What if your goal isn’t really about getting in shape?
I’ve spent 25 years around fitness and something has become increasingly obvious to me.
Most people say they want to lose weight, build muscle, get fitter or improve their health. And whilst those things matter, I don’t think they’re usually the real reason people start.
For many, the gym becomes a place where they are trying to find confidence, acceptance, self-worth or a sense of belonging. They’re trying to change how they feel about themselves.
The body becomes the focus because it’s visible. It’s something we can measure, control and work on. But underneath that, there is often something deeper driving the whole process.
Something a treadmill can’t fix.
Something a calorie deficit can’t solve.
I’ve watched thousands of people train and I’ve watched myself go through the same process. The more I observe, the more I believe that for most people it was never really about fitness at all.
Fitness was simply the doorway.
Maybe it’s time we stop looking at what we’re doing and spend more time asking why we’re doing it.
It’s time to readdress our why.
