Despite being the child feeding invisible ants during maths lessons, I somehow ended up becoming a Personal Trainer, completing a sports science degree, a master’s in strength and conditioning, and later becoming a qualified teacher.

Honestly, if the nuns from my old primary school could see me now, I think a few of them would need a lie down.

But my messy journey taught me something important: people change when they find meaning.

Most people considering a career in fitness are not chasing fame or Instagram followers. They are searching for work that feels aligned with who they are. Work that helps people. Work that feels meaningful instead of draining.

And if you’re doubting yourself right now, remember this:
you do not need to be perfect to start. I certainly wasn’t.

Fitness was the first thing in my life that made my brain feel switched on instead of switched off.

Not because I suddenly became obsessed with six packs or protein shakes.

Because for the first time, I found something that gave me:

✔ Purpose
✔ Direction
I became fascinated by the human body, training, health, performance, and the connection between physical and mental well-being.

That’s why I always say fitness changes far more than bodies.

It changes identity.
It changes belief.
It changes how you see yourself.

For me, fitness stopped being “just exercise” a long time ago. It became a passion, a career, and honestly, a huge part of who I am.

One thing I’ve noticed after years of teaching aspiring Personal Trainers…

A lot of the people who doubt themselves the most are often the people best suited to coaching others.

They battle imposter syndrome.
They overthink everything.
They compare themselves constantly.
They worry they are not good enough.

But underneath all of that, they are usually deeply empathetic human beings who genuinely care about helping people.

And resilience? They already have it.

Because getting up every day while fighting that internal dialogue takes strength most people never see.

Sometimes the people who have struggled the most become the coaches who make others feel the safest, most understood, and most supported.

A lot of people assume fitness professionals have always been confident, disciplined, and “together.”

Reality check… some of us spent primary school crawling around classrooms looking for invisible ants called Charlie.

I was the kid who struggled to sit still, got bored easily, talked too much, and constantly felt like I was the problem. Years later, I realised a lot of it was ADHD.

What changed my life was finding something that switched my brain on instead of shutting it down. For me, that was fitness.

That’s why I genuinely believe some of the best coaches are not the people who were naturally perfect at life. They are the people who struggled, learned, adapted, and now want to help others do the same.

Your past doesn’t disqualify you from becoming a great coach. Sometimes it is exactly what makes you relatable.

Also… Charlie was never found.

“Stay where it’s safe.”

That voice keeps a lot of people stuck.

Stuck in jobs they hate.
Stuck doubting themselves.
Stuck believing they are not capable of more.

I know that feeling well because I used to be that person.

I wasn’t the kid teachers pointed at and said, “he’ll go far.”

To be honest, I was usually the reason the teacher considered early retirement.

But fitness changed the direction of my life.

Not overnight.
Not perfectly.
Not without setbacks.

But step by step, it gave me confidence, structure, purpose, and eventually a career I genuinely love.
