Attention Staines Boat Club! Are you looking for training that complements and improves your rowing? Do you want to work on improving your core function so you can improve your speed AND reduce the risks of injury?
Core function is the ability of your core (that’s all the muscles in abs, back, shoulders) to create stiffness around your trunk whilst moving your arms and legs in different directions to generate and transfer force when you’re rowing, or indeed when you’re performing any movement.
Why is Pilates great for helping you to learn how to do this better? Because we incorporate complex movements that require stabilisation and balance of the of your whole core area, while moving arms and legs in a controlled fashion. These exercises mean that your muscle activity mimics the movement patterns we often see in rowing.
Then, when you get back on the water, you’ll find that the increase in core stability and improvement in your balance, leads to you being better able to use the power that your legs and arms generate to create more speed.
You’ll also find that because you’re better able to use the smaller stabilising muscles, you’ll have fewer injuries resulting from overworked big muscles or underworked strained small muscles.
If you’ve never tried Pilates, you might be thinking that it’s just for ladies, or it’s just lying about on a mat, or it’s boring.
Pilates is for every body – and Pilates is for rowers. Both Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell incorporate it into their training. It’s going to have you moving about in all the directions (yeah, OK, you will be on a mat…but it’s more than just lying there!); and you will need to focus and concentrate on what you’re doing, so there is no time to be bored.
We’re inviting you to join a FREE Strengthen your Spine Pilates Taster Class this Friday at 7-8am at the club to experience for yourself what Pilates can do for you.
