Research and ambulance service campaigns suggest this is often due to hesitation around:
đź’ˇTouching the chest area
đź’ˇRemoving clothing
💡Fear of doing something “wrong”
ďż˝
But evidence is clear:
đźš‘ Early CPR + early defibrillation = highest chance of survival
Every minute without CPR reduces survival chances by around 10%.

âť—Prioritise life saving over modesty. Clothing is temporary. A life is not.

First Aid Isn't About Knowing Everything...

🤔 I used to think first aid was about having all the answers.

Knowing exactly what to do.
Remembering every procedure.
Being the person everyone turns to in an emergency.

Then I witnessed something that changed my perspective.

A colleague suddenly became unwell at work.

Nothing dramatic.
No flashing lights.
No TV-style emergency.

Just that awful moment where everyone looked at each other and realised...

Nobody knew what to do next.
Not because they didn't care.
Not because they weren't capable.

Because they were waiting for someone else to take charge.

And that's when it hit me:
👉 First aid isn't about being a medical expert.
👉It's about being the person who can step forward when everyone else freezes.

The person who knows how to assess the situation.
The person who can make a decision.
The person who can start helping while others are still wondering what to do.

Most first aid situations aren't major incidents.
They're everyday moments where confidence matters more than perfection.

Because doing something is often far better than doing nothing.

And sometimes, that's all first aid really is:
Having the confidence to take that first step when someone needs help.

đź’” Suspect a Heart Attack? Call 999 immediately

Here is how you can help while you wait for the emergency service:
âś… Help the person sit down and stay calm
âś… Loosen any tight clothing
âś… If they're not allergic and are conscious, offer 300mg aspirin to chew slowly
âś… Reassure them and monitor their condition
âś… Be prepared to start CPR if they become unresponsive and stop breathing normally

First aid isn't just for emergencies—it's about having the confidence to act when it matters most.

"Heavy Bleeding? Here’s How You Can Help"

When someone is bleeding heavily, time is everything.
đźš‘ Would you be able to keep them safe until help arrives?

🩸 Call 999 immediately
🩸 If available, wear gloves to protect both yourself and the casualty
🩸 Check if anything is embedded
🩸 If there is anything embedded - press firmly on either sides of the object
🩸 If there’s nothing embedded, apply firm pressure with a clean pad or dressing
🩸 If the bandage is soaked, replace it with a new one

đźš‘ Knowing how to place someone in the recovery position could save a life.

Here are the key points to remember:

âś… DO
• Check for breathing first: Make sure the casualty is breathing normally before placing them in the recovery position. If they’re not breathing, start CPR.
• Keep the airway open: Gently tilt the head back once they’re in position to ensure the airway stays clear.
• Support the neck and spine when rolling: Roll the casualty onto their side as one smooth, controlled movement.
• Bend the top leg: Position the upper leg at a right angle to stabilise the casualty and prevent them from rolling onto their stomach.
• Monitor their breathing continuously: Stay with them and keep reassessing their breathing until help arrives.

❌ DON’T
• Don’t use the recovery position for someone who isn’t breathing: Unresponsive and can’t wake them? Call 999 immediately to help you assess the breathing and advice whether to start CPR.
• Don’t put anything in their mouth: Never attempt to “clear the airway” with your fingers unless something is clearly visible.
• Don’t leave them unattended: Conditions can change quickly—always stay close.
• Don’t force limbs into place: If there’s obvious injury or resistance, adjust the technique gently and carefully.
• Don’t forget to call 999: If someone is unresponsive—even if they’re breathing—emergency help is always required.

👨‍⚕️ Nothing beats hands-on practice - get in touch if you want to learn life saving skills.
