University of St Andrews Men's Shinty Club

University of St Andrews Men's Shinty Club Representing the University of St Andrews, the historic Mens' Shinty Team competes in the University league and cup competitions. A romantic highland pastime?

Shinty: a sport emerging from the primordial mists of Scottish history. Or violent battle training drawn from bitter clan feudalism? The Gaelic forefather to many modern sports such as hockey, ice hockey and golf, Shinty remains one of the leading causes of character-building in the northern hemisphere. The St Andrews Men’s Shinty team has grown from a quaint diversion into a successful team, participating in Scottish Student Sport’s University Shinty League against universities all over Scotland. The team prides itself equally on its off-pitch activity, with a strong social culture based on our noble history and tradition. Most new players have never heard of the sport before arriving, and the club welcomes all willing participants, so bring your enthusiasm, get your shinpads on and get involved. Training Times:

I’ll admit, there’s something quite poetic about how my predecessor ended his captaincy with a historic, not terrible defeat to Edinburgh roughly a year ago (7:0), and here I am coming to the end of my captaincy with a pretty terrible defeat to the same team.

It was a classic StA shinty experience. Many of us were hungover. Raahb was in bed despite saying he’d play. A social member was drafted to ensure we had a full team. No ref had been arranged so H. Pugglz stepped up (he didn’t know the rules). We possibly played the 2nd half with 13 players. We conceded goals well into double digits. All fairly standard. What wasn’t standard however was that we scored some goals. One might have been illegal (it was) but the other was a fairly decent goal. The usual suspects played well, we know who they are (Gjalf etc). And if nothing else, Lindsay tried.

With only a couple games left of the season, "inshallah" we are able to field teams so we don't have to find out if the AU is bluffing about withdrawing us from the league and not reentering us next season. This would however require that the Rothschilds and CIA stop paying the Hamii to be "Busy".

Final score: 19(or 20?):2

COTW: Atcwymp
DOTD: Lindsay (Major chun)

Despite funding delays and issues with rejection by all high impact factor journals I am happy to announce that our paper, based on the results from the 6s tournament several weeks ago, has now been published in the Journal of Applied Shinty Boys. Please see the attached manuscript (Facebook is terrible and won't let me attach pdf directly so see link).

MOTM: Miguel Ganderoi (Patrick Connor)
COTW: Chilliwinkkl (Husain Makda)
DOTD: Raahbudeer (Thomas Mitchell)

Captain. Quartermaster. Thunderdome Champion. To this this day, only one shinty boy can claim they have achieved all of this, and this only scratches the surface of what Scarlett (Ole Jorgensen) has accomplished throughout his time in Shinty.

Singlehandedly fighting the lonely battle to buy stripes over quarters (sadly losing and gereing for it), Scarlett and his crib sheet dominated shinty’s poker leagues, and in among us he was the most sus shinty player after Trev. He has brought much laughter to the club and, defying many of his naysayers, he won Thunderdome - whilst proudly sporting his stripes - despite having the worst Controlled Assessment time.

His skills on and off the pitch are unparalleled in aggression and trolling, bringing covid split or steal to the single social he led and abusing players even after he retired: “if you want to have fun, f**k off elsewhere cause it isn’t here chief.”

He will be deeply missed as he has been a genuinely great friend and captain of the club leading us for two years during covid. He is moving on to greener pastures completing an MA at Imperial London and will forever be an iconic member of the club.
