Brewood Chess Circle was represented by Harry Foster in the under 8 section in the 2024 Shropshire Junior Chess Championships.

Playing six games against other players in his age group from Shropshire and Staffordshire and beyond, Harry had a competitive tournament of chess, gaining two wins and more competitive experience. He ended up in 11th place, with an overall record of Played 6, Won 2, Drew 1, Lost 3 and he can be really proud of his sportsmanship as well as his tournament performance.

The event was run by Christopher Lewis, and Staffordshire's very own FM Jonathan Blackburn alongside Rudy Van Kemenade was providing live commentary on the games from the top board in each section, as they happened as the games took place on boards that relayed the moves.

There was also the opportunity for children to have a game of chess with a giant chess set, as well as the opportunity to show their puzzle solving skills. Alongside some home made refreshments such as home made cookie dough cakes, chocolate brownies and sausage rolls.

Overall a positive experience for Harry who really enjoyed the day.

Brewood would also like to congratulate Constantine Popov on winning the under 8 tournament with a 100% record of 6 wins from his 6 games.

Brewood Chess Circle was represented by Harry Foster in the under 8 section in the 2023 Staffordshire Junior Chess Championships. Harry was entering in his first ever rated chess tournament having joined Brewood Chess Circle a little over a year ago. Playing six games against other players in his age group from around the county and beyond, Harry performed really well considering this was all new to him. He ended up in 5th place, with more wins than losses (Played 6, Won 3, Drew 1, Lost 2) and he can be really proud of his achievements today.

Harry's only losses were against two of the top three in the tournament who finished joint 1st with five out of six wins. Although Harry lost in the 1st round, he was not to know at that stage, that he had already faced one of the three joint winners of the tournament, and bounced back with wins in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. His only draw of the day then followed, before he lost against another of the three joint winners in the 5th round. He managed to clinch 5th place in the last round with a final win.

Overall 138 players entered across the different age groups, a record turnout and proving just how popular the game of chess is at the moment. The event was run by FM Jonathan Blackburn, and Brewood would like to thank all the arbiters, and organisers as well as saying well done to everyone who took part and congratulating the winners.

But most of all well done to Harry.

The chess club are sad to report the news that Andrew Davies the club secretary has died. Andrew had been the club secretary since 1995, for 25 years.

David Blower the club chairman said: "On a personal note, I would like to thank him for all the help he has given me since I have been at the club, especially when I became the chairman of the chess club. He had given me lots of help especially regarding children at the chess club, the benefit of which the current children at the chess club are still receiving today."

Paul Wright, club committee member said: "Andrew was one of the nicest people that I have met, and he will be missed.

Despite it being difficult/impossible for him to attend the club over the past year or so, he was a very kind, hard-working and patient club secretary, as well as a good chess player. I never saw him lose his temper at anyone either. These qualities were why he was so good at his role, despite his health. He is a great role model for future club secretaries (and a great role model in general) in my eyes."

Details of the funeral will be communicated when known.

Checkmating with one rook and a king against a lone king is more difficult, but is also very important to learn when starting to play chess. Do you know how to do this? 😀
