ONE DAY LEFT
Over the last few years plans have been developed by Northland Wind Power to erect a wind farm in the sea off the west coast of Lewis.
What's so bad about that? It's in the wrong place.
A wind farm of this magnitude is not designed to be this close to the shore.
The proposal in for planning with Marine Scotland just now is to erect 60 turbines each 1100 feet high, with the closest turbine just over 3 and a half miles from the shore.
The Hebrides has never seen anything like this before. If this goes ahead Lewis and the Hebrides will look very different in the future.
Tourism accounts for 15% of the economy of the Hebrides.
80% of tourists who arrive in the Hebrides, do so for "Scenery and Landscape"
3 of the 4 top visitor destinations: Callanish Stones, Blackhouse Village and Iron Age Broch would be directly across from this development.
For many years I have surfed, worked and camped out on the west coast of Lewis. Experiencing the joy of nature, the open Atlantic views and the uninterrupted sunsets and dark skies. This will change all this.
Lets not forget all the people who would live directly opposite this wind farm. Local residents, some who have lived and worked the land for generations and many others who have moved to the area specifically for the unindustrialised nature of the west coast of Lewis.
Will it affect the world class waves on the west coast, i don’t know, will it change the sediment movement and sand build up on the beaches, i don’t know that either. What i do know is that for the next 30 years or so it would seriously change the environment on the west coast of Lewis.
There are plans for proper “offshore’ turbines in the pipeline off our west coast a bit further north than this. They are at least 25 miles offshore and floating. That seems like a way better idea, not right beside us. I’ll be objecting, along with the majority of people I've spoken to about this plan and you can too. Please any help is much appreciated.
