HFC take silver!

On Saturday 13th June the Cambridgeshire Fencing Association 4 weapon competition was held at St Neots. This was its first year back after a couple of years break, so we were thrilled to see people return for this friendly team competition.

This is a fun event, each team consisting of a female foilist, a male foilist, an epeeist and a sabreur. Teams fence up to 40 points in a relay. The order in which team members fence is drawn at the start of each round and this order can make a surprising difference to the likely outcome.

We had 3 teams from Cambridge Fencing Club, 2 from Huntingdonshire Fencing Club and 1 from Northampton. Everyone enjoyed a full day’s fencing as a poule unique was followed by a DE where everyone fences for every place.

The HFC 1 team of Jacques Portal (MF), Tracey Coates (WF), George Partridge (E) and Dan Tozer (S) fenced well, using good team tactics to make it to the final. This match had some exciting fencing and was fairly close initially, but CFC pulled away at the end so HFC1 took the silver medal.

Northampton won their DE to finish in 3rd place. The HFC 2 team of Ian Coates (S), Josh (MF) Coates, Paul Grist (E) finished in a creditable 5th place as they were one team member short.

The Cambridgeshire Fencing Association, County Captain’s 4 Weapon Invitational Team Competition is back and would like more teams to join us.

The competition is in St Neots One Leisure on Sat 13th of June. We have space left and would love you to enter. Time is short so you will need to move quickly. Entry closes Friday 12th June but please let us know as soon as possible.

Check in: 08.30 – 8.45 a.m.
Start Time: 9.15 a.m.
Finish by: 16.00 p.m.

If your club can’t manage a whole team let us know and we can try and pair you up with another partial team.

This has been very popular in the past and a format that people have enjoyed. Nobody goes out in the ‘DE’ as you fence for every place so we keep you fencing for as long as possible.

Host: Grace Batey (BF Performance Athlete Support Coordinator)

Join us for a thought-provoking and empowering Q&A with Paralympian Gemma Collis, as we discuss navigating sport as a female athlete and how this intersects with having a disability. Gemma balances life as an athlete and life as a BBC Assistant Producer, so we will be delving into the hows of balancing two great careers.

Learning Objectives:
• Increase understanding and awareness of life as a female athlete.
• Increase awareness of the importance of the athlete voice and lived experiences.
• Directions for the future – how can fencing become more inclusive to female and disabled athletes?

Entry fee support scheme: 2025 Cadet & Junior Nationals, DEU Epee and U14 A BRC (Epee and Sabre)

BF is mindful of the rising costs of attending fencing events and the potential barrier to participation this creates for some members of our community. As a result, BF is offering a limited number of free entries. These will be offered based on financial need, not on ability. This scheme will cover 100% of the entry fee cost.
