Young players need to be taught how to create space as a Striker

If you look at some of the top strikers, they are able to play with their back to goal, and create space quickly for a shot. This way, they can move the ball and get the shot away in one smooth motion.

The key detail we see here is understanding where the angle of the ball is and the position of your body to understand what is capable to do in this situation. It doesn't need to be overcomplicated, as long as it is done with speed.

Promoting amazing work at JCR carries across not just to our players, however our coaches also.

Each month we choose a coach of the month, which is dependent on a few things. One is player feedback and parent feedback from their sessions. Another is our Founder noticing the details the coach is putting into their work. Another is whether they are fitting the 5 values a JCR coach should be.

This month our coach of the month was Jermaine for the following reasons:

"Consistent and reliable in every session he runs. Parents have
specifically called out the quality of his coaching and how he
engages with them on the side. Sharp timings, clean transitions
between practices, and the players are working from first whistle to
last"

Great work should always be recognised.

Most players aren’t told to shoot correctly when younger

The technique for shooting or striking, often gets simplified too much. The idea of striking the ball and following through just doesn’t cut it. When you break down the technique there is so much more to it than this.

There are 3 clear phases to a strike, which Dylan takes his player through
Plant phase - where the standing foot is planted
Contact phase - how you connect with the ball
Follow through - where the striking foot ends after shooting

Now these can have even more detail if you really break them down, however the idea a shooting technique is simple is very far away from the truth

Robots don't play football, so why train players like it?

Players should have the freedom to be able to express themselves within sessions, able to make decision's and in a place where it allows them to make a choice on the decisions. It is all good setting up a practice which replicates the game, however a big part of the game is the decision players make.

By giving options, it helps to reinforce the players feeling of how certain movements should feel, what works and what doesn't. This is then what translates into a game, rather than just focusing on movements which are great in practice, however lack real game realism.

The reality of coaching.

Coaching sometimes isn't about teaching the techniques; it's about giving a player that support that's needed in a moment where they are feeling not at their strongest.

It's being the positive role model that helps them to keep on going, helps them on a journey, and is always positive and someone they want to be around.

One thing we pride ourselves on at JCR is how much we give confidence and build players up to be resilient, keep going, and enjoy the journey rather than focusing on the outcome.

We let them know when they do things well, and we make sure we're heard when we let them know they're doing things well.

Meet Louis, one that you don't often see, as more often than not he is behind the camera rather than in front of it 📸

Louis has been one of our coaches for a couple of years now and is also responsible for the top photos you see across our social media platforms.

Louis is absolutely unbelievable with the kids, especially in his group sessions where he leads the strikers' sharpshooter on a Tuesday. His energy is great, bringing high excitement and intense detail to his sessions, and the kids absolutely love his sessions ⚡️

Outside of JCR, Louis also runs a grassroots team, helping young players thrive on and off the pitch. It is a pleasure to have Louie as part of our team, both on our content side and as a coach who is always developing and looking to thrive.
