MATCH REPORTS
Sygenta v Riverside Maroons 🔴 -
We travelled through to Falkirk for what is likely to be our final 9-a-side game of the season against Syngenta.
As they have been all season, the boys were excellent again today and worked really hard for each other throughout.
The game started with both sides feeling each other out, with Syngenta seeing more of the ball early on. However, we soon sprang into life with a great through ball from Terry to Stefan, who thought he'd scored, only for the Syngenta goalkeeper to do brilliantly to keep us out following a goal-line scramble.
That chance brought us into the game and we started creating more opportunities, with Stefan again unlucky not to score. Syngenta had chances too, but neither side could break the deadlock until Stefan, who was causing problems down the left, played a great ball into Terry, who finished brilliantly.
Terry then grabbed his second of the game, again from good work by Stefan.
The second half continued as a battle, with both sides creating chances and keeping the goalkeepers on their toes. We found a third through Terry with another excellent finish, before he quickly added a fourth following good work from our midfield.
Syngenta continued to battle and were rewarded with a goal of their own, their striker showing good strength to find the net.
Thanks again to Syngenta for a good game and all the best as they move on to 11-a-side football.
Finally, we just want to say how proud we are of the Maroons this season. The progress they've made and the way they've bonded as a team has been fantastic to see. It's been a really enjoyable season. Well done, boys!

Riverside Whites ⚪️ v Kilsyth Athletic Whites
For our final game of the season we welcomed Kilsyth Athletic Whites, who have provided some stern tests for us in previous meetings. Today would be no different in a league that doesn’t exist but at the same time is very captivating. This season has really tested the Riverside squad depth and again today we shuffled the pack, rolled the dice and rolled up our sleeves. The early exchanges were fairly even although Riverside started to get their high press in place and choke Kilsyth’s ability to play out. This has been the hallmark of the team’s style and resultant success this season and signs were good with this being executed as the coaches would expect.
A number of half chances came Riversides way and then eventually the breakthrough. Angus picked the ball up on the edge of the box and hit the ball on outside of his left foot (a trivela to use the correct football terminology) into the far corner of the goal. The fluency in the Riverside’s play increased and they started to get on top. Lucca strided forward into the midfield and as the pitch opened up in front of him he thumped a long-range effort over the keeper which hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced back off the line. It was debatable if it completely crossed the line, so to avoid controversy I’ll say it hadn’t completely crossed the whitewash. Unfortunately, the VAR official hadn’t turned up today so it remains inconclusive. Kilsyth were largely being kept at bay by the work rate of Riverside and their willingness to track back in midfield when required. Cameron looked assured in goal and pulled off a great block. He kept the ball moving quickly out to his wide players and allowed Riverside to stay on the front foot. Myko then broke along the byeline after beating a couple of defenders and cut the ball back across the keeper, Harry pressed the defender and picking up on the error, Angus was on hand to place the ball past the keeper. Finlay was playing some tidy football in the middle of the park and after a few nice bits of link up play, threaded a lovely ball out to Angus on the edge of the box who cut inside and lashed the ball into the far corner of the net. That ended a very strong first half from Riverside.
Initially, the second half was a quieter affair with Riverside resting a little bit on their laurels. The boys kept on top of Kilsyth’s attempts to get forward and stifled most of their attacking threat. Nyal had a few good runs forward from midfield and caused the Kilsyth keeper to be on his toes with a couple of great saves. Next Charlie looked to add to his remarkable tally this season, he rattled a shot goal bound and somehow it smashed off the crossbar and stayed out. Not that I’m superstitious but the shorts were on the right way today… I say no more. Nyal then provided some entertainment on a number of levels. After having made several successful pursuits forward, he ran onto the ball outside the box and put it as they say, top bins! Rather than a standard goal celebration, we were treated to the unveiling of his six pack. However, not fully appreciating this spectacle, our official for the day showed the yellow card. That was the end of the action and a fabulous result for Riverside.
What can I say about this season. Well firstly, it’s been a pleasure to write about this team’s performances each week. They have provided a lot of joy to us as parents, this season in particular. They’ve been on a bit of a journey and at points a steep learning curve whilst they have looked to establish themselves. Riverside Whites are no longer a development team. They can look to ditch that tag as their efforts and desire have taken them to a higher level and deservedly so. Guided by Scott and Andy they have become a really good football team that work hard for each other. They will continue to learn and develop and I look forward to watch them continue to grow and develop. Also, it’s nice to see Scott has so much faith in the team that he departed along with one of our keepers to the USA before this critical game. Onwards and upwards for the 11 a sides coming soon.
Thanks to Kilsyth Athletic Whites for playing their part in an entertaining game of football and all the best for the 11 a sides next season.
