’.
In 1900 Stourbridge built its first public swimming baths, to promote the general health and wellbeing of the community, the town councils forefathers, and foremothers will be ‘spinning’ (no pun intended) in their graves.
I hope the current council are happy to pass on this decision as a legacy. Nearly every major town has a spanking new’ish ‘local’ public sports facility, Droitwich, Evesham, Kiddie has the New Wyre Forest, Dudley or should I say Sandwell down the road has the Portway, the other towns can do it, so why can Stourbridge.
Gutted folks, and not just for the potential loss of the climbing wall, my kids for one spent many a happy time in the place.
