During our skiff workshop today we made up the stern support cage, just two strips of metal so we can build back and keep the same curve and have a frame to work to. Thanks to George for welding parts together.

Removed yet more damp rotten wood. We hope to start rebuilding the stern post at our next workshop.

The Bow rowing pin / post has been replace and refitted and additional work to the rudder for the Gudgons.

We have 4 wood strip clamped to the bow (thanks to George for this idea) to try and pre-form them to shape ready for laminating. If you have a steam wall paper remover please bring it along so we can steam the wood strips to shape.

Soon it will be time to start painting so if you have any usable undercoat paint please bring it along, the following week we could add top coats of paint, will be looking for gloss red, white, black and cream paints similar to existing colours.

Cheers Gerald.

Another good Skiff Workshop... continuing with the rudder adaptation to take the new Pintles and Gudgons, Craig helping to remove more damp rotted wood from the stern post and Annabelle re-fitting the oar posts and repairing the cox seat... Hopefully we can start to rebuild the stern post, looking at March 14th to start this as by then should have some fresh West epoxy, picking it up from Caley marine when we are over next. We have a much bigger hole in the boat but will be better for it as no point leaving rotten wood.

More work on our St Ayles Skiff Skiff 'Madadh Ruadh' today. Work continuing on the stern post which is quite rotten, and the rot has extended into then plank ends. One of those jobs that has to be done but quite a nightmare... Non of us are wood workers or boat builders, and were not involved with the original build... But hopefully we can patch up the holes and make the post strong enough. Have also started on the rudder to fit the new Pintles and Gudgons, this may take a while... The bow also needs some work but that will have to wait, it is not as bad and may well have to hang on for the next season. At least we had nice tea & biscuits to keep us going...

Following checks of our Stornoway Rowing Clubs St Ayles Skiff 'Madadh Ruadh' as we near the end of October it looks like we have some jobs and repairs to make over the winter and spring months. There is work to sort out some 'scuffing' to one or two hull planks and both the tops of the Bow and Stern posts have some very soft wood and have delaminated and this will need sorting. The original rudder pins have finally rusted and become too weak to use. We could really do with somewhere undercover to store and work on the skiff, but will see how it works out... If the rudder pins can be replaced we may still be able to have one or two outings before the winter haul out...

Following our first outing on Wednesday 10th April I have finally got round to posting a few photos. It was warm in the sun and chilly in the shade, we really had a nice time and looking forward to more skiffing adventures... We are thinking about returning to a regular club night on either a Wednesday or a Thursday, let us know if there is a preference.

The St Ayles Skiff coastal rowing project has been and continues to be a growing community success, who would have though you could have so much fun on the water messing about in a boat. If you would like to pop along and give it a go, just let us know, we are a mostly harmless club and can provide all essential equipment and instruction, it really is very simple. You would need to dress in warm clothes and preferably soft shoes or trainers, but happy you come along as you like, suites of armour are discourage as the weight tends to capsized the boat (Skiff)

Take a look at https://scottishcoastalrowing.org/ for all sorts of interesting information and stories all about the world of St Ayles Skiff coastal rowing.

If you would like to join in the festive fun you will have to somehow let us know, we do have a WhatsApp group, so we can add you to that or just try and contact us some other way...

This Saturday 9th December the Stornoway Rowing Club are having an informal get together, hoping to have a wee row then pop into the town marina and then meet at Artizan for 1pm. Sabine has booked a table for us and the soup and sandwich menu looks great. So if after reading this you are inspired to come along you will be welcome...

Send us a message or add a comment if you would like more info, I think we intend to meet at the Newton marina around 11am to launch the skiff, then there will be some pottering about but eventually the skiff should make its way along the new Newton channel and out into the expanse that is the harbour, eventually arriving in the town marina... After eats we may even be able to find our way back...
