“Back when I first started hearing rumours about Chelsea wanting to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, I happened to watch their next game. He scored and pointed to the Benfica badge, saying he was going nowhere.

That was the moment I started disliking him. Not because he wasn’t a good footballer, but because of the gesture he displayed.

Players like that are not loyal. They show love for the badge when it suits them, then turn their backs on the club when things get difficult.

But look at him now. A snake, leaving the club when he’s needed the most and for what? A move to Manchester City, which is a downgrade from Chelsea.

🚨💣I would say we already have the right tools within the club to fix our defensive woes, but only if Xabi Alonso can identify and select the right combination of defenders.

Clearly, the Fofana — Lacroix — Colwill defensive combination wasn't as effective against Brighton yesterday as the Acheampong — Lacroix — Colwill combination was against Fulham in Matchweek 1.

Since we've now tried these two combinations in Matchweeks 1 and 2 respectively, and have conceded five goals in the process, I think it's time to look at another option.

For me, the best defensive combination going forward should be Acheampong — Lacroix — Hato, with the others providing options from the bench.

Did you see Acheampong's 1-v-1 challenge yesterday? He was absolutely top-notch. I don't think he was dribbled past even once. His defensive work was impressive, and he looked far more assured than he is sometimes given credit for.

Hato, on the other hand, was also excellent on that left-hand side. He looked comfortable, composed and confident, and I believe he deserves a starting opportunity ahead of Colwill, at least for now.

Lacroix has been class since his debut. The problem isn't necessarily the player himself; it's the wrong defensive combinations that keep failing him. He has shown enough to suggest that he can be a reliable figure at the back if the right players are placed around him.

Fofana shouldn't be starting ahead of Acheampong based on what we've seen so far, while Colwill needs time to properly recover and regain his best level after that lengthy injury layoff last season. We all know what Colwill can offer when he's in top form, so there is no need to rush him back into being an automatic starter.

For me, Hato should be starting ahead of Colwill for now, while Acheampong deserves a consistent run in the team alongside Lacroix. Perhaps that combination can finally give us the defensive stability we've been searching for.

🗣️ Ancelotti: “I came to watch him, yes. After the World Cup there were many questions about Joao Pedro not being in the squad. As a coach you make decisions with the information you have at that moment. Then football gives the player an opportunity to answer you. Today he answered very well.

He scored, he created another goal and every time Chelsea went forward he looked dangerous. What I liked most was that he didn’t play like somebody trying to impress the Brazil coach sitting in the stands. He played his normal game. He moved between positions, linked the play, attacked the box. Everything came naturally.

Of course when you leave a player at home and then you come to watch him perform like this, you think about it. I would be lying if I said you don’t.

The important thing now is what happens next. Brazil has many good attacking players, but Joao is playing at a very high level. If he continues like this, the conversation will not be about whether he should be in the squad anymore. The conversation will be about where he plays.”
