Many children eat half their day's sugar allowance before school.

Public Health England have said, "Breakfasts have become so unhealthy that pupils eat the equivalent of three cubes (11g) of sugar every morning for breakfast."

The recommended daily allowance of sugar for 4-6 year olds is 5 cubes of sugar, 7-10 years olds is 6 cubes of sugar, and 11+ years is 7 cubes of sugar.

A survey for the Change4Life campaign found a vast majority of parents are unsure what makes up a healthy breakfast for their children.

WHAT IS A HEALTHY START TO YOUR DAY?

The aim should be plenty of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, protein and a glass of water 💦

-Fruit and Vegetables tinned, fresh, dried or frozen are great but be aware to avoid added syrups.
-Natural Yoghurts and Milk
-Wholegrain breads and cereals that are lower in sugar and salt (read the labels to raise your awareness)
-Meat, Fish, Eggs
-Beans and Tomatoes
-Unsalted nuts and seeds!
-Butter and Jams are fine in moderation like most things but I recommend you spread thinly!
-I highly recommend you check out the Change4Life Sugar Swaps campaign for more suggestions

I hope this post will empower your knowledge and give you some new ideas or changes you can apply at home for a healthier lifestyle. Please feel free to tag other parents or share to your friends.

The glycaemic index tells us how fast or slow a food raises our blood glucose levels. Low GI foods will release energy slowly, avoid a spike in your blood sugar levels and leave you feeling fuller for longer. This simple lifestyle change can be effective in reducing your intake of sugar throughout the day. Research has shown that choosing low GI foods will help manage blood glucose levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Less evidence suggests this can help blood glucose control in Type 1 diabetics. A great diet is not judged on your GI ratings but should be considered as a part of a healthy balanced diet.
