Last week we had a little chat with BBC Radio Tees for an episode of Secret Tees at the River Tees Watersports Centre about our Outrigger Canoe OC6 Wa'a'lele built in 1976 and 50 years old this year!

Our Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe called Wa'a'lele means "The Canoe That Flies" and came to the UK in 1978 and kick-started the sport of Outrigger Canoe in the UK on Teesside and is still in use today based in Stockon-on-Tees. Donated to the region from Hawaii in connection with the 200-year anniversary of Captain Cook's discovery of Hawaii. She represents "Ohana" which means family in Hawaiian, encompassing not only blood relatives but also close friends, neighbours, and community members bound by mutual care and support.

If you would like to try paddling in Wa'a'lele or a Dragon Boat you're most welcome to try-it and join the Ohana. Wa'a'lele will be in the Flotilla this Saturday for Armed Forces Day and the opening of the Riverside in Stockton-on-Tees flanked by founding Middlesbrough Outrigger Canoe Club members John Ferry and Andy White in their Sea Kayaks.

You will see Tees Valley Dragons on the river Tees throughout the year in Dragon Boat and Outrigger Canoe boats, and our current regular training times are:

Monday - 19:30-21:00
Wednesday - 18:00 to 19:30
Saturday - 09:30 to 11:30

🇬🇧 Flags will be flying high this Saturday 20th June at 12 noon in support of 🇬🇧Armed Forces Day 🇬🇧 in the centre of Stockon-on-Tees on the river as part of the Riverside open day celebrations. Our Outrigger Canoe OC6 Wa’a’lele with a local connection to Captain Cook will be flanked by paddlers near the front of a Flotilla of self-propelled and motorised craft.

Support and engage with the local community. Try out paddling in our Dragon Boat for FREE on Sunday 21st June at 11:30 at River Tees Watersports Centre, North Shore Road, Stockton-on-Tees TS18 2NL.

Serving and ex-forces members, and anyone else is most welcome to give it a try!

Race 4: Salford

Brilliant racing, lovely weather, and a friendly atmosphere made for a thoroughly enjoyable day on and off the water. It was great to see so many teams competing in such good spirits and making the most of a wonderful event.

A special congratulations goes to our ladies’ helm, Hettie, who completed her very first race day today! She did a fantastic job and should be incredibly proud of her achievement.

Thanks to everyone who paddled, supported, and helped make it such a memorable day. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

What a brilliant day at the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival UK in Salford 🐉🚣

Fantastic atmosphere from start to finish, with incredible teamwork, determination, and some great racing on the water. The energy from the crews and the support from spectators made for an unforgettable event.

A huge well done to everyone who took part, organised, volunteered, and cheered from the sidelines. Days like this showcase the very best of community spirit and sport.

Already looking forward our races with the BDA tomorrow! 🏆🌊
