Yesterday was not just a grading day, it was also the final time one of our homegrown Senior Black Belts trained with us.
In 40 years of teaching there are a handful of Students who become just that bit more special. Students who give as much back to the club as the club gave to them. Students who become far more than just another Black Belt or Instructor.
Sensei Owen Rowbottom is one such Student who has stepped up and become far more than was ever envisaged. Like his two older Brothers before him Sensei Luke and Sensei Dylan, he has earned a place in my heart that will forever be grateful for having taught him.
Sensei Owen leaves us to begin his life in University and he takes with him all our love and very best wishes.
All his Bushido Family will miss his infectious smile and impressive attitude to tackle anything thrown at him. His understanding nature and incredible ability to communicate with students and Senior Instructors will be missed so very much.
GOOD LUCK Sensei , have an incredible time at University and know that your Bushido Family will ALWAYS welcome you back with all the love and respect you have so very much earned.

Well the final student to grade put all they had on the line today. Rachel was hoping to move up to Blue Belt in Jiu Jitsu and today was her day.
With a rather disappointing lack of Ukes it was Jayden who filled the breach as sole Uke and partner for Ivar.
As the hours ticked by Rachel gave a very measured but interesting grading. From basic Breakfalls, kicks, strikes and stances to throws and combinations she gave it all she had. Locks , stangle escapes, Uke counters and a plethora of defence combinations tested her skills and her resolve.
At the end she successfully added
5th Kyu Jiu Jitsu to her resume.
As I said this was a measured and yet still a focused grading in which she covered a huge amount of skills.
Huge Congratulations Rachel on a very strong grading, and a massive Thank You to Jayden who continues to impress me with every lesson he attends.
Excellent grading , only one more to round off the year.

A very positive September Grading that saw 2 of our newer devotees of Jiu Jitsu take to the mats to hopefully move up one more step on the ladder.
Andy and Ivar both looked nervous as was expected of less experienced Jiu Jitsu students but that nervousness soon evaporated. With Sensei Helen and Myself overseeing the grading we were soon treated to some very strong technique and ability.
Ivar demonstrated some very impressive throws and combinations followed by equally credible locks and strangle escapes. Andy put in a solid and focused demonstration, showcasing some very impressive Jiu Jitsu.
The grading ended with a pad session that drew the last bits of energy they had and they awaited the result of their 3 hour long grading.
Both students were successful in their endeavours each attaining very credible passes.
Huge Congratulations to both,
Ivar 8th Kyu Jiu Jitsu
Andy 7th Kyu Jiu Jitsu
Well Done on a very credible grading.
Thank You to all those Jiu Jitsu Students who provided a constant supply of Ukes and fresh challenges throughout the grading.
We have ONE more grading to complete the year, so make sure you are ready and have attended the lessons required .

With Gradings only 2 week away the focus was on pulling together everything taught over the past 6 weeks.
There was no Freestyle class today due to holidays and as a result the whole day was handed over to Jiu Jitsu. Basic syllabus for the lower grades and everything left and right handed for the higher grades.
It was a very focused lesson that saw incredible input from all grades.
A big shout out goes to Piotr Wilk who joined us after a 6yr absence due to relocating his family back home to Poland.
Whilst he was a wee bit rusty he was a very strong addition to the lesson. This is the 3rd week running that former students have joined in lessons which proves once you are part of the Bushido Family you are part of it for life. Piotr joined with his 2 daughters Jagoda and Rosza. Rosza went on to become one of Bushido’s World Champions in SportSwords.
I look forward to Piotr joining us again maybe with his daughters and his Son.
Excellent day all round, just some final polishing for those grading and we are all set for Septembers Grading.
Enjoy your weekend

With holidays still decimating numbers it was still a very productive day.
Kata was the order of the day for the Freestyle students, working on stance and uniformity.
Over on the Jiu Jitsu mat syllabus dictated the days menu. Putting together the elements explored over the past few weeks and combining Jiu Jitsu into seamless techniques took lots of effort.
Despite the heat still keeping the dojo nice and toasty( even with the AC on full blast ) everyone made very impressive efforts.
It was a great pleasure today to welcome Sensei Bianca back onto the mat. Sensei Bianca along with Sensei Helen were the first Female Jiu Jitsu Black Belts with both of them passing 1st Dan on the same day.
Gradings are now perilously close and many really need to attend more lessons if they intend to be considered for Septembers Grading.
It would be great to see a greater number of you back on the mats as the holiday season draws to a close .
Next lesson is Monday with Sensei Atticus and Sensei John McManus .
Enjoy your weekend and Thank You for a great lesson.

Yesterday was a scorcher, but with the fans on full blast it was actually quite pleasant in the dojo.

With all the freestyle students away on holiday the evening was dedicated to Jujitsu. Breakfalls were first up with a lot of attention paid to rolling, we then pushed the limits with jumping. I think most of the boundaries with this are mental rather than physical and it's a confidence thing. It can be done, you can do it, you've got to believe you can then do it, don't over think it or you'll hold yourself back πŸ™‚

After a quick hydration break, next up was reflex, where you're given a specific attack to defend and have to think of your feet. Block and counter, make them regret their foolish decision to attack you. It can feel like you're a rabbit in the headlights at first but plenty of practice will see you come on in this section very quickly.

We rounded off the evening with throws. Introducing them to the newer students and advancing them for the longer serving students.

It was a very productive evening, just a shame there wasn't any freestyle students for me to torture πŸ˜‚ hopefully they'll all be back on Saturday ☺️

Sensei Atticus is running the fitness class from 11am so come along and be prepared to push yourself and become a stronger more capable you.

The regular class starts at 12.30, remember there is a grading in September and if you haven't got the hours in then you will not be eligible to grade (minimum 40 hours per grading period)

See you on Saturday!

Another well focused evening with everyone willing to push themselves.

The freestyle class went over stances, punches and kicks. We discussed how to position yourself for each and ways to improve flexibility. The students practiced the blocks on each other and then tried out their round house kicks on a human target.

The Jujitsu class spent the evening working on their reflex drills and then had a bit of fun at the end with some grappling. Sensei's Jacob, Atticus and Luke certainly made the students sweat tonight.

An excellent evening all round and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves... Even if you spent the whole evening pining over what was going on on the other mats πŸ˜‚

Sensei Atticus is running the fitness class on Saturday so let us know if you plan on attending.

Also let us know if you'll be training on the WhatsApp group poll.

See you on Saturday!

A little surprise for the students tonight... So much so I got "what are you doing here" 🀣

Tonight was all about kicks. Front, side, round and thrust. The body mechanics were shown and explained, practiced into the air and then onto a kick shield. There were differing degrees of success but no shortness of effort from everyone πŸ’ͺ🏻

We go again on Thursday evening so come down and train... 6pm - 8pm.

See you at the dojo!

A shorter than usual lesson today due to holidays and student work commitments . That being said it was a very productive and thought provoking lesson.
Application was the content for the entire session that will have resulted in a few bruises ( sorry Sensei Owen) .
This crossover lesson was to show students that Karate and Jiu Jitsu are not total strangers to each other. The techniques covered taught students more about positioning ,and redirecting an opponents energy.
A great lesson with brilliant input from everyone. It was especially productive for the Senior Black Belts and Instructors who had a day off from teaching and were able to train .
Huge Thanks to my Uke for today Sensei Owen.
Enjoy your weekend
