The biggest mistake that Hybrid Athletes make is something that I actually see all the time.

Every month I’ll speak to a handful of people that apply for my coaching, and this, by far, is the main issue.

Developing qualities in strength & endurance concurrently, takes a dedicated approach.

If you want to become a long term Hybrid Athlete, then you might need to stop hopping from one type of training to another just so you can hang another medal on the wall.

A rare traverse of North West Svalbard 🐻‍❄️

For 20 days, Amelia and the team skied and dragged their pulks across the ice and snow of Svalbard, on this fully self supported research trip.

Amelia also had all her camera equipment, because she was filming a documentary about the whole experience along the way!

I had the pleasure of getting Amelia ready for this physical endeavour, which was not your normal training programme as we had a completely non running approach to this.

Strength and a high level of physical robustness is an absolute must for these long, multi day style events. Even more so in extreme conditions. For this reason it can be too easy to fall into the trap of getting too specific too early - the work that Amelia needed to do was to get stronger - which we did with lots of box squats, single leg work, as well as a good amount of plyometrics.

For her energy systems work, I still wanted a complete spectrum of all tiers, but this was complicated by some lingering knee issues which meant we took a non running approach. This meant using work arounds like assault bike intervals for her shorter, harder sessions, uphill weighted treadmill hiking for some sub and near threshold interval sessions, and longer, extended weekend hikes, often immediately following a series of tyre drag intervals. This was all complimented with easier sessions on the elliptical and bike.
