Beckfields were finally back in action with a cup tie against Yarm Athletic, played on what can only be described as the worst pitch in all of Sunday league football.
As expected, the game was scrappy from the off, with plenty of naughty challenges flying in. The opening 15–20 minutes were very even, but it was Yarm who broke the deadlock to take a 1–0 lead.
That goal proved to be the wake up call Beckfields needed. The lads began moving the ball far better, and a lovely through ball released debutant Jordan, who was wiped out in the box. Penalty to Beckfields. Paddy stepped up, calmly sending the keeper the wrong way to level the game at 1–1.
However, some sloppy play something that would creep in too often in the first half allowed Yarm back in, and they regained the lead to make it 2–1.
Half-time: 2–1
The second half saw a much improved Beckfields performance. The lads pushed hard and began to dominate, playing some really good football despite the conditions. The pressure told when Jordan picked up the ball, danced past both Yarm centre-backs and delicately chipped the keeper to make it 2–2. A fantastic goal on his debut.
Against the run of play, Yarm grabbed a third from a well-delivered corner, headed home to make it 3–2.
But Beckfields weren’t done. Showing great grit and determination, the lads kept pushing. Some slick play down the right created space for Patto, who whipped in a Trent-esque cross to the back post. Waiting there was Sowers, whose header could genuinely rival Van Persie for the greatest headed goal of all time an absolute bullet into the top bins. 3–3.
Beckfields continued to press and were finally rewarded in the most Sunday league way imaginable. The Yarm full-back decided to launch the ball roughly 50 feet straight up in the air towards his own goal. Once it reached maximum altitude (it may well have had snow on it), it dropped straight into the net, sending the Beckfields faithful into delirium.
A crazy cup tie, but ultimately the better team came out on top. Beckfields march on in the cup, with a real chance of going all the way. UTB. MOTM -
