We are absolutely thrilled and honoured to announce that we have won the Basketball England East Midlands Community Club of the Year Award! 🏆

This award belongs to every single person who makes our club what it is — our players, coaches, volunteers, parents, supporters and the wider community who continue to believe in what we do.

Thank you to everyone who gives their time, energy, passion and support to help our club grow both on and off the court. This recognition reflects the hard work, dedication, and family spirit that runs throughout the entire club.

We are so proud of what we have achieved together.

" You wouldn't put Little Johnny in top set maths if he is struggling"

Another popular phrase used in coaching and in principle I agree. Setting has for decades been debated in education but is it appropriate for football?

Setting is often used in secondary education and involves reviewing of progress and movement when appropriate.

However what schools do not do is remove Little Johnny from the school because he is struggling in maths.

Some clubs only have 1 team in their age group so surely there is only one "set". Even clubs with more than one team there is lack of fluidity between them and that's often an issue that goes beyond the club itself due to rigid league formats even within the younger ages.

The worst kind of authority in coaching is the one built on fear.

When young players are scared of making mistakes, scared of being yelled at, or scared of disappointing an angry coach… they stop growing. Fear doesn’t develop decision-makers. It develops compliance, hesitation, and anxiety.

A coach’s authority should never come from intimidation.

It should come from:
🔹 Knowledge – so players trust what you teach.
🔹 Consistency – so they know what to expect and feel safe to learn.
🔹 Standards – applied fairly, without humiliation or threats.
🔹 Respect – earned through your behavior, not demanded through fear.

Players don’t need a coach who makes them smaller.
They need a coach who gives them the confidence and tools to grow.

Let’s stop normalizing coaching through fear.
Let’s build authority the right way—through competence, clarity, and character.
