📝 Weekend Match Reports 📝

A busy Weekend saw all three Offerton CC senior sides in action, with mixed fortunes across the club.

🏏 1XI vs Chester County Officers

Captain Adam Davies won the toss and elected to bowl first at The Paddock.

Muhammad Akhtar and Naseer Kiani opened the bowling with excellent discipline, beating the bat on numerous occasions but finding little reward. The breakthrough came when Shyam Gollavilli found the edge through to Cian behind the stumps, before Shahab Kiani tore through the middle order with wickets in quick succession as Chester County Officers slipped to 3 wickets down without adding to their score.

Shahab continued his fine spell to finish with impressive figures of 4-43 from 11 overs, while Shyam claimed 2-45 from his 11. Andy Thomas and Muhammad Akhtar returned to help close out the innings, with Shyam also contributing a run out in the final over as Chester County Officers finished on 177-7.

The chase started brightly with Andy Thomas getting off the mark immediately, but Offerton were soon under pressure after losing an early wicket. Cian Simpson will be the first to admit he played one of the worst shots of his career, being bowled first ball while nowhere near the delivery, as Offerton slipped behind the game early.

Shahab Kiani (11), Zakir (6) and Habib (7) all departed before Mohammed Alif joined Andy Thomas to steady the innings. Alif made 18 before falling with the score on 81.

Shyam added 15, while Andy continued to anchor the innings, reaching a well-made half-century before becoming the seventh wicket to fall for 55 with Offerton still needing 62 runs.

Abdul contributed 11 before Naseer was dismissed without scoring, leaving captain Adam Davies and Muhammad Akhtar with a mountain to climb. The pair produced a brilliant late fightback, with Akhtar launching four huge sixes to bring the game back to life.

Needing 10 from the final over, Offerton took the match right down to the wire. Akhtar’s fourth six reduced the equation dramatically before a single on the fourth ball levelled the scores. With one run needed from the final two deliveries and only one wicket remaining, the game was finely poised. Unfortunately, the skipper was bowled from the final ball of the match, leaving the sides to share the points after a thrilling tie.

🏏 2XI vs Heaton Mersey Village

Captain Usman also chose to bowl first after winning the toss.

The bowlers performed well to restrict Heaton Mersey Village to 158-8 from 40 overs, with wickets shared throughout the attack. Zahid led the way with three wickets and a run out, while Oliver, Amir, Harrison and Esme each claimed one wicket.

The chase never really gathered momentum, with six batters unable to reach double figures. Contributions came from Danyal (18), Usman (15), Amir (10) and Esme, who top-scored with 20, but Offerton were unable to build any substantial partnerships and eventually fell 53 runs short.

🏏 3XI vs High Lane CC

The 3XI welcomed High Lane CC to The Paddock, with Offerton bowling first following an uncontested toss.

Faith Ebbage and Cian opened the bowling impressively, with Faith delivering several excellent overs and Cian claiming three wickets as High Lane slipped to 50-3. Stanley then provided control through the middle overs, taking 2-18, while Bailey produced a superb spell after drinks, striking immediately and finishing with outstanding figures of 4-6 from three overs.

There was also a memorable moment for young debutant Alfredo, who claimed his first senior wicket, caught by Cian on the boundary who was saved by Bailey. (Make sure you’re always paying attention Cian)

High Lane were eventually bowled out for 121, with Offerton producing an excellent display in the field and plenty of positives to take from the first innings.

Unfortunately, the chase never got going. Early wickets left the side struggling at 13-3, and despite efforts from Bailey (26) and Paul Thornley (20), wickets continued to fall. Cian’s dismissal also completed an unwanted double-duck weekend, having fallen first ball for the 1XI earlier in the weekend. Faith remained unbeaten on 7, but Offerton were unable to recover and were bowled out well short of the target.

While it wasn’t our day against a strong High Lane side, there were plenty of positives to take from the bowling and fielding performances, and our young players will no doubt come back stronger.

MATCH REPORT

Unfortunately, our 1st XI did not play today after Knutsford were unable to secure a ground. As a result, Offerton were awarded 19 points.

Meanwhile, our 2nd XI welcomed Macclesfield 5th XI to The Paddock. Captain Bailey Hinks won the toss and elected to bat first.

Andy Thomas and Bailey Hinks opened the innings positively, taking 9 runs from the first over. Andy was the first wicket to fall, dismissed for 15 in the fourth over with the score on 28-1.

Cian Simpson joined Bailey at the crease and immediately made an impact, finding the boundary from his very first ball. Having struggled for form recently, Cian showed real intent throughout his innings, while Bailey rotated the strike effectively. After 10 overs, Offerton had moved to 69-1.

Cian continued his aggressive approach, reaching a quick half-century from just 28 balls at the end of the 12th over. He then powered his way to an elegant century in the 23rd over, taking only 59 deliveries to reach the milestone. At the other end, Bailey brought up his own well-deserved fifty in the 26th over.

The pair added an outstanding 184-run partnership before Cian retired on a brilliant 121, an innings featuring 17 fours and 4 sixes. Zakir Hossain then joined Bailey in the middle, although Bailey soon followed Cian back to the pavilion after an excellent 62 from 90 balls, including 4 boundaries.

Habib Khan and Zakir Hossain maintained the momentum and pushed Offerton towards the 300-run mark, scoring 26 and 22 respectively. Karl Martin and Usman Waheed added the finishing touches as Offerton closed on an impressive 291-4 from their allotted overs.

It was a fantastic batting display from the home side.

Knowing wickets would be crucial, Bailey turned to Louie Cassidy and Andy Thomas with the new ball.

Andy struck first, clean bowling one of the openers. Louie then removed two more batsmen, both caught safely by Esme Halford, reducing Macclesfield to 24-3. Louie claimed his third wicket shortly afterwards, with Bailey taking a comfortable catch, leaving the visitors struggling at 37-4.

Macclesfield’s number four, W. Gowin, produced an excellent innings, refusing to give his wicket away and reaching a deserved fifty. Well batted, young man. His innings eventually came to an end on 51 when Karl Martin made the breakthrough.

Karl then claimed a second wicket, with Amir taking both catches. Macclesfield batted out their remaining overs but finished on 141-6, giving Offerton a comprehensive victory and all 19 points.

A massive thank you goes to Ian Halford, who put the whites on and fielded as a substitute during the second innings. Your help was greatly appreciated by everyone at the club.

Tomorrow, our 3rd XI travel to Hawk Green. Come down and support the team if you can!

📝TEAM NEWS📝

Our 2XI host Macclesfield 5XI at The Paddock for a 1:00pm start this weekend.

There are multiple changes to the side, with Bailey Hinks (C), Cian Simpson, Andy Thomas, Zakir Hossain and Habib Khan all coming into the team as they look to strengthen a batting line-up that has made a slow start to the season. Zahid Yaqub and Louie Cassidy also return to the squad, completing seven changes from last week’s side.

Making way are Sikander Khalifa, Dominic Meredith, Abdul Kharoti, Danyal Munir, Harrison Gill, Mitesh Patel and Mohammed Alif, as the 2XI look to keep the winning run going.

Meanwhile, our 3XI make the short trip to Hawk Green, looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Marple 6XI. There are three changes to the side, with Danny Massingham, Harrison Gill and Ollie Palmer coming in for Eshaan Jena-Das, Steve Wharton and Karl Martin.

The 3XI have made an excellent start to the season and will be looking to continue their strong form and keep the pressure on Marple at the top of the table.

Why not come down and support the teams this weekend? With the weather set fair, it promises to be a fantastic weekend of cricket!

🏏 Weekend Match Report 📝

A mixed weekend for Offerton CC, with victories for our 2nd XI and some encouraging performances across all three sides.

1st XI vs Appleton 1XI

Captain Peter Smith won the toss and elected to bat first at The Paddock.

Andy Thomas and Cian Simpson opened the innings, with Andy getting us underway in style with a beautiful cover drive for four in the opening over. Unfortunately, Cian couldn’t replicate last week’s heroics and was dismissed for 0. Zakir followed shortly after, leaving Offerton struggling at 5-2.

Shahab joined Andy at the crease and the pair looked to rebuild. Andy struck another boundary but was dismissed for 10, leaving us 20-3. Habib Khan then fell to a harsh decision without troubling the scorers.

At 28-4, skipper Pete joined Shahab and together they began to steady the innings. Pete took on the role of aggressor, punishing anything loose and launching a huge six on his way to 41 before being bowled. Ben Morgan departed first ball, becoming the fourth batter to fall without scoring.

Shyam added 4, Bailey contributed 8, and Shahab played an excellent innings of 47 before being bowled. Jack Thelwell and Naseer Kiani both added 7 as Offerton were eventually bowled out for 142, a total that felt below par.

With the ball, Jack Thelwell and Naseer Kiani started strongly, keeping scoring opportunities to a minimum. Naseer made the breakthrough, with Cian Simpson taking a catch behind the stumps to leave Appleton 25-1.

Captain Pete rotated his bowlers in search of wickets, introducing Shahab and Shyam, both of whom bowled well without reward. Ben Morgan and Andy Thomas then entered the attack, with Andy producing the standout spell of 3-18 from 5 overs. Despite the efforts, Appleton reached the target five wickets down.

2nd XI vs Marple & Compstall 4XI

Sikander Khalifa lost the toss and was asked to bat first.

Amir Dar and Mitesh Patel opened the innings but both fell early, leaving the side at 20-2. Karl Martin and Mohammed Alif rebuilt well, taking the score to 50 before Karl was dismissed for 23.

Captain SK added 14 before being run out, while Abdul Kharoti provided the innings’ highlight with an explosive 35 from just 38 balls. Mohammed Alif contributed 18, and despite Usman (13), Danyal (9), Harrison (1) and Dominic (0) falling in quick succession, Offerton posted a competitive 155 all out. Esme finished unbeaten on 1.

With the ball, Captain SK and Harrison Gill opened up brilliantly. SK led from the front, claiming 4 wickets and finishing with outstanding figures of 8.2-2-23-4. Harrison bowled tightly throughout, while Amir Dar (10-2-34-3) and Esme Halford (5-1-16-2) also made key contributions.

Harrison returned to pick up a deserved wicket, finishing with figures of 10-3-23-1, as Offerton secured an impressive 46-run victory.

3rd XI vs Marple & Compstall 6XI

Bailey Hinks lost the toss and was asked to bowl first.

Faith Ebbage and Cian Simpson opened the bowling. Faith delivered an excellent spell of disciplined bowling but was unlucky to go wicketless, finishing with figures of 4-0-20-0. Cian created several chances, but unfortunately the fielding let us down on the day, with at least nine catches put down across the innings.

Abdul and Harley also bowled well without reward, before Karl Martin eventually broke through with the first wicket, leaving Marple at 51-1. Strong batting combined with missed opportunities in the field allowed the hosts to continue building.

When Cian and Max returned to the attack, both claimed two wickets each. Cian finished with 7-1-17-2 and Max with 4-0-19-2. Karl rounded off the innings with two more wickets, ending with figures of 7-0-43-2, as Marple posted 173 from their 35 overs.

Chasing 174, Bailey Hinks and Eshaan Jena-Das opened the batting, but Eshaan was bowled without scoring and Bailey soon followed for 10. Abdul made 6 as Offerton slipped to 34-3.

Paul Thornley joined Karl Martin and the pair rebuilt the innings. Karl punished the loose deliveries before Paul was dismissed for 13. Son Harley-James Thornley fell first ball, bringing a promoted Cian Simpson to the crease to face the hat-trick delivery, which he safely negotiated.

Karl and Cian moved the score along nicely before Karl retired on an excellent 53. Stanley Thompson then joined Cian and showed great maturity at the crease, supporting his teammate well before being dismissed for 7 while trying to increase the scoring rate. Max Mannion looked solid before falling for 3, while Steve Wharton suffered some unfortunate luck, padding a wide delivery onto his stumps first ball.

With Faith Ebbage joining Cian, the chase was still alive. Marple spread the field to limit boundary opportunities and bowled tightly. Cian continued to battle hard but eventually found the lone fielder on the leg-side boundary.

Offerton ultimately fell 30 runs short, but there were plenty of positives to take from a determined chase after a difficult afternoon in the field.
