General Information

Go-Kan-Ryu Karate (GKR) is a traditional Japanese style of karate. GKR was founded by Robert Sullivan in Adelaide, South Australia. Robert first began training in the art of karate in 1964, and spent time training and teaching in both Japan and the USA before establishing GKR in 1984. GKR Karate is taught in a non-contact environment and promotes both character and physical development. GKR is a club for all ages and promotes self-defence, fitness, coordination, discipline, confidence and stress relief. People of all walks of life can train together and learn the art of karate in a safe, fun and encouraging environment.

We’re so proud of each and every one of you! It’s fantastic to see the effort, commitment, and enthusiasm you bring to your training sessions. Whether it’s pushing yourselves that little bit harder, supporting your fellow students, or simply turning up with a smile and a willingness to learn, it all makes a difference. ❤️

🥋❤️ **A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR COMPETITORS AT TODAY’S CENTRAL ZONE TOURNAMENT!** ❤️🥋

I honestly cannot express just how incredibly proud I am of every single one of you! 🥹❤️

Some of you are seasoned competitors, some of you are still finding your feet, and for a few of you, today was your **FIRST EVER TIME competing!** How amazing is that?! 👏

Every single one of you went out there and gave it 100%. I know how much hard work goes into training, learning, improving and pushing yourselves, and to see you all putting that into practice today makes me so proud.

Competition takes courage, determination and a willingness to challenge yourself, and you all showed that today. Whether you came home with a medal or not, please remember that it’s not just about the results. It’s about the progress you make, the lessons you learn, the confidence you build and the courage it takes to step onto that mat in the first place.

**You should ALL be proud of yourselves, because I certainly am!** ❤️

A massive shout-out to **Sensei Jordan** and all the hard work he has put into you guys over the past 10 months! 👊🥋 And yes, you read that right… **his class only opened in January this year!** 🙈

The time, effort and dedication he has put into teaching you, helping you develop and encouraging you to keep improving deserve huge recognition. To see how far you’ve all come in such a short space of time is fantastic, and I hope you’re as proud of yourselves as I am of you!

Jordan, you should be incredibly proud of what you’re building with these guys. ❤️

To every single competitor today, thank you for giving it your all. Whether this was your first competition or one of many, you got out there, challenged yourselves and represented your training with pride.

Wow! What can we say about our October grading? 🤩

I think two of the words used by Sensei Libby at both events were “remarkable” and “outstanding” — and I couldn’t agree more!
There was so much enthusiasm across all the grade levels, with awesome effort, focus and determination shown by everyone. There were a couple of surprises thrown in too, with two students who were there for assessment taking the opportunity to grade. What a fantastic achievement! 👏

A really special shout-out has to go to our instructors. ❤️
They don’t always get to see just how much their hard work, patience and encouragement means to the students. Week after week, they push you, encourage you, correct you, challenge you and, most importantly, believe in you — even when you might not quite believe in yourself yet.
They put so much time and effort into preparing you for the next step of your journey, and seeing you all stand up and perform the way you did makes all of that hard work worthwhile.
So, to our instructors — thank you. You should be incredibly proud of the students you’re helping to develop, not just as martial artists, but as people too. 🥋❤️
And to everyone who graded: wear those new belts — or those little pieces of black tape — with pride. You’ve earned them!

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who successfully graded to 9th Kyu & 7th Kyu-Ho! 👏🎉
For our 9th Kyu students, this is a particularly special achievement — 9th Kyu is the very first step on the karate grading ladder. It marks the beginning of a journey built on discipline, perseverance, respect and continuous improvement. 🥋
Our 7th Kyu-Ho students have taken another important step forward, building on the skills and knowledge they’ve developed along the way.
Every belt earned represents hard work, commitment and determination — and every student should be proud of their progress.
🌟 Well done everyone! Keep training, keep learning and keep pushing forward. The journey has only just begun! 👊🥋

Grading Day TOMORROW - 4th October 2026🥋

Congratulations to all of our students who have been put forward for grading this month!🤩

Here’s what you need to know👇🏼

📍 Grading will take place at Birches Head Academy in the MAIN HALL

🕙STUDENTS ATTEMPTING YELLOW OR ORANGE BELT - Grading/Assessment begins at 2pm and will take 1hr.

🕚 ALL OTHER GRADES - Grading/Assessment begins at 3:30pm and will take 1.5 hrs

Don’t be late! Please arrive at least 10mins early to sign in and warm up.

*** Please also remember that the Potters Arf is on tomorrow involving road closures - plan your journey and allow extra time! ***

💳 Grading fee to be paid on arrival at the sign in desk - CARD ONLY.
🥋 Full Gi (karate uniform) including belt AND badge is mandatory at gradings.
💧Bring a bottle of water with you - there will be drink breaks just like a normal class.
Bring your Full training card with you

🥋🔥 **CELEBRATING OUR DOJO FAMILY!** 🔥🥋

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well!

Starting this week, we’re making a small change to our weekly posts! 🎉

Alongside our **Student Leaderboard**, we’ll now be celebrating any **9th Kyu (Yellow Tip)** and **7th Kyu-Ho (Orange Tip)** gradings from the previous week. 🟡🟠

This means our newly graded students don’t have to wait until the next monthly post to receive the recognition they deserve! Every step forward deserves to be celebrated, and we want our whole dojo family to share in those achievements. 👊🥋

So, without further ado…

🎉 **A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR NEW 9TH KYU STUDENTS!** 🎉

These gradings took place between **7th September – 27th September**, and every single one of you should be incredibly proud of the work you’ve put in.
