And so the 2026 Langbaurgh League cricket season draws to a close this Saturday with a game against our closest rivals, Chop Gate. The match has very little riding on it mainly due to Danby Cricket Club clinging on for a narrow 1-wicket win against us a few weeks ago and, justifiably, winning the Division 2 title. This means that we will finish the season in second place regardless of the result.
Nevertheless we still aim to end the year on a high as it's been a decent season, with a mix of highs and some lows, overall. We are probably left to rue not batting well enough at times which eventually cost us a place in Division 1 when the league split after the first round of games. The differential of bonus points gained from our losing games, 9 batting points against 37 bowling points, tells it's own story.
As with many village cricket teams, it is always a difficult task in keeping enough players on the pitch to fulfill our fixtures especially when some other sides in the league are clearly struggling to survive.
We are incredibly grateful to Great Broughton & Kirby Sports Club for providing the excellent facilities, the senior players for their ongoing commitment and to the (many) junior players from Middlesbrough Cricket Club and elsewhere for their contributions throughout the season.

Saturday sees the 1st XI at home again against Hutton Rudby 2s as the home side look to bounce back from last weekends heavy defeat. The first round of fixtures are nearing completion league positions are becoming increasingly important so come down and catch some of the action!

Broughton & Kirby CC 1st XI 102 (35.4) vs Stafford Place CC 1st XI 105/2 (19.4)

Having correctly called the toss and accurately assessing the state of the wicket, Stafford elected to field first. The track was very dry and acted like a recently ploughed field. A few home batters managed to get starts but couldn’t go on to make telling contributions, Trev top-scoring with 23. Having reached a hundred we felt confident that reaching the total would be tough.

A wicket in 2nd over by Trev felt like we had a chance. The Stafford batters gave chances we didn't take and the game ran away quickly. We got another wicket late on but fielding let us down overall as we were left to rue chances missed.

Wednesday night sees the 1st XI in midweek action in the Dorman Cup quarter-final at Stokesley Cricket Club. It's a 6pm meet for a 6:30 start so get there early for what should be an exciting game.

Digging Deep for Victory!
Having won the toss and deciding to bat first against the table-topping side and with a very young team, stand-in skipper, Neil, thought it would be a good idea to run through some batting aims and objectives with the team before the start. This turned out to be completely wasted on the top order as we slipped to 0-3 and then 7-4 and a very early finish looked likely. Fortunately, Hutton prematurely took their foot off the gas a little and James (19) and Neil (27) started a recovery with some watchful batting. As it turned out, the lower order had paid some attention to the game plan and Emmad (28), Max (24) and Sam (with a career-best 21) all registered scores in the 20s. The last 5 wickets added 124 runs as the tail moved the score to a respectable 145 all out in the final over. Gary Crawley was the pick of the Hutton bowlers with 3 wickets.
With the ball, Hutton started confidently and played some nice shots but soon lost wickets as Sam turned in an excellent 6 over spell of left-arm round the wicket bowling to take 4 wickets. The fielding display was also very good with some good catches taken to put pressure on the leaders batting line-up. Max nipped in with 1 wicket, Neil got 3 and Ibne got the final 2 to wrap up a fantastic win against the odds as Hutton were left to reflect on an opportunity missed. Massive credit to all the lads for a brilliant display!
The result lifts us into 7th place in the league table and in some danger of actually finishing in the top 8 for when the league splits for a final round of fixtures in 3 games time.

27th June: BKCC 62/7 beat Kirby Sigston CC 61ao by 3 wickets

On a warm and breezy afternoon at the Broughton Oval, both sides found batting a little tricky on what looked like a reasonable surface. Batting first, Sigston lost a wicket with the first ball of the innings as Harry Thompson chipped the ball to Ben D at midwicket. Dhanush opened from the clubhouse end, showing good promise on debut, and bowled well but without reward. For the visitors, only Jacob Tate (20) and Spree (11) made double figures as wickets fell regularly with Neil taking 4/12 and another young debutant, Tom, taking an excellent 3/7 from 4.2 overs.
In reply and with no quarter bing given by the bowlers or fielders, Ben F made a breezy 14 but it was yet another debutant, Isaac (who also opened the batting), who top scored in the innings with 19 well-made runs including 3x4s. The last of our quartet of young players on debut, Alfie, was unlucky to be stumped by a canny piece of glovework by Richard Tate, a harsh lesson learned about playing senior cricket, as the middle order wobbled again. It was left to Anth to make a telling contribution of 17 to see us over the line.

With Danby a couple of players short at the start due to farming activities it was no surprise that they decided to bat first. Henry and Harrison produced a tidy opening spell picking up a wicket each. Neil got a bit of swing and accounted for Jack and Joe Dowson but Snaith and Kelly added some steel to the middle order with 41 and 30 respectively. Harrison was the pick of the bowlers with 4/42 and Trev, Henry and Neil picked up a couple each. Trev's 10 over spell ended in disaster as he tweaked his back delivering his final ball.
Bravely (some might say foolishly), Trev went out to open the innings with Ben despite being practically immobile and the pair put on a very handy 48 until Trev finally fell but Ben went on the make an excellent 50. Unfortunately after Ben was out, playing a tired swish across the line with the score in the 90s, the middle order and tail offered very little resistance as we fell comfortably short of the target.
The game itself was notable for two things, firstly Henry was called for a no-ball having had a catch taken behind the stumps as Aqib lost concentration and was off the field when the ball was bowled. Secondly was the absolutely excellent cricket tea provided by Danby Cricket Club which was gratefully gobbled up by players and supporters alike. Some of our junior players have rarely, if ever, experienced the joy of a good cricket tea so "thanks very much!" to the hosts!👏👏👏

After recovering surprisingly well from the emotion of his wedding to Dominyka the day before this match, Ben was joined by his son Charlie for a potentially tricky encounter with Ingleby Barwick. We were also joined by a bunch of Flowers from Derbyshire who boosted the crowd to unprecedented levels and added some spice to the atmosphere.
Batting first, Barwick lost wickets as Henry and Harrison struck early but an excellent 50 from Shoaib and a useful 49 from Akram pushed the score to a respectable 162. Trev the pick of the bowlers with 3/30 and Charlie and Henry picking up a couple each.
With the bat, Charlie proved to be classy loan signing with a well-made 50 (7x4s, 1x6) and Dad, Ben, staved off the hangover long enough for a quickfire 19. Aqib chipped in with 14 but it was skipper, Anth, who pushed the side to a rapid and comfortable win inside 27 overs with another 50 (6x4s, 3x6s) much to the delight of the home support!
