Spirited Spaxton 2 lose out to Brompton Ralph.

Spaxton 2s returned to HQ following a missed week last week and a couple of difficult away games in what was their penultimate game of this years’ season. With injury and a forced retirement to captain Passmore, vice captain P. Ching stepped back in to take the armband for the last couple of games of the season and Passmore taking a more managerial role. The Ron Atkinson (Faux) fur lined coat on stand by.

With rain throughout the last week, the ground was looking green and lush or the first time in a while. Due to this however, it did mean that Ching was confused as to what to do at the toss, but then again there's no change there. So, was happy when he lost the toss and Brompton put the 2s into bat.

P.Ching (9) and Hendy (48) walked out to open, trying to rekindle the 215 partnership from the last time they batted together and in the first couple of overs looked set to do the same with some l***y blows being seen. This was not to last unfortunately with the captain toe ending a ball straight up for the fielder, clearly showing that form is temporary.

Hendy however continued to impress and was joined by Clarke (6) who defended well before being caught out. Next to bat was Crockett (6) playing in his last game before retirement, and it was clear he wanted to end on a high. Hitting a vintage cut shot, with the ball going in the opposite direction, behind square leg for 4, only he will ever know how he got the ball there. It was not to be the fairytale end however after he missed a straight one, got out, had a little sulk and then retirement was over. We will see you next year!

Next wicket to fall was Hendy following a ‘bat splitting’ 48 which Millechamp and Hall will be receiving a call this week and this was the start of a collapse for the home team with S.Hughes (6) who was playing with a junior bat, N.Hughes (0), Jones (0) and Clist (0) all fell in quick succession but all gaining valuable experience in the middle.

The Spaxton innings was now in need of rescue, this gave opportunity for Brown (15) to come in and salvage the innings. With some attacking shots, he got the score ticking and passed 100 before being well bowled. Bringing the innings to a close was the watchful Seymour (2no) and Rich (5) who was well triggered in front of the stumps.

This gave Brompton 102 to chase and they started off well fending off the attack of both Brown (1-14) and Rich (0-26) who bowled a tight line. Each batter was made to work for their runs with Spaxton fielding showing vast improvements on previous weeks and this pressure was rewarded when Brown picked up the first wicket.

First change bought on Jones (0-18) who was deployed to bowl a floaty spin into the sun, this worked brilliantly and was so unlucky not to be rewarded with a wicket. It was however at the other end where N.Hughes (2-28) was brought into the attack in his first ever senior game. He bowled beautifully to pick up not just his first but also his second wicket all in one over. With dad S.Hughes watching on with pride, he got caught up in the moment and unfortunately dropped a simple catch and denied his son a 3 for on his debut. I wouldn't have wanted to be a fly on that wall in the evening!

With the score edging closer it, a cameo bowling was then seen from Seymour (0-8) and Ching (0-8) who sacrificed himself in the last over against a batter who was swinging so much from the hip, that the other games in the league had to be cancelled due to adverse winds.

Ultimately Brompton got the runs and the 2s were unsuccessful, however sometimes the result isn't the main story and this game was an example of that, instead Spaxton players left the field in a more positive way and with laughter being heard which is what it is about!

Special mention to all the entire 2s squad and families that all turned out on Saturday whether they were playing or not, ensuring that it is not a team game at Spaxton, instead it is a community.

With the season drawing to a close next week, the 2s welcome Stogumber to HQ, so if you are interested in joining or want to come and have a watch, there will be a BBQ and a b**r fridge that needs emptying, all are welcome.

Yesterday saw the last session of 2026 for our All Stars, Dynamos and girls squad. The picture is only a fraction of our total group.
It ended with our presentation night of certificates, medals and sweets.
We loved seeing every single child walk, run, ride and skip across the field to play cricket. They all progressed more than we could have imagined.

*Spaxton 1’s Safe with a Game to Spare.*

Spaxton first team knew going into their penultimate fixture of the season that a strong win would in all probability secure their position in the division for next season. In a somewhat brutal division that sees two teams promoted and four teams relegated from the ten team league, Wincanton were the visitors to the scorched Spaxton playing fields in an almost winner takes all showdown.

With a strong 11 on paper, Spaxton captain T Hill strode to the middle with the opposition captain, as the occasion started to build. As it turned out the anticipated capacity crowd would have to take to their seats pretty quickly.

With the toss lost by the home team captain, the visitors decided to have a bat first and away team openers Hurlock and Mitchell made their way to the middle. A couple of wayward deliveries from Spaxton opener Richards in his first over were dispatched ruthlessly by Mitchell, who looked in the mood to take the initiative to the Spaxton bowlers. With the score on 17 in the 5th over, having found his range, Richards removed opener Hurlock caught behind by keeper Clarke. The score had moved on to 27 when the dangerous looking Mitchell was removed off the bowling of J Hill, caught by Epps at Cover, who somehow managed to make a regulation catch look incredibly difficult.

When the third wicket fell in the 12th over with the score on 42, there was a slight feel of inevitability around the ground as to what was about to happen. Spaxtons first change bowlers T Hill and L Kitch had hit their straps and with a bit of help from the pitch, which for once was not offering a lot to the batsmen, Spaxton rattled through the Wincanton batting line up in double quick fashion. The visitors all out for 67 from just 24 overs. Captain Hill finishing with 3 for 15 and pick of the bowlers Kitch 5 for 11, including 2 broken bails!

The decision was made by the two captains to take early tea, prepared as always by the fantastic Spaxton Tea Ladies, and enjoyed by players and spectators alike. Spaxton openers Kitch and J Hill made their way to the middle in search of the 68 runs required for both victory and guaranteed league safety.

Despite knowing the wicket was playing up a bit and the significance a win would have, the Spaxton opening pair showed no nerves as they steadily went about the task in hand. Despite Kitch falling for 13 in the 5th over, the brothers Hill brought Spaxton home in the 14th over for the loss of just the one wicket. A crushing victory in the context of both the fixture itself and the ultimate league standings. A maximum points victory meaning mathematical safety for Spaxton 1st team.

Credit to the Wincanton players, who to a man, despite the rather chastening defeat stayed behind afterwards, as Spaxtons celebrations started. With the opposition departed, drinks flowing freely, music playing and the club BBQ in full swing, a celebratory evening was had by all that stayed on. For a number of the players and some of the spectators, celebrations moved from the Cricket ground to the bright lights of Bridgwater, and we can only presume that some pretty sore heads followed on Sunday morning.

Spaxton 1st team travel away to Kilmington & Stourton for their final league fixture next Saturday, the last leg of their 2026 Somerset tour, which has seen them travel almost 300 miles across their nine away fixtures. With captain Hill otherwise engaged Elk riding in the Canadian Rockies, reminding himself that the season finishes at the end of August, and not half way through it, VC Andison will swap the golf shoes for the Cricket spikes, and guide the boys and the fun bus on one last outing this season.

Huge game at the playing fields today as the 1st XI host North Perrot in much need of a win. Currently sat in 7th place in Division 4 with 4 sides going down all to play for in the final 4 games.

The stars have aligned, the wind is blowing the right way, social activities and commitment issues have all subsided and it’s a HOME game to welcome the Galacticos into a strong looking side this week for Captain Hill to lead into the slightly scorched trenches.

More importantly today’s game will be played in memory of Andrew ‘Tomo’ Thomas as we once again thank Gilly Thomas and the family for their continued love and support of the club which ‘Tomo’ gave so much too over the years. Tomo is hugely missed around the club and today’s game will be played in celebration of his birthday that was earlier this week.

Spaxton 2s Winning Streak Ended by Stoke st Mary.

Saturday saw the Spaxton 2s return to a much changed team following a well earned week off. Dropping out was Crocket who was away mastering a finger clicking course, along with a few other absences in what was a challenging week for selection. With captain Passmore promoted to the 1s, the VCs of P.Ching and R.Brown standing in.

With a once again well prepared strip, this was ruined by Ching who attempted to paint the lines which ended up being so thick that they were wider than the Great Wall of China and could be seen from Mars.

With weather conditions being so favourable for batting it meant that the toss would be vital for the outcome of the game. So Ching was delighted when the coin fell the right way, only for the words of ‘We’ll have a bowl’ was muttered and the Stoke captain duly accepted as he skipped back to the pavilion.

Stoke went out to the middle and wanted to capitalise on the favourable conditions however they were quickly down 2 wickets following poor shots but good bowling from C.Ching (2-67). She was backed up well by R.Brown (0-47) who was unlucky to pick up any wickets.

The next 2 batters of Bouchta (71) and Sproston (154) came in and formed what would be a match winning partnership of 160 which included attacking batting and favourable fielding saw the runs pile up in quick fashion. Bowlers of Peel (0-25) , L.Brown (0-19), Seymour (0-29) all toiled in the difficult conditions and were unlucky not to pick up a wicket.

Following some flighted deliveries incoming Jones (3-32) dusted off the cobwebs from the last couple of weeks and was able to break the partnership and allowed a flurry of other wickets. He was supported with Pike (1-32) and P.Ching (2-43) who both picked up wickets . The innings was brought to a close with a final couple of overs from Carr (0-24) but difficult conditions gave Stoke a huge 326 for Spaxton to reel in. Special mention to 12 man Hughes who supported with the fielding throughout.

After a short break Spaxton began their reply with in form Gunstone (143) following his 150 from the previous game came out in the same fashion with aggressive hitting. He was initially joined by Carr (1) however this was short lived following an early catch.

Gunstone was then joined by the other inform batter of P.Ching (47) and together they began building a partnership in quick fashion. With the both batter comfortably going at over a run, the partnership quickly turned over 100 and with fielders heads dropping it looked like Spaxton were on course for a big score. Stoke were in real need of some luck and they got it, with applause turning to surprise when Ching hit a four to take him to past 50 but in the follow through managed to step onto his wicket.

This was in front of 5 Spaxton Ladies who had talked about this very thing in training the night before by Ching himself. Leaving the saying ‘those who can't do teach’ ringing true.

This enabled Stoke to get a foothold in the game with wickets of Clist (0) and Peel (5) falling shortly after. This brought Jones (24) to the middle who was able to support Gunstone past another 100. The two put on a fight but hopes were dashed when another slice of luck saw Gunstone chop a ball onto his stumps for a brilliant 143.

Again this gave Stoke the momentum in the game again and they took it with both hands by taking the rest of the wickets R.Brown (0), Seymour (4) C.Ching (2) followed by Jones who battled hard with the tail for his 24 and finally L. Brown (1). This left Spaxton short by 82 runs and all out on 244 of just 28 overs.

Overall it was a tricky game, with challenging conditions but the youthful Spaxton team kept going throughout. Without a couple of small margins going the other way with the bat and a bit more luck in the field could have seen the game go the other way. Congratulations to Stoke St. Mary in winning what was a really competitive game, we will look forward to locking horns again soon.

Record partnership sees Spaxton 2s home in the heat.

Spaxton 2s welcomed East Huntspill to the playing fields in their first home game since April. With last week's MVP Clarke moving up to the 1s, this gave opportunity for Hendy to make his Spaxton debut and was joined by the returning Gunstone and morale officer Carr.

Following last week’s successful toss, captain Passmore was feeling confident when he walked out and wasn’t to be disappointed. Passmore won and jumped at the opportunity to put the home team in.

Spaxton opened up with the usual P.Ching (93no) and like Henry VIII wives he was joined by his 6th partner in just 7 games. Hoping to be the one that survives was Crockett (19) who had seen flashes of form return in difficult conditions in the previous week.

In what were perfect batting conditions, Crockett was keen to give East Huntspill a chance by spooning up a delivery on the first ball of the innings but luckily it fell into open space.

This kicked Cockett into gear and he began to get the score ticking over at pace. Unfortunately this was not to last with him edging behind for the first wicket to fall. Coming in at 3 was debutant Hendy (100no) and with Ching only facing 4 balls at this point it meant that there were essentially two new batters in the middle.

Whilst this was only Hendy’s second game in 5 years, immediately there were some classy shots being shown. Quickly he found his feet and got the score moving forward.

With the hot weather combined with a lightning fast outfield, the score moved forward at a decent pace. Both batters were cashing in and saw their 50’s and the 100 partnership too. Ching’s ‘test match’ nickname at this point was under threat. Then in the 20th over, due to the searing weather there was a decision to change the match, moving it from a 40 over game to just 30 overs. This was due to the welfare of players and the correct decision made.

However with the game changing and there being now just 10 overs left, the score was on just 123/1. Both batters decided to go on the attack. In the following 10 overs both Ching batters put on an impressive 119 runs, and saw Hendy pass his 100, both of them ending the innings not out and a record partnership of 213 runs.

Unfortunately with the shortened overs it did mean however that Ching was just 7 runs short of a maiden hundred, something that captain Passmore will now be reminded of for quite some time. Spaxton had managed to post a strong score of 242 at the turn.

Spaxton went out to field and opened the bowling with the usual Passmore and C.Ching combination. The home team were celebrating straight away when Passmore (1-20) picked up the first wicket on the first ball of the innings. This was quickly followed by a second wicket without troubling the scorers when C.Ching (1-24) decided to bowl a beaming gr***de which the batter could only pop up to the infield. After a surprising fair delivery given by the umpire the batter walked.

East Huntspill was now in need of a partnership and they were duly rewarded when Milot and Patel came to the middle and began to build their innings. Even with tight bowling from R.Brown (1-29) both batters passed their 50s and nerves were beginning to show in the home ranks.

This was especially so when L.Brown (0-16) and Seymour (0-18) were brought into the attack and were unfortunately on the receiving end of some aggressive batting.

Spaxton were desperately in need of a wicket and it came when P. Ching (2-33) bowled a terrible half tracker that the batter missed and struck off stump. This breakthrough was exactly what the 2s needed and with confidence now high, wickets began to tumble. Firstly with R.Brown picking up a deserved wicket along with a second for P.Ching with the ball before taking a run out following some smart fielding by Crockett.

This set up nicely for 12 year old Peel (3-0) to come into the attack. It took him just 5 balls for no runs to mop up the final 3 East Huntspill tail and secure a long overdue victory for the 2s.

Special mention to Monty Clist who was 12th player and through the game fielded for both teams and East Huntspill for yet another well played match, we are already looking forward to locking horns again later in the season.

Much changed and youthful Spaxton 2s fall to 4th defeat in a row

This week the Spaxton 2s travelled to Devon to play Morebath in the West Somerset league for their fifth away game in a row. Following a challenging week in selection, it saw captain Passmore make 3 changes to the previous week’s 11. This included 4 players of just 12 years old, with 2 of those Peel and Clist playing their first ever senior game.

With Passmore feeling the effects of the jet lag in going over the border from Somerset, he won the toss and decided to field.

First to open the bowling was both Passmore (1-32) and C.Ching (0-42) and like the previous week bowled well and were unlucky to not to collect the first wicket. They were followed by L.Brown (0-48) and R.Brown (2-34) who continued to toil without much luck.

The opening partnership was broken in the 20th over by an R.Brown baseball style moon ball that was not picked by the batter. This breakthrough was needed as the opening pairing had racked up 123 runs and half centuries each. The old saying of one brings two was then demonstrated with the other opening batter being dismissed only 2 overs later.

Due to the opening pairing putting on such a strong partnership it meant that subsequent batters were then given freedom when they came in and they didn’t miss out on the opportunity with aggressive shots being hit from the moment they came in.

Peel (1-29) was the next bowler to be introduced and with difficult conditions was able to trap the next batter LBW for his first adult wicket. At the other end he was joined by the in (now out of) form P.Ching (0-26), as he was on the wrong end of some brutal hitting of which one of the balls he was lucky to get out of the way of as it would have caused a serious head injury.

Finally the MVP for the day Clarke, who had been keeping quite brilliantly already decided to change the pads for the ball and proceeded to show the rest of the team how it was done by getting the next 3 wickets for just 35 runs. He was ably supported by Seymore (1-35) and returning Passmore who picked up a wicket and at the turn Morebath had hit an huge total of 302/8

Clarke (18)then quickly got his batting pads on and joined the in (and again now out of) form P.Ching (8). Following last week's heroics Ching started well but then was well run out by some quite brilliant fielding with a direct hit. All Ching could do was rekindle his footballing days and slide tackle the bowler as the bails flew off.

Clarke was then joined by Crockett (22) and with some unorthodox shots, many one handed found the boundary with ease before popping one up to the infield.

Clarke was going about his business at the other end with some lovely stroke play and defensive game however there was no one at the other end staying with him. Wickets of Peel (1), Seymour (3) and Clist (1) all going in quick succession.

When Clarke fell and then shortly after saw R.Brown (5) this left Spaxton on 71/6 with a mountain to climb. So cometh the hour cometh the man, captain Passmore (23) entered the field and decided to swing from the hip with a couple of huge 6’s saw Spaxton earn their batting point before again popping one up to a fielder to take.

Unfortunately the rest of the innings didn’t see much more runs added with C.Ching (2), Steward (0) leaving young L.Brown (0no) in the middle on his own and SPaxton all out for 103.

Whilst this was another loss from the 2’s special mention has to go to the young players who played well above their age and in particular to Clarke who picked up the player of the match award.

🏏 Hill Brothers Guide Spaxton 1’s to Victory. 🏏

Under clear blue skies, Spaxton 1’s hosted Kilmington at the resplendent Playing Fields on Saturday. With the temperature thankfully cooling slightly from the recent blistering highs, the wicket looked like a good one for batting, and so it proved.
With three changes from the previous weeks’ exploits at Wincanton, out went Williams, Rich Snr and Rich Jnr, and in came Brown, Carr and Venton. Toss lost, Spaxton were asked to field, and after a huddle and pep talk from captain T Hill and the rejuvenated Bishop, the team set about the task of what looked from the outset like it could be a day for containment rather than one for cart wheeling stumps. Spaxton opener A Richards had other ideas however with a tidy spell from the bungalow end, bowling 7 overs straight and returning figures of 2 for 44. Picking up both Kilmington openers via a couple of neat caught behinds by keeper T Clarke.
Richards was ably supported at the other end by J Hill (0-34), who bowled well with little reward. The two early wickets brought together O Horner (103) and A Ross (59), who set about the Spaxton attack, putting on a third wicket partnership of 117. At drinks Kilmington had somewhat rode their luck, with a number of frustrating half chances falling their way, but in continuing to attack, they had laid a good platform, moving on to, 121-2.
Fortunately for Spaxton the drinks break did bring the wicket they were looking for, captain Hill dismissing the dangerous Ross with J Hill pouching the tricky skied chance over his shoulder. Spaxtons joy was short lived however as J Clare (60) joined Horner and together they put on a rapid 111 partnership in just 11 overs. With the Spaxton bowlers toiling in the mid-afternoon sun and looking bereft of ideas, captain Hill continued to rotate his bowlers, and encourage his troops, trying to find the vital breakthrough.
At 30 overs Kilmington had reached 184 for 3 and Spaxton were staring down the barrel of a huge score. After 3 more brutal overs, which yielded a further 46 runs, Spaxton were rewarded for their persistence. Bishop (3-57), coming back on at the football ground end, finally found the line and length that had deserted him in his first spell, and in quick succession removed the dangerous Clare, and claimed 2 further Kilmington scalps. The final 7 overs yielded just 42 runs.
At the turn, Spaxton were somewhat relieved, having at the 30 over stage feared a lot worse than the 273 target set. Albeit a mammoth task ahead of them, with a track looking like a batter’s dream, there was optimism in the Spaxton camp. Following teas as ever, perfectly prepared by Kim and Gilly, Spaxtons openers Gunstone and J Hill strode to the crease full of belief and moist sponge.
Spaxton knew a quick start was critical, and both Gunstone and J Hill flew out of the blocks. After some l***y blows, Gunstone fell for a quick-fire 20 with the score at 29 inside 4 overs. This attacking opening stand set the tone for what was about to come as Captain Hill joined brother John in the middle and between them, they set about systematically destroying the Kilmington attack. The ball flying to all parts.
By the time pick of the bowlers Roffe cleaned up Captain Hill for a brutal run a ball 86 in the 31st over, the score had raced to 230 and Spaxton were on the brink of what looked at the halfway point, an unlikely victory. Bishop joined J Hill at the crease and the batting momentum continued, with Bishop ably supporting the well-set Hill. The two batsmen brought the victory home with just under 5 overs to spare with Hill finishing on 118 not out off just 97 balls and Bishop on 23 not out.
A big thanks to Kilmington for playing their part in the high scoring contest. 540 odd runs in the afternoon. A game played in good spirits throughout. We look forward to the return fixture later in the season. On Saturday the 2’s are back in action away at the picturesque Morebath, with the 1’s hosting fellow mid tablers Crewkerne at the playing fields.
