The 1st XI are on the road again this weekend, still looking for their first league win of the season following last week’s washout at Moorsholm. Saturday sees the 1st XI heading out East to Moorsholm, still looking for our first win of the season. The forecast does not look good but, fingers crossed, the weather will be kind...depending on what you think is kind with the Boro at home in the first leg of the EFL Play-off Semi-Final.

MATCH REPORT (2nd May): BKCC 97ao, Chop Gate CC 100/7 - Chop Gate won by 3 wickets.
Arriving at Chop Gate we were greeted by a lovely view and a warm afternoon. The hosts won the toss and decided to put us in after, presumably, seeing the score from our first match.

Trev went early after making 10 followed swiftly followed by Ben. Ibne and Aqib steadied the ship until Ibne chipped a return catch to Ross Douglas. Aqib was joined by last weekend's top batter, James, and they progressed the total to 53 before Aqib fell for a well-made 20. James again showed good temperament and technique to stand up to bouncers and a bit of chirp from the frustrated bowlers in making 19. Emmad chipped in with 10 but that was about it from a batting line-up that is not yet hitting its straps to be all out for 97.

The bowling department, on the other hand, is performing well. Henry bowled with pace and accuracy from the top end supported well by Ibne, bowling up the hill. The pair reduced the 'Gate to a wobbly 16/4, including the prize wicket of Josh Smith, and when the 5th wicket fell on 27 we looked well in the match. A couple more wickets fell to leave the game in the balance at 65/7 but, unfortunately a sensible partnership of 35 from Jackson and Douglas was enough to see the home side over the line.

Congratulations to Aqib for a good little innings complimented with a wicket to earn this weeks PotM award.

MATCH REPORT: BKCC 40ao, Westerdale 44/5 - Westerdale won by 5 wickets.
Having had the match in doubt in midweek due to ground conditions, the volunteer ground crew worked hard to make the game playable and both teams arrived on a sunny but breezy day.
Electing to bat first, Broughton were rocked back by a superb opening burst by Chris Blackwell, carrying on his brilliant start to the season, by taking 5 wickets to leave us reeling on 20/6. The only Broughton batter to offer any real resistance was 12-year old James Bligh, making his senior debut, who showed the value of patience and good technique to top score with 11. The innings concluded on 40 which was clearly never going to be enough.
Westerdale tinkered with their batting line-up and soon regretted it as Harrison McAllen took 2 wickets in the opening over followed by Anth Smith who repeated the feat to leave Westerdale wobbling on 2 runs for 4 wickets. Sanity was restored with the arrival of Tom Garbutt who took advantage of a short leg-side boundary with a flurry of 4s and 6s to see the 'dale home with a top score in the match of 31no proving that, with confidence and shot selection, it was actually possible to score runs.
Congratulations to James and Harrison for their mature contributions, deservedly earning their PotM awards, and we hope for a better performance and result next time out.

Tomorrow sees the start of a new season for the Langbaurgh League and we start the year with....a BYE. The new league format of one division of 15 teams for the first round of matches is an exciting development but, alphabetically, we are the first team to miss a week. Good luck to all the players and teams getting started this weekend, may the sun shine for all of you!

Sad news, Herbie Johnson passed away on Boxing Day. Herbie was heavily involved with the cricket section for over 50 years and looked after the ground up until very recently. He will be sadly missed. His funeral will be held on 10am Tues 20th Jan at Kirby Church and then back to the sports club for a cricket tea. RIP Herbie.

The stars of Langbaurgh League were out in force at Norton CC on Friday night for the annual Awards night. Gongs aplenty for Div 1 / Gjers Cup winners, Danby, and Div 2 winners, Ingleby Barwick. After a scattering of other awards it was the turn of Henry Severs to step up to receive his award as Div 2 U16 Player of the Year after a standout season opening the bowling and finishing 3rd in the overall league averages. Congratulations also go out to Westerdale Cricket Club’s Ines Blackwell for scooping the Div 1 U16 Player of the Year award.
Unfortunately, the only other thing we won on the night was when Anth won a breakfast for 2 voucher for Whitegates garden centre in the raffle!
And that’s a wrap for the 2025 season. Hope you all winter well and see you in 2026!
