Defender Burghley Horse Trials 3rd - 6th September 2026
www.burghley-horse.co.uk Burghley is both an equestrian sporting event and a social event.

The competition is called a Three-Day-Event with three stages taking place, rather confusingly, over four days: Dressage on Thursday and Friday, Cross Country on Saturday and Show Jumping on Sunday. It is a comprehensive test of all-round horsemanship, and involves almost every activity of which the horse is capable. Every competitor must complete each section and their overall score provides the final placing. For more information on the competition, go to the Three-Day-Event pages. There are also several other competitions taking place in Ring 2 and these are shown on the provisional programme at www.burghley-horse.co.uk The programme is continuously updated up to and during the Event depending on how many horses start the Show Jumping phase on Sunday. Please refer to your programme on event and listen for PA announcements at the Event for the latest times. The social side of Burghley is as varied as the people who attend. Some people take out Membership to enjoy forward parking and access to the Members’ Enclosure. Some prefer to come on a season ticket and take advantage of the flexibility of enjoying picnics, the Food Walk and the food stalls around the showground.

Keeping young children busy all week can be tricky, especially in the summer.

Fortunately, we think of 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 when it comes to putting Defender Burghley together each year, with a special focus on providing little ones (and bigger ones) with plenty to see and do so their parents can enjoy the sport, socialising and shopping.

Our Family Zone is looking better than ever this year, with activities to spark the imaginations of pony fans and even those who aren’t so keen.

Children can get excited about our miniature Defenders track, our Le Mieux hobby horse jumping arena, pottery painting, the Crayola colouring zone, dog agility classes, face painting, the Shetland Pony Grand National, horse riding simulator and much, much more!

We're delighted to announce that Petra's has been named the People's Favourite in this year's Defender Burghley Horse Trials Best Dressed Window Competition.

There is more to the winning window than meets the eye as it was created by 10-year-old Reeva, whose mum previously worked at the salon. Reeva brought this window to life with her own imagination and creativity.

New for 2026, the People's Favourite Award gave the public the chance to vote for the window they liked best, and with over 1,000 votes cast, Petra's came out on top.

A huge thank you to everyone who voted, and to all the businesses who took part and helped create such a fantastic atmosphere in Stamford ahead of Burghley.

The windows will remain in place throughout Defender Burghley Horse Trials, 3-6 September, so there's still time to see them for yourself.
