Training Wednesday / Saturday Students of all levels are very welcome to come along and join us.

The UCL Sailing Club prides itself on being one of the most inclusive and varied sporting clubs in the university. UCL Sailing aims to provide an inexpensive way to give students the opportunity to begin sailing, or to continue sailing regularly while studying. We even have spare sailing kit for those want to come and give it a try! UCL Sailing is based at Welsh Harp Sailing Club, and sails on the Welsh Harp Reservoir NW9 8SA (near Brent Cross in NW London) which offers an ideal environment for sailing. It is only a 50 minute journey from UCL main campus. (Metropolitan to Wembley Park, 182/297 to Blackbird Hill). We have social/beginner sailing every Wednesday afternoon from 1.30 and team training on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00
+ Saturday mornings from 9.30-12.30. We currently have a very strong team which competes all around the country against different universities with some notable success. The team this year qualified for a place at the BUSA Finals after going through regional and national qualifiers! The club was also recently invited to compete in the coveted Wilson Trophy for the British Open Team Racing Championship

UCL Sailing is affiliated with Welsh Harp Sailing Club, with both clubs enjoying increasing membership since the merge. We have access to a brand new clubhouse complete with changing rooms, galley area and a bar! The club owns 13 Firefly dinghies as well as various support craft, which are used for beginner sailing and team training. We are extremely lucky to have such a well equipped fleet of boats making us one of the largest University Sailing Clubs in the UK. Our affiliation with WHSC also gives us access to one of the largest GP14 fleets in the country, with over 25-30 boats taking part in the weekly races. Formerly, UCL Sailing was the University of London Sailing Club, one of the oldest university sailing clubs with an extensive history. So we have one of the oldest and largest alumni groups in University sports. Castaways, founded in 1951, is a club for all ex-members of ULSC. For many years it has been one of the UK's leading team racing clubs and organises the Foot Trophy team racing event for Fireflies at the Welsh Harp every October. Introducing the 2026/27 Commodore!

Emilia joined UCLSC last year as a fresher, new to racing, and hung around so much that she has become our commodore! When not at the Harp, she can either be found somewhere on the Baltic or in an Oppie, occasionally in the Student Centre too. She hated sailing when she first started, fearing a carp would emerge from the murky waters of a Polish lake and knock her out of her Topaz Taz. But now, years later, she does pretty much nothing else and is ready to take the helm this year!

Meet your new Vice Commodore!

Hannah was practically born into a sailing cult in the lake district (big up Bassenthwaite šŸ˜Ž) and has been sailing since she was six. After attending a total of four training sessions but a lot of socials, sheā€™s managed to become vice commodore! When on the water she can quite often be found singing while sitting on a turtled boat having the time of her life (unless sheā€™s a crew and has to take sailing seriously!)

Introducing this year's Secretary!

Lila joined UCLSC as a fresher last year and has been sailing since she was ten. She trained at various clubs in England but was mainly based at Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre where she now works as a dinghy instructor. Lila has also coached youth sailing at a national level and is soon to become a powerboat instructor on the Thames! This year she'll be managing our admin as well as helping out with the smooth running of the club.

Meet this year's Treasurer! Ingrid started sailing Oppies and coaching grumpy preteens at Aberdeen Boat Club. She now sails at Filey SC, where she races (and unfortunately beach launches šŸ˜£) ILCAs. She joined UCLSC last year and quickly became a regular at socials and training, before eventually crewing for Purple at qualifiers in February. Sheā€™s putting her stats knowledge to good use and managing our club finances this year!

Say hello to your new Welfare Officer! To Sarah, sailing is the feeling she will always come back to. She joined UCLSC last year with 9 years of experience as a single-handed fleet racer, but still lots to learn about team racing. After a few training sessions and races, she grasped the basics quickly. This year, she looks forward to applying what she's learnt and navigating through team racing!

Introducing Antoine, this year's Race Captain!

It started by accident ā€” a summer camp at ten years old, a dinghy he never asked to sail, and a wind that decided for him. Eleven years later he still hasnā€™t found the off switch.

From there it went fast: competitive sailing on the international circuit, then yachting ā€” inshore, offshore, the long nights and the cold ones. Match racing. Team racing. Every discipline that turns a boat into an argument you have to win.

Now the summers are spent working charters, which is just another excuse to be on the water. And this season, as race captain, the goal is simple: build one of the best teams in the country. Same salt, same wind, same ten-year-old grinning at the helm.

Introducing your new Social Secretary! Imogen joined last year as a UoL student at the Courtauld Institute of Art ā€“ which, unsurprisingly, does not have a sailing team. Eager to get back on the water, she quickly sought out the UCL sailing team and we havenā€™t been able to get rid of her since! To make matters worse, she is officially joining UCL in September so we had to let her onto the committee. Imogen learnt to sail at Draycote Water Sailing Club in Warwickshire and now instructs there during the summer. She learnt to team race at school and, in her own words, has ā€œbeen sailing Fireflies for too longā€. Stay tuned for all the fun socials she's planning for the year šŸ¤©

Anson joins this yearā€™s committee as our bosun, keeping all our boats in shipshape with his physics expertise! Anson started sailing when he was 14 and mainly sailed Lasers in Hong Kong before joining us four years ago. Heā€™s sometimes at the sailing club, always pulling late nights at Senate House ā€“ those rockets don't fix themselves!
