At just 21 years old, Willie Auchterlonie became one of the youngest champions in the history of The Open, claiming a dramatic two-stroke victory at Prestwick.
His triumph was far from straightforward. After taking the lead midway through the championship, Willie was tested by the pressure of the final day. He made a difficult start to both his third and final rounds — including a six at the opening hole — but showed remarkable resilience to recover when it mattered most.
A final-round 82 gave him a four-round total of 322, setting a target for the chasing field. Amateur Johnny Laidlay came closest, finishing just two strokes behind on 324, while Sandy Herd was only three back.
Auchterlonie’s reward? The Championship Medal and a first prize of £30 — but more importantly, his place in golfing history. 🏆
His winning scores of 78-81-81-82 delivered his only Open Championship victory and ensured that, more than 130 years later, his name remains part of the story of golf’s oldest major.
